Microsoft's profits drop for first time in 23 years

It goes to show that no company is truly recession proof. Microsoft is reporting that sales have fallen for the first time in 23 years. According to numbers released by Microsoft sales have fallen 6% year over year. What can be cited for the drop in MS sales? Apparently netbooks are one of the major contributing factors. Consumers are buying cheaper products during these hard times and there are many netbooks that sell with a Linux flavor installed as opposed to Windows variants. Blame can also be attributed to Vista's poor demeanor in the market place as consumers continue to look negatively at the operating system.

Microsofts $30 Billion Vista Bump

It turns out someone does like Windows Vista, along with Office and the other stuff Microsoft sells. Indeed, the company sold $1.1 billion more of that stuff in the second quarter than analysts expected. The companys profits rose by 23 percent.

In after-hours trading today, investors bid up Microsofts shares by 12 percent, to nearly $36. That added about $30 billion to its market value. Microsoft hasnt seen that high a stock price since 2001.

Chatter in the tech world has been that Windows Vista is a dog, and that customers are holding off upgrading, or are even downgrading to the five-year-old Windows XP. In the companys earning release, Kevin Johnson, president of the division that sells Windows, insisted otherwise...

Microsoft denies it profits from Vista-to-XP downgrades

Microsoft Corp. has denied that it makes money when users "downgrade" Windows Vista to the older XP, as a lawsuit filed last week alleges.

The lawsuit, submitted to a Seattle federal court last Wednesday, stems from the $59.25 fee that a California woman was charged in mid-2008 when she bought a Lenovo laptop and downgraded from Vista to XP.

Microsoft dropped Vista hardware spec to raise Intel profits

According to an email sent last February by Microsoft general manager John Kalkman, the software giant lowered Windows Vista's minimum hardware requirements to ridiculous levels only because Intel needed to sell more graphics chipsets.

The email was just one of many released in response to a federal class action suit that accuses Microsoft of misleading the world with those "Windows Vista Capable" logos it slapped on new PCs in the run-up to the operating system's debut. The logos appeared on system more than nine month before the OS was unveiled.

Judging from these emails - unsealed by the court this week and spewed to the digerati by Todd Bishop of Seattle Post-Intelligencer - the case has a pretty good chance.

"In the end, we lowered the requirement to help Intel make their quarterly earnings so they could continue to sell motherboards with the 915 graphics embedded," John Kalkman wrote to Scott Di Valerio, who oversaw Microsoft's dealings with PC partners.

Will Vista Pump Up Microsoft's Future Profits?

While the release of Microsoft's next-generation Windows operating system is still months away, Microsoft execs already are projecting strong sales.

Here's why they are so bullish. Microsoft executives already are counting their Vista chickens before the next-generation Windows release has hatched.

Microsoft expects 200 million new PCs to ship with Vista preloaded in the first 24 months that the operating system is available, said Michael Sievert, corporate vice president, Windows Product Management & Marketing. Comparatively, Windows 95 shipped on 67 million new PCs during its first two years of life.

Thanks to Boytoy for the heads up on this one!

Apple earnings, profits, and cash embarrass Microsoft

While Microsoft executives like to talk about Apple as an insignificant company with less than 5% of the worldwide market share of all PCs and servers sold, the Mac maker now has more cash than Microsoft and earns more than half of its profits and over three fourths its revenues.

Microsoft reaps profits from revamped Office 2007 pricing

For Daniel Duffy, president of Valley Network Solutions, a leading Fresno, Calif. systems integrator, the strong demand by his customers for Office 2007 instead of Microsoft Corp.'s other big release this year -- Windows Vista -- was unexpected.

"There are a lot of five- to 50-seat companies getting new installations of Office for the first time," he said. "We figured there'd be more demand for Vista. Actually, I'm a little surprised with the uptake."

So, perhaps, are a lot of people. Although Vista has gotten the lion's share of Microsoft's marketing dollars, its sales performance so far remains mixed. Use of the new OS may be steadily increasing, but many users are clinging to Windows XP, forcing Microsoft to trim its fiscal 2008 projections of Vista's adoption by users.

Here's our list... #1 "Program not responding" Windows Vista loved to throw programs under the bus for not responding.
