Windows 7 Ultimate cracked and activated with OEM master key

Windows 7 has yet to even be released officially to the general public, and already the dodgy folk on the Internet have fully cracked and activated the Ultimate version, with help from a leaked Lenovo OEM DVD .ISO file. The news comes from website My Digital Life who state that you can already pass Windows Genuine Advantage validation offline, OEM style. The leaked .ISO was originally posted on a Chinese forum, which was then downloaded in order for people to get hold of the boot.wim, and in turn retrieving the OEM-SLP key, plus the OEM activation certificate. Microsoft uses the same digitally signed OEM certificate, which has an .xrm-ms extension, as that in Windows Vista.

XP OEM Licensing Extension Is Urban Myth

Contrary to all the blog buzz, Microsoft hasn't extended OEM Windows XP "downgrade" licensing by another six months. What Microsoft has done is agree to provide OEMs with Windows XP media until June 30. Surely, somebody will accuse me of playing semantics. Not so. It's called accuracy in reporting, and pretty much everybody has it wrong.

The blogosphere buzzed with excitement, ridicule and accusation over the weekend about the rumored extension. Seems like anybody and everybody wagged the "We told you that Vista sucks" finger at Microsoft. I don't doubt that several OEMs want to continue offering Windows XP after Jan. 31, but they didn't need any extension to do it.

Dell to Sell Windows XP Professional with PCs Through 2009

In a letter to some of Dells customers, they said that " XP Professional is available for OEM installation on your Dell PC purchases through at least 2009 and likely longer." The "official" OEM and retail end date from Microsoft is June 30, 2008, just a few weeks away. There has been much talk of whether Microsoft would bow to the demand of the consumers to keep XP alive, and with this it is still hard to tell if Dell bought a years stock of licenses ahead of time, or if this is the precursor to an announcement from Microsoft.

Dell's plan for users is to have Windows XP Professional installed on their machines, but include the Vista install disk for when they are ready to upgrade. "With XP installed, we will send media for both Vista and XP with each PC so that when you are ready to migrate to Vista you may at no addition upgrade cost." The demand seems high, so let's hope others follow suit to allow companies the time and resources to fully upgrade.

Microsoft Responds to Save XP Petition

Microsoft's decision to discontinue OEM and packaged sales of Windows XP at the end of June - leaving businesses and consumers with the less-than-celebrated Vista as their only choice of Windows operating system on new PCs - has drawn considerable criticism and led to an outpouring of support for the continuation of XP sales.

Over 75,000 people have signed Infoworld's 'Save XP' petition; a Web site complete with an XP countdown timer, video tributes, and a series of articles detailing why a large number of businesses, organizations and consumers are unhappy with Microsoft's decision to force them into adopting the yet-to-be widely accepted Vista operating system.

<...> In response to Infoworld's petition and other pro-XP outpourings of support, a Microsoft spokesperson in the US told Computerworld: "We're aware of it, but are listening first and foremost to feedback we hear from partners and customers about what makes sense based on their needs. That's what informed our decision to extend the availability of XP initially, and what will continue to guide us."

Microsoft tweaks anti-piracy check for Windows XP

Microsoft has updated software that verifies whether a copy of Windows is genuine in its Windows XP Professional edition, making it similar to the notification in Windows Vista and thus more persistently visible to users. In a blog posting attributed to Alex Kochis, a Microsoft director of product marketing and management, the company said it made the changes to the Windows Genuine Notification (WGA) alerts for XP Pro because it is "the product edition that is most often stolen."

Now when a version of Windows XP Pro is found to be pirated or counterfeit, the next time a user logs on to the system, the desktop screen background will be black, replacing whatever custom desktop may have been set by the user. This will reappear every 60 minutes, even if a user resets the screen's background. Previously, this was not a part of the WGA notification for Windows XP Pro.

How to get Windows XP after June 30

Two weeks ago, InfoWorld launched a petition campaign to save Windows XP. So far we’ve gotten more than 70,000 signatures, thanks to a passionate response from a wide range of XP users. We hope we can persuade Microsoft to keep selling XP licenses indefinitely, past the June 30 deadline, after which Microsoft
has said no more shrink-wrapped or OEM licenses will be available for retailers, computer makers, and others to order. (Vendors
can continue to sell by June 30 any XP licenses they ordered from Microsoft, but when they run out of those, they can't get
more to sell.)

We fully acknowledge that, even if we get a million signatures, Microsoft may stick with its original plan. If new Windows
XP licenses come to a screeching halt after June 30 as currently planned, what can IT do to get more XP seats? The answer
depends on your licensing arrangement with Microsoft. The short answer for most users, though, is that Microsoft will let
people with Vista Business or Ultimate "downgrade" to Windows XP Pro under specific circumstances.

Here, based on Microsoft's published documentation and on the company’s responses to our questions, is InfoWorld's guide to
how you can get new XP licenses after Microsoft officially pulls the plug.

Windows 7 OEM prices unveiled, 50% off list price

ComputerWorld is reporting that online retailer Newegg.com has unveiled Windows 7 OEM pricing. Newegg.com has priced the OEM version of Windows 7 Home Premium at $99.99 which is a price reduction of 50% down from the recommended retail price of $199.99. Other savings are available for Windows 7 Professional and Windows 7 Ultimate at $134.99 and $174.99, respectively. This is a saving of approximately 50% on each version from the list price. OEM editions are priced lower as you typically do not get retail packaging, little official support and you're not able to transfer the operating system license from one PC to another.

Windows XP gets another stay of execution

Microsoft has extended the final OEM and reseller delivery date for the Windows XP from January 31, 2009 to May 30, 2009. The cut off date for PC makers to obtain licenses for the software was January 31, 2009. Still, vendors have to place their orders before the official cutoff date of January 31, but they dont have to take delivery until May. Microsoft granted the reprieve largely because of customer's preference for XP. Microsoft also recently extended the Vista "downgrade" deadline for OEMs to July 31 and netbooks and low-cost laptops will be able to run XP until at least June 2010, so chances are you'll be able to get XP until Windows 7 ships.

Windows XP to be phased out by year's end

Computer makers have been told they'll no longer be able to get Windows XP OEM by the end of this year, despite consumer resistance to Vista and its compatibility problems.

By early 2008, Microsoft's contracts with computer makers will require companies to only sell Vista-loaded machines. "The OEM version of XP Professional goes next January," said Frank Luburic, senior ThinkPad product manager for Lenovo. "At that point, they'll have no choice."

Despite Microsoft's relentless promotion of Vista, manufacturers are still seeing plenty of demand from customers for systems preloaded with XP, especially in the finicky SOHO market.

How to Get Windows XP Even Though it's 'Dead'

On June 30, 2008, Microsoft pulled the plug on Windows XP. That's the last day Windows XP was officially available for purchase from retail outlets, major resellers and OEM hardware manufacturers. But that doesn't mean the operating system is going to go quietly. Many consumers would still rather run XP than Vista, and there are several loopholes in Microsoft's supply chain that let you get a copy of XP if you really want one.

Microsoft sends harsh reality check to OEMs

Last week, Microsoft sent certified letters to its OEM partners regarding Vista's anti-piracy technology -- or, more accurately, what happens if they dare ship a system with a "non-genuine" copy of Vista.

The answer: The system is crippled for 30 days, then hosed entirely until you pony up for a license. This is apparently what Microsoft means when it http://oem.microsoft.com/downl oads/public/US/wgavista/genuin e.pdf>warns of a "diminished user experience."

This would be fine if Microsoft were a reasonably competent organization and Windows Genuine Advantage worked flawlessly. True pirates deserve to be punished. But Microsoft isn't and WGA doesn't “ at least, judging by the many letters I got from Cringesters who bought legit OEM copies of XP from major manufacturers, only to have WGA label them as pirates. ..

XP Gets Yet Another Life

Escaping the grasp of death once again, Windows XP gets another 5 years of life! While they still plan to end mainstream support for Windows XP Pro on April 14, 2009, HP says that Microsoft is still giving OEMs the option to install XP on their machines for one more year, until April 30, 2010.

XP Extended Support (strictly security updates; nothing else) will; run all the way until April 8, 2014! They say that they hate extending dates time and time again, and strongly encourage customers to upgrade to Vista (at least) or Windows 7. But with all these extensions, maybe somewhere deep down in the heart of Redmond, there's a bit of nostalgia that just can't let go of good ol' Windows XP.
