Normally, one would install Virtual PC to run a beta operating system on top of their production environment. In this case however, you might just be risk taking enough to run a beta operating system as your production environment. In such a case, you may have applications or other things that don't work the way you hoped under this operating system. This is where Virtual PC comes in run a production operating system on top of a beta environment. Clever, huh?

07.08.2009Offline Virtual Machine Servicing Tool 2.0
The Offline Virtual Machine Servicing Tool 2.0 helps organizations maintain virtual machines that are stored offline in a Microsoft System Center
Virtual Machine Manager library. While stored, virtual machines do not receive operating system updates. The tool provides a way to keep offline
virtual machines up-to-date so that bringing a virtual machine online does not introduce vulnerabilities into the organizations IT infrastructure.
The Offline Virtual Machine Servicing Tool combines the Windows Workflow programming model with the Windows PowerShellâ„¢ interface
to bring groups of virtual machines online just long enough for them to receive updates from either System Center Configuration Manager 2007 or
Windows Server Update Services. As soon as the virtual machines are up-to-date, the tool returns them to the offline state in the Virtual Machine

18.05.2007Virtual Machine Snapshots with Hyper-V
Robert Larson: Snapshots are a new feature of Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V. Snapshots are a point in time version of a virtual machine¦..what does that
mean you ask? It means that you can be running a virtual machine, take a snapshot and at any point you can select a previous snapshot and revert back
to that point in time.
You end up with the virtual machine in the EXACT configuration that it was when you took the
snapshot¦and I mean exact¦.memory, virtual hardware, processes, state, etc. So you can have a running virtual machine, take a snapshot, change the
virtual hardware configuration, format the disk and install a different OS, it does not matter, when you apply the previous snapshot it looks exactly
like it did when you took the snapshot.

18.06.2009Install Windows Vista from a high speed USB 2.0 Flash Drive
Why would someone want to
install a client OS from a
thumb drive instead of a
DVDROM or over the network?
One reason: Performance.
Installing Windows
Vista from a high speed USB
flash drive is in my
experience the easiest &
fastest way to complete a
Windows Vista install. This is
much faster than using a DVD,
gigabit ethernet, or possibly
even some external USB 2.0
hard drives, due to
differences in access speed &
transfer rate. To put this
into perspective, y'know how
installing Windows on a
Virtual PC virtual machine
from an .ISO CD image is
really, really, really fast?
Imagine something
roughly just as fast, except
for doing installations of the
OS on to actual
workstations.

Windows XP with SP3 virtual machine itself. To run Virtual XP Mode, users must be running Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise or Ultimate with
preferably 2GB of RAM with at least 256MB available to virtualization, and a processor that supports hardware virtualization. Many times hardware
virtualization needs to be enabled in the BIOS to be functional.

30.04.2009System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2007 Scripting Guide
Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2007 is a server application that facilitates the centralized management of a large physical and
virtual system infrastructure.
The Virtual Machine Manager 2007 (VMM) command shell is built on Microsoft Windows PowerShell, an
administrator-focused, interactive command-line shell and scripting language that is integrated into the Windows operating system. VMM commands,
called cmdlets, can be used separately to perform simple administrative tasks, as an alternative to using the VMM Administrator Console. VMM cmdlets
and other command-line elements can also be aggregated into scripts to perform more complex tasks and to automate tasks involving a large number of
managed virtual machines that would be burdensome to perform from the Administrator Console.

a
picture is worth a thousand words. I spent some time this afternoon and evening setting up for a fun little test of the Lenovo ThinkPad T61p I
have. As youll recall from my previous post, my laptop is loaded up with 8GB of memory. So I thought it would be cool to fire up a bunch of virtual
machines to see how effectively Windows Server 2008 and Hyper-V allocate and juggle memory. I was able to get fourteen operating system instances
running at the same time. The host OS is of course Windows Server 2008 Enterprise x64 with Hyper-V RC1. In the screenshot, youll notice I am running
six instances of Windows Vista Enterprise SP1 x64 and seven instances of Windows Vista Enterprise SP1 x86. Paging and disk I/O really went up after I
fired up VM number eight.

08.06.2008Windows Home Server on a virtual machine
jaybaz WebLog: Here at Microsoft, when we talk about Windows Home Server, one
of the things that comes up pretty often is a question about hosting WHS in a virtual machine under Virtual Server. Most often people want this
because they already have one always-on machine (a doman controller, a media center PC, etc.), and they don't want another.
In
discussing the problem, a few key bits of advice have come up, and I thought it would be a good idea to write them down here.
One
of the key problems appears when you consider using the WHS to back up the host. It can certainly be done, but when the host goes down, restoring it
is a catch 22.
Dedicate whole drives
Take whole drives & put only one file on each - the .VHD. Make it as
large as possible.
Use external drives
Make all of WHS's drives external. Consider putting them all in a
single enclosure for convenience. eSATA w/ port multipliers may be a good choice.
Have a 2nd physical machine ready
It should already have Virtual Server or Virtual PC installed. A laptop is fine. Make sure it has appropriate ports for the WHS drives.
Recovery strategy
When the regular host goes down:
- Unplug the WHS drives
- Carry them to the 2nd host, and plug in
- Boot the WHS virtual machine. (You may need to create a new VM with the existing
.VHD files.)
- Restore the primary host
- Unplug the WHS drives
- Carry them back to the primary host, and plug
in
- Boot the WHS virtual machine

26.02.2008VMware puts a virtual machine in your pocket
VMware has introduced a public
beta test of ACE 2 Enterprise
Edition, adding on many new
features (including the
ability to distribute virtual
machines on any portable USB
drive) over the previous
release which allowed users to
construct specific virtual
machines and then distribute
them. VMware Pocket ACE allows
users to store any number of
virtual machine images on USB
drives, as long as the user
includes the necessary free
version of VMware Workstation
6.0, which is automatically
installed and started when the
machine image is run.
The Windows version is
available as a hefty 273MB
download. Preconfigured VMware
ACE appliances for Windows
2003, Red Hat Linux, and SUSE
Linux are also available to
download, the latter two in
.rpm binary formats. Also
available is a 39MB download
for the VMware ACE Management
Server application, which
administrators can use to
tightly control how the ACE
virtual machine images are
used. Images can be managed
from central server, and
configured to be available
only to certain users, limit
the use of virtual ports and
devices, encrypt the entire
image for security and even
specify expiry dates for the
images.
