12.10.2007XP Pro to receive WGA similar to Vista SP1
Remember how everyone was excited about how Vista SP1 received a WGA update to not block you from your computer?
Well, the same is coming
to Windows XP. (Professional only, though. Who would want to pirate XP Home?)
From the WGA Blog:
With this update to
WGA Notifications in Windows XP, we've implemented a couple of related features that draw on the notifications experience we designed for Windows
Vista SP1. After installing this version of WGA Notifications on a copy of Windows XP that fails the validation, most users will discover on their
next logon that their desktop has changed to a plain black background from whatever was there previously (see below).
The desktop
background can be reset to anything else in the usual ways, but every 60 minutes it will change back to the plain black background. This will continue
to happen until that copy of Windows is genuine.
Also, the user will see the addition of what we call the "persistent desktop
notification." This notification is similar to a watermark but works a bit differently. The image (see below) appears over the system tray and is
non-interactive in the sense that you can't click on it or do anything to it.
As with previous releases, if a copy of Windows fails
validation, notifications will appear above the system tray regularly - and we will continue to have the pre-logon message, the logon interrupt
message and the messages that appear from the system tray. jcxp.net -

28.08.2008Windowblinds comes to Vista
Version 5.5 of WindowBlinds
has been designed to enable
Windows Vista to become
skinnable. This is no easy
task for a number of reasons.
The biggest reason has to do
with the new Desktop Window
Manager (DWM). While
technically WindowBlinds could
have hacked its way to work on
Vista, it was important that
WindowBlinds work natively on
Vista and that means using the
new 3D composited desktop. By
using the DWM you get hardware
acceleration and a ton of
other possible effects.
The second challenge
was making visual styles
(skins) made for Windows XP
work on Windows Vista without
parts missing. So Stardock
developed "Smart Skinning"
in which graphical elements in
XP skins are translated to
take care of new parts in
Windows Vista.

26.02.2007Royale Noir: secret XP theme uncovered
Sometime after the launch of
XP, somewhere in Redmond,
someone on the Microsoft
design team was in the
progress of developing
something for Media Center. It
was believed to be too
powerful for public
consumption and forever
archived in the servers at 1
Microsoft
Way.
Devoted
Channel9 member W3bbo spotted
an interesting theme on one of
the people_ready television
commercials airing in the
States. After some dedicated
searching, he finally
uncovered this mystery XP
theme by Microsoft. W3bbo
writes,
"D
uring Royales development (the
XP Media Center theme), the
graphic artists also produced
a black version of the skin,
sans the overused glass
effect. The result is an
aesthetic black skin named
Royale Noir, it even works
with Office
2003.
Since the
skin was never released (or
reached final adjustments)
there are a few issues with
it: some of the colors dont
meet the overall feel (theyre
too purple-ish compared to the
greys of the bitmaps) and the
inactive titlebars are a
little too dark.

Critical remote IE exploit patch due Tuesday
Microsoft is planning to release two out-of-band security patches on July 28, 2009. Officials warned in an advanced security bulletin that the
Internet Explorer vulnerability is critical for Windows XP (IE 6/7/8) and Windows Vista (IE 7/8). It's not yet clear whether Windows 7 is
affected. The issue is marked as critical and as a Remote Code Execution. Microsoft also plans to plug a moderate hole in Visual Studio. Microsoft
Visual Studio .NET 2003, 2005 and 2008 are all affected and it's thought the Visual Studio patch will solve an issue that can affect certain types
of applications.

Microsoft: 5573 Does Not Imply a Specific XP SP3 Build
Marius Oiaga: Microsoft is not saying much at all about the third and final service pack for Windows XP, and whatever information does manage to get
through the translucent filters implemented by Steven Sinofsky, Senior Vice President, Windows and Windows Live Engineering Group,
presents little
relevance. A recent reference related to XP SP3 is Build 5573 from KB951126. Judging by the fact that XP SP 3 Release Candidate 2 Refresh 2 was Build
5508, speculation began circulating of a new version
number 5573, that could even be the RTM build for the service pack. I contacted Microsoft on the matter, and this is not the case.
"The reference comes from 'A multiprocessor computer that is running Windows Vista or Windows XP stops responding on a black screen after
you resume the computer from hibernation' KB article 951126 available here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/951126/. The file versions discussed on the Microsoft Help and Support page, referring to a
hotfix for Windows XP SP3, are accurate," a Microsoft spokesman revealed in an email to Softpedia.

Microsoft tweaks anti-piracy check for Windows XP
Microsoft has updated software that verifies whether a copy of Windows is genuine in its Windows XP Professional edition, making it similar to the
notification in Windows Vista and thus more persistently visible to users. In a blog posting attributed to Alex Kochis, a Microsoft director of
product marketing and management, the company said it made the changes to the Windows Genuine Notification (WGA) alerts for XP Pro because it is
"the product edition that is most often stolen."
Now when a version of Windows XP Pro is found to be pirated or counterfeit, the next
time a user logs on to the system, the desktop screen background will be black, replacing whatever custom desktop may have been set by the user. This
will reappear every 60 minutes, even if a user resets the screen's background. Previously, this was not a part of the WGA notification for Windows
XP Pro.

Apple to offer discounts of up to 15% on Black Friday
While Apple is remaining tight-lipped on what we can expect from their stores on Black Friday, one analyst is predicting consumers will see discounts
of up to 15%. According to Kaufman Bros analyst Shaw Wu, Apple's Black Friday sale will be more aggressive than usual. Apple products are
traditionally more expensive than their non-apple counterparts and price reductions are not commonplace for the tech giant. In past years, Apple has
offered Black Friday discounts between 5 and 10%. If Wu's prediction is correct, consumers will be seeing a reduced price on the iPod, iMac, and
MacBooks. However, Wu is skeptical as to whether or not the iPhone will be subject to the Black Friday discounts.

'Windows XP Mode' revealed for Windows 7

tell from the name, it's a method to provide better compatibility in Windows 7, and to pull it off with as little trouble as possible. It's
also dubbed XPM, or formerly Virtual XP.
