26.9.2008Windows Vista DVD hologram explained
An
astute
Windows user was intrigued
by the holographic image on
the face of the Windows Vista
Business DVD and decided to
take a much closer look,
discovering in the margin a
microscopic photograph of
three men. Just who they
could be? The user posted a
blog entry mentioning the
discovery, which was noticed
by a few others in the
community and has prompted a
number of people to contact us
in Windows to find out just
exactly what is going on.
The real story is
interesting, but conspiracy
theorists will be disappointed
to learn that it is not the
result of a deliberate attempt
to deceive. The photo
displays members of the team
who worked on the Windows
Vista DVD hologram design.
Microsofts Anti-Piracy Team
designed a
counterfeit-resistant digital
"watermark" for the
non-encoded surface of Windows
Vista DVDs.
The
photo in question is only one
of multiple images contained
in the hologram design, all of
whose inclusion serves to make
it more difficult to replicate
a Windows Vista DVD. The
other images are of old master
works of art that are in the
public domain. These images
are part of numerous other
security measures that have
been designed into our media,
packaging and certificates of
authenticity. Hence, even
though this image has been
reproduced on the Web, there
are many other features
providing further security. ..

14.06.2007Windows Update spoof allows early download of Vista SP1
Ever since Vista was released, there has been discussion of when Microsoft would deliver SP1, and whether or not that delivery would be a significant
milestone in the OSs development. Microsoft has downplayed the importance of Vista service packs for months, arguing that Vista is "high quality
right out of the gate," but in the eyes of many businesses and consumers, the release of an operating systems first service pack is the point at
which the product begins to shift from "early release" to "mature product."
Microsoft has released Vistas SP1 to a
group of select beta testers, but a Windows Update spoof has been discovered that allows any user to unofficially "join" that group.
CyberNet News reports (via Ghacks) that a simple registry change will display Windows Vista SP1 as an available update ready for download.
Installation of the beta will place an "Evaluation" watermark on the screen, but Ghacks has information on removing this as well. We dont
recommend doing this on your main system—the service pack is still in beta, after all—but its potentially useful as an early preview tool
for anyone who can load Vista on a secondary system or test rig.

17.10.2007XP Pro to receive WGA similar to Vista SP1
Remember how everyone was excited about how Vista SP1 received a WGA update to not block you from your computer?
Well, the same is coming
to Windows XP. (Professional only, though. Who would want to pirate XP Home?)
From the WGA Blog:
With this update to
WGA Notifications in Windows XP, we've implemented a couple of related features that draw on the notifications experience we designed for Windows
Vista SP1. After installing this version of WGA Notifications on a copy of Windows XP that fails the validation, most users will discover on their
next logon that their desktop has changed to a plain black background from whatever was there previously (see below).
The desktop
background can be reset to anything else in the usual ways, but every 60 minutes it will change back to the plain black background. This will continue
to happen until that copy of Windows is genuine.
Also, the user will see the addition of what we call the "persistent desktop
notification." This notification is similar to a watermark but works a bit differently. The image (see below) appears over the system tray and is
non-interactive in the sense that you can't click on it or do anything to it.
As with previous releases, if a copy of Windows fails
validation, notifications will appear above the system tray regularly - and we will continue to have the pre-logon message, the logon interrupt
message and the messages that appear from the system tray. jcxp.net -

23.02.2007Taking a detailed look at Windows Vista DVD hologram
Microsoft has been quick to
explain why the holographic
image on the face of the
Windows Vista DVD includes a
microscopic picture of three
men who just so happen to be
members of the team who worked
on the Windows Vista DVD
hologram design. Microsoft's
Anti-Piracy Team designed a
counterfeit-resistant digital
"watermark" for the
non-encoded surface of Windows
Vista DVDs. Multiple images
are contained in the hologram
design, all of whose inclusion
serves to make it more
difficult to replicate a
Windows Vista DVD. The other
images are of old master works
of art that are in the public
domain.
The images
are less than 1mm in size and
are not visible to the naked
eye, so must be viewed using
optical magnification. Their
presence does not affect the
contents of the DVD and these
security measures were never
intended to be impossible to
find, but rather difficult to
reproduce. While it's
extremely difficult to
replicate a holographic design
in general, the inclusion of
original images makes it that
much more so.

25.05.2006Microsoft patents watermark technology
Microsoft has won a patent for a digital-watermarking technology that could be used to protect the rights of content owners even when digital music is
distributed without DRM protection. The technology, called "stealthy audio watermarking," inserts and detects watermarks in audio signals that can
identify the content producer, "providing a signature that is embedded in the audio signal and cannot be removed," according to a filing with the
U.S. Patent and Trade Organization (USPTO).
The application for U.S. patent 7,266,697 was filed May 3, 2004, by Darko Kirovski and
Henrique Malvar, both of whom work at Microsoft Research. Malvar is a Microsoft distinguished engineer and managing director of Microsoft Research in

28.03.200710 Ways Vista is more annoying with Windows 7 available
We all know Windows Vista got a bit of a bum rap. Its biggest sin was that it shipped earlier than it should and its reputation has never recovered.
However, with Windows 7 now out, those of us who have to switch between PCs now find ourselves discovering completely new things about Windows Vista
that are annoying -- because they are things that Windows 7 made so much better. Here's our list... #1 "Program not responding" Windows
Vista loved to throw programs under the bus for not responding. This was especially true of Windows Explorer which regularly would fade out a window
because it was trying to access a network resource.

05.11.2009Microsoft Patents "Uncrackable" DRM
Microsoft may have just succeeded in giving the lie to claims by anti-DRM advocates that tech and record companies should forget about digital-rights
management because they can never come up with something that's totally immune to cracking.
That's because two inventors
working in Redmond, Darko Kirovski and Henrique Malvar, have taken concepts from spread-spectrum technology--used by the military for secure radio
communications--and adapted them to the task of permanently inserting the owner's (aka content producer's) name within MP3 and .WAV files.
Microsoft was awarded
U.S. Patent 7,266,697, entitled "Stealthy audio watermarking," on Sept. 4, for the duo's work.
As the patent's abstract explains it: "The watermark identifies the content producer, providing a signature that is embedded in
the audio signal and cannot be removed. The watermark is designed to survive all typical kinds of processing and malicious attacks."

19.02.2008CES: Where Vista Wasn't
Windows Vista was everywhereand yet nowhere at this year's Consumer Electronics Show.
Vista was everywhere, because the
operating system was on most PCs. But it was nowhere, in terms of branding and marketing. Microsoft banners and other promotional material reverted to
"Windows" branding with no "Vista." Where Microsoft had Vista, something else accompanied it, like Windows Live, Media Center or Windows Media
Extender.
Now what does that say about Vista, the brand and Microsoft's commitment to Windows XP's successor? Has
Microsoft given up on Windows Vistaas a brand, at least? The answer is perhaps yes.
