Photos: Installing Vista SP1 beta

Adrian Kingsley-Hughes: Earlier today I downloaded the standalone installer for Windows Vista SP1 build 6001.16659 and installed it on a few systems to see what it was like -- and I thought you might like to take a look at it.

Don't expect huge UI changes after installing SP1 -- the changes are small and subtle. In fact, if you're not familiar with Windows Vista, you might miss the SP1 changes. I've put together an image gallery showing some of the most significant changes.

Windows Vista SP1 availability for technical customers

Mike Nash: On Monday (February 4th), we announced the release to manufacturing (RTM) of Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1). Overall, people are excited to hear that we have reached this milestone, but some are disappointed they are not able to immediately download it.

<...> We've heard the feedback and I want to update you on our plans and progress for making SP1 available to our beta participants, our Volume Licensing customers, and our MSDN/TechNet Plus subscribers:

For broad availability, we are still planning to release in mid-March, since we want to be sure that everyone has the smoothest experience possible.

I want to be super-clear on one point: Windows Vista SP1 is final. It has been fully released to manufacturing and we do not plan to make any changes to the SP1 code prior to public availability. We are confident in the quality of Windows Vista SP1 and know that it will help improve our customers' experiences with Windows Vista.

WAIK Documentation for Vista SP1 Beta 3 and Server 2008 pops up

Now here's an odd one. Microsoft today posted updated documentation for the Windows Automated Installation Kit that includes support for both Windows Server 2008 and Windows Vista SP1 "Beta 3." See below for the download link if you're interested.

The Windows Automated Installation Kit (Windows AIK) is designed to help Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), system builders, and corporate IT professionals deploy Windows onto new hardware. The Windows AIK is a new set of deployment tools supporting the latest release of Windows. This guide describes the current methods, tools, and requirements for deploying Windows.

Supported Operating Systems:
-Windows Server 2008, Windows Vista

Even though it may not be much, it's good to see Microsoft finally posting something publicly regarding Vista SP1. All we need now is the actual SP1 Beta bits...

Windows Update spoof allows early download of Vista SP1

Ever since Vista was released, there has been discussion of when Microsoft would deliver SP1, and whether or not that delivery would be a significant milestone in the OSs development. Microsoft has downplayed the importance of Vista service packs for months, arguing that Vista is "high quality right out of the gate," but in the eyes of many businesses and consumers, the release of an operating systems first service pack is the point at which the product begins to shift from "early release" to "mature product."

Microsoft has released Vistas SP1 to a group of select beta testers, but a Windows Update spoof has been discovered that allows any user to unofficially "join" that group. CyberNet News reports (via Ghacks) that a simple registry change will display Windows Vista SP1 as an available update ready for download. Installation of the beta will place an "Evaluation" watermark on the screen, but Ghacks has information on removing this as well. We dont recommend doing this on your main system—the service pack is still in beta, after all—but its potentially useful as an early preview tool for anyone who can load Vista on a secondary system or test rig.

Why installing Vista SP1 might fail via Windows Update

When you try to install Windows Vista SP1 via Windows Update you can get error: Windows Vista Service Pack 1 is not available for installation from Windows Update and is not offered by Automatic Updates.

To help ensure a positive update experience, Windows Update will temporarily not offer Windows Vista SP1 to systems that have the following device drivers. In some cases, these device drivers are problematic on Windows Vista-based computers when you update to Windows Vista SP1. By installing updated device drivers, you will resolve the issue and enable Windows Update to offer Windows Vista SP1.

Microsoft Clears Vista SP1 WDK Beta Confusion

The Windows Driver Kit team sent an updated e-mail earlier today regarding yesterday's Vista SP1 WDK Beta notice.

We have included both the original and new e-mails below:

Original e-mail from yesterday:
A new beta WDK build is now available for download on Connect. This WDK beta release to Connect coincides with the recent OS beta release for Vista SP1 Preview. Please take a few moments to install the new build and test as applicable for your needs. As always, please file bugs as quickly and detailed as possible.

New e-mail from today:
Apologies All, We made a typo in the last notification that went that referenced the wrong OS. We didn't mean to imply or cause any confusion on the availability of the Service Pack for Vista. The WDK build available now on connect is the latest for Windows Server 2008.

Thanks,
The WDK Beta team

Microsoft have also now posted the actual WDK bits on Connect. The filename for the download is 6001.16549.070628-1825-WDKSP1_ EN.ISO. Although SP1 is mentioned in the filename, the description of the download states that the "WDK build is to compliment the latest Windows Server 2008 beta builds".

For those interested in checking out the latest WDK Beta bits, head over to Connect and apply for the Beta here.

Based on the results found, the site has concluded that Windows 7 currently has a slight edge over Vista...

Releasing Windows Vista SP1 for more languages

Chris Flores: It has been almost a month since we released Windows Vista SP1 to Windows Update in 5 languages. To date: millions of people have successfully installed Windows Vista SP1 on their PCs. So we're happy to announce the next step for Windows Vista SP1 availability.

We are excited to report that today we are making Windows Vista SP1 available to folks running Windows Vista in any of the supported languages. Starting today, users will be able to choose to manually install Windows Vista SP1 via Windows Update or download the standalone installer from the Microsoft Download Center (x86 and x64) for any of the 36 supported languages, not just English, Spanish, German, French, and Japanese. For now, it is available for users who visit Windows Update or the Microsoft Download Center. We encourage most users to get Windows Vista SP1 via Windows Update-which will provide the best update experience.

A Warning About the Windows Vista SP1 Beta Standalone Installer

Robert McLaws: By now you're aware that the Windows Vista SP1 Beta has been released to beta testers for a thorough shakedown. I just wanted to give anyone who still has UAC on a bit of warning. If you right-click the installer and select "Run as Administrator" first, then it won't take nearly as long to extract the files. Otherwise, it takes almost 15 minutes just to fail thrugh the copy the first time, until you finally get the UAC dialog.

Also, be aware that, while it says it can take up to 30 minutes, it's closer to an hour, and it will restart 3 or 4 times in the process (checking the box at the beginning is definitely advised). I've been running SP1 on my main machine for a few hours now, and it seems to be pretty stable. I'll have more on this later.

Microsoft releases Windows Vista SP1 RC Refresh 2

The Windows team stepped up a gear and have released SP1 RC (Release Candidate) Refresh 2 today. In the past this probably would of been called RC3.

Microsoft said this release would reach just 15,000 official beta testers who can download it through Windows Update or as a stand alone file. As with previous builds, the Service Pack requires an RTM version of Vista without earlier SP1 updates applied.

Service Pack 1 is expected to be made available in the middle of next month.

Windows 7 Beta 1 Vs Windows Vista Vs Windows XP

After Windows 7 beta 1 leaked, many bloggers caught hold of it very soon and started testing/using Windows 7. Adrian Kingsley-Hughes from ZDnet has benchmarked Windows 7 with its successors Windows Vista and Windows XP. The Windows 7 build 6.1.7000.0.081212-1400 was considered for testing. Since its 32bit, it was tested against 32bit versions of Windows Vista SP1 and Windows XP SP3.

Microsoft Windows Vista SP1 on MSDN & TechNet (Plus)

Microsoft sent out a mail on Wednesday informing MSDN and TechNet Plus users that Windows Vista SP1 images as well as Windows Server 2008 (RTM) have been made available to subscribers. Upon checking however, I was unable to find the promised SP1 image on my TechNet subscription.

Microsoft had last week, backpedaled and decided to move the release for certain customers and beta testers up from mid-March to mid-to-late-February. I imagine some subscribers have yet to see it appear on their download list but should all go according to plan, those images should be made available before March.

Up to 3 pre-requisites will start appearing through Windows Update for everyone else before mid-March, which is required before SP1 can be installed on Windows Vista. This is due to an update of the update service from within Windows that is required before SP1 can be installed.

Announcing Windows Vista SP1 Release Candidate (RC)

Nick White: Today we're making available the release candidate (RC) of Windows Vista SP1 via Microsoft Connect, and tomorrow subscribers to TechNet and MDSN will have access to those RC bits too. In addition, the RC will be available to the public next week via Microsoft's Download Center. The release candidate phase of beta software is typically the final phase before the RTM (release-to-manufacturing) of a product and indicates that the code has attained a significant level of performance and stability.

Let me call out several changes made since the Beta release of Service Pack 1 -- many of which came about as a result of direct feedback from our Beta-testing community (thank you!)...

Vista SP1 Beta Released to Testers

To much surprise, participants of the Windows Vista SP1 TechBeta program were finally greeted with an official download for the first beta, build 16659, of Windows Vista Service Pack 1 on Connect.

There are two downloads available to testers, a full ISO which is approximately 2.95GB for the X86 client, 2.89GB for the X86 Europe (N) client and 3.79GB for the X64 client, or stand alone installers which are approximately 1.22GB for testers to install on their systems currently running RTM.
