Microsoft deploys Linux powered WLAN

The next time Bill Gates sends an e-mail through Microsoft's shiny new Wireless LAN it will be passed through a behind-the-scenes Linux-based network appliance.

Earlier this year Microsoft and Aruba Networks jointly announced the two companies will work to replace Microsoft's existing Cisco wireless network with Aruba's centrally-managed infrastructure, which eliminates the need for individual changes on the access points.

Windows' new saleswoman talks '7'

In some senses, Tami Reller has one of the toughest jobs in technology. She is tasked with selling Windows 7 in the wake of Windows Vista and amid a relentless assault from Cupertino in which the PC is depicted as slow, virus-ridden, and buggy.

In another sense, though, her job is getting a lot easier. After three years of trying to muddle through Vista, Microsoft is ready to release Windows 7--a product that, by most accounts, is much better than its predecessor...

Vista not really helping PC sales, says report

Although Microsoft wants consumers to believe that Vista has reinvigorated the computer market, research firm In-Stat says it really has no impact at all.

"System sales that had been muted waiting for systems pre-loaded with Vista rather than XP are expected to work through sales channels in the next two quarters," said In-Stat analyst Ian Lao. "However, these sales represent an offset from last year rather than actual new demand creation."

In other words, the long-term expectations have not changed in the wake of Vista's launch. In-Stat predicts 300 million PCs to be sold in 2009, the same number it predicted when Windows XP was still the most recent OS...

Microsoft says 'no Alan Wake in 2007'

Microsoft has dashed any last vestiges of hope fans of Alan Wake may have had for the game's release this year, confirming it's not a 2007 title.

Alan Wake is a title that the company wants to nurture and ensure it's "really ready" when it's ushered back into the limelight, managing director of Microsoft Game Studios, Shane Kim, told Game Informer.

However, Kim explained that it's a game Microsoft wouldn't be talking about if it were "way out in the future". So 2008 then? Could be.

Gartner: 'Wake up IT, you work in business'

To remain relevant, IT managers need to wake up and admit they work in business, not IT, Gartner's leading analysts said at the keynote address at the Gartner Symposium in Sydney.

"None of you are in IT, all of you are in business," said Andy Kyte, VP and Gartner fellow.

IT has become invisible to end-users and should rather be called OT or Operational Technology, according to Kyte. At the same time, the way businesses procure technology is changing, for example Software-as-a-Service, allowing technology to seep into the business beyond the IT department's control.

"So where does that leave IT professionals?" Kyte asked. "We need to ask what we do, what to achieve, what is expected of us, and how we are perceived by our peers in business," he said.

Vista licence options make Macs look cheap

A UK property asset management company is examining Apple Macs and Linux desktops to cut its dependency on Microsoft in the wake of the software giant's aggressive licensing options.

Capital & Regional has about 700 PC users and currently runs Windows XP Pro and Office XP Pro, Chief Information Officer Richard Snooks has hit out Microsoft's aggressive licensing policies.

"We are feeling the pinch of the aggressive revenue targets of Microsoft," Snooks said. "We are asking ourselves, 'Are they (Microsoft) fit for our business?'"

In particular, Snooks isn't convinced by the arguments for upgrading to Microsoft's latest Windows operating system, Vista, and is actively looking at alternatives, including a small trial of a Suse Linux desktop inside the IT department. ..

Microsoft plots embedded OS futures

In his keynote at the Embedded Systems Conference (ESC) last month, Kevin Dallas, GM of Microsoft's Windows Embedded unit, tipped some of his group's future product plans. Included are new versions of Windows CE 6.0 and Windows XP Embedded, plus the arrival of "Windows Vista Embedded."

Before detailing these, Dallas began his talk by providing "examples of where we could improve as an industry." Devices need to be service-aware, he said, citing telephony and navigation as examples.

It should be possible to use a mobile device to receive a phone call at home via VoIP (voice over IP), have it automatically switch to a WAN (and hands-free operation) when moved to a car, then seamlessly switch over to a corporate WLAN at the office, said Dallas. Similarly, he added, navigation devices ought to move information from a PC, to a mobile device, to an in-car system automatically.

Demand for draft 802.11n devices likely to pick up momentum

Demand for draft 802.11n (pre-N) devices is expected to start picking up momentum in the second quarter of this year, buoyed by the launch of Microsoft's Windows Vista OS (operating system), according to sources at Taiwan-based network-equipment makers. New features of Windows Vista, such as improved multimedia streaming and higher transmission rate, may facilitate encouraging users to choose pre-N devices when they buy a Vista-capable PC, the sources indicated.

Recent market rumors saying that Intel may launch a new notebook platform, featuring a built-in pre-N WLAN module, in the first half of this year, also strengthened positive expectations for 802.11n products, the sources noted. Additionally, as the market for pre-N products becomes more mature, makers in line may significantly lower prices in the first half of 2007 to boost sales, said the sources, adding that some makers may begin volume shipments of new pre-N devices built using new-generation low-cost 802.11n chips.

Broadcom: 802.11n unlikely to replace 802.11g

Broadcom has revised its outlook for 802.11n chips, envisioning that 802.11n is unlikely to replace 802.11g as the mainstream technology standard for the WLAN market, according to Michael Hurlston, vice president and general manager of Broadcom's WLAN business unit. The price difference between 802.11n and 802.11g solutions was a fundamental factor in Broadcom's shift in outlook for 802.11n chips, Hurlston added. Since the manufacture of 802.11g chips is mature and the prices for 802.11g devices are very competitive, 802.11g will continue to be the mainstream for the industry, Hurlston stated.
