Potential pirates, not Vista, get cracked

35 days before Windows XP was officially released, a pirated key, called the "devils0wn", began circulating around the web which allowed users to run a pirated copy of the operating system. Since then, the key has been used thousands of times and is now a part of Windows XP history. Trying to follow in devils0wn's footsteps, a new crack for Windows Vista is rumored to have become available. Called "Windows Vista All Versions Activation 21.11.06", the key reportedly unlocks any version of Vista. Sounds great for pirates, right? Maybe it is, depending where you stand on software piracy.

Those who download "Windows Vista All Versions Activation 21.11.06" will end up with anything but a cracked version of Vista. The file is neither a crack nor key generator, but it is a trojan installer that installs the malware known as "Trojan-PSW.Win32.LdPinch.aze ." According to APC Magazine, most antivirus scanners will recognize the trojan, but NOD32 and Norton's latest signatures do not.

While most of us dread the thought of a new piece of malware in the wild, it's hard not to like the motive behind this trojan. Nevertheless, any propagation of malware is a bad thing so I'm happy to hear that most scanners can stop this one.

Is Vista x86 a Trojan Horse for Windows7 (Vienna) after-all?

I take an alternative and purely speculative look at the Vista 32bit 4GB Memory limit. And why it may become the most compelling reason to upgrade to Windows 7 (Vienna) and an answer to why Microsoft allowed Vista to take 5 years of development to get to RTM

Mac Trojan hits pirated copies of Adobe Photoshop

Although Apple's Macintosh environment has long been touted by its fans as "more secure" than Windows, a Trojan enabling remote control of Mac machines struck a second time this week.

Earlier found only in illegal copies of Apple's iWork Suite, the Trojan has now turned up in pirated copies of Adobe Photoshop for Mac OS X. Actually, the Trojan doesn't even exploit any OS vulnerability. Instead, it disguises itself as part of the installer package for the application, so it is installed along with the application. Once installed, the malware launches a back door program, thereby allowing an attacker to remotely conduct misdeeds such as copying data.

A tool for detecting and removing specifically this Trojan is now available from SecureMac.com...

Trojan, distributed over torrent, blocks torrent sites

A trojan named Troj/Qhost-AC, has been spotted on torrent sites labeled as a keygen for popular software. The Trojan caused pop-ups on users screens and played a sound file saying "downloading is wrong". The Trojan didn't install any other spyware or malware onto the victims PC, other than blocking the three web sites, something that many users thought was strange.

Pirated Windows 7 Builds a Botnet With Trojan

Attackers pushing pirated, malware-laced copies of Windows 7 have been actively trying to build a botnet.

According to researchers at Damballa, attackers hid a Trojan inside of pirated copies of the operating system and began circulating them on BitTorrent sites. The company reported they shut down the botnet's command and control server May 10, however by that time infection rates had risen as high as 552 users per hour.

Half of Pirated Vista is Malware

According to security vendor DriveSentry, about half of downloads claiming to be free versions of Microsoft Windows Vista are in fact malicious Trojan horses. With Vista's consumer launch just days away, discussion boards and peer-to-peer networks are full of offers of "cracked" versions of Windows Vista. The downloaded programs claim to skip Vista's activation process but are in fact malicious key-logging software and spyware. This isn't anything new though, the same deal occurred with Windows XP. Pirated versions of Vista have been in circulation for several months now, and one called "Windows Vista All Versions Activation 21.11.06" has already been identified as a Trojan. It's an effective technique, said John Lynch, vice president of sales and marketing for DriveSentry. " Someone that's stealing the software to begin with is not going to raise a fuss if the software turns out to be malicious ."

US-CERT Warns of Microsoft Windows CE Trojan

The WinCE/InfoJack Trojan hijacks the infected device's serial number, operating system and other information and uploads it to an attacker-controlled Web site. The U.S. Computer Emergency Readiness Team has raised an alert for an in-the-wild malware attack against Microsoft Windows CE powered mobile devices. According to the US-CERT warning, the Trojan horse program is capable of disabling Windows Mobile application installation security.

The Trojan, dubbed WinCE/InfoJack by anti-virus vendor McAfee, has been programmed to hijack the infected device's serial number, operating system and other information and upload it to a Web site controlled by the attacker. "It also leaves the infected mobile device vulnerable by allowing silent installation of malware. The Trojan modifies the infected device's security setting to allow unsigned applications to be installed without a warning," McAfee said in a post on its Avert Labs blog.

Trojan Remover was written to aid in the removal of Trojan Horses and Internet Worms when standard anti-virus software has either failed to detect the problem or is unable to effectively eliminate it. The majority of Virus and Trojan Scanners are well able to detect malicious Trojan Horses and Internet Worms but are not always very efficient in removing them once they have been triggered.Trojan Remover was written specifically to carry out such a removal without the user having to manually edit system files, including the Registry. The program also removes the additional system modifications some Trojans carry out which are ignored by other Virus and Trojan Scanners. You can download a free fully-working evaluation copy of Trojan Remover by clicking on the download link below. The program will work for a full 30 days, after which it will expire - registration costs $29.00.
