Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Beta Whitepaper

When developing Windows Vista, Microsoft set out to provide higher levels of productivity, mobility, and security, with lower costs. After more than six months of broad availability and usage, it's evident that these investments are improving the Windows computing experience. For example, in the first six months of use, Windows Vista had fewer security issues than Windows XP (Windows Vista had only 12 issues, and Windows XP had 36). According to the Windows Vista 6-Month Vulnerability Report by Jeffery R. Jones, Windows Vista had fewer security issues than all the popular operating systems he studied.

Although most companies are cautious when deploying a new operating system, many have already started testing and evaluating Windows Vista for deployment, and some have already deployed Windows Vista into their production environments and begun seeing the business benefits Windows Vista can provide.

Microsoft's efforts to provide the best Windows experience ever in Windows Vista did not end with its launch. This white paper describes the ways Microsoft strives to continuously improve Windows Vista. It then introduces Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1) and describes how the service pack will fit into the ongoing improvement process.

Details on proposed search controls

Under the formal rules for "robots.txt," a Web site may refuse indexing of the entire site, specific directories or specific pages.

However, some search engines have interpreted "disallow" to mean that the site cannot be added to the index but could be fetched for use in various algorithms employed to determine how high a site appears in search results, said Francis Cave, technical project manager for proposed revisions known as Automated Content Access Protocol.

ACAP proposes to clarify that "disallow" refers to indexing. A separate "crawl" command would be added to bar the indexing software, or crawler, entirely.

Vista Desktop Search Annoyance

I thought people might find this fix interesting because it annoyed the hell out of me when I first started using Vista. In the XP days, I was a huge Windows Desktop Search (WDS) fan, and like many WDS fans Vista search wasn't that exciting because of new features but rather, it gave visibility to mainstream windows users that desktop search would change the way they computer.

When I used WDS I typically indexed my whole C: and I carried that practice over to Vista's indexing service. That's when I started having issues. I wanted to to search all my content on the machine, but when I would search for any files in the Start Menu, I would never get any results returned on a search unless they were applications. For example, if I was to search for an excel file, it would not return in the Start Menu even though it was located in "Documents" -- it was very frustrating.

As it turns outs, the quick fix was to change the start menu settings so that the search bar is set to "search entire index" instead of the default "search this user's files." The problem arises due to the user changing the "indexed locations" to include all of the "C:" when the Start Menu is set to "search this user's files." This is a known bug and will be fixed in Vista SP1.

Microsoft: XP SP3 won't arrive until '07

Aiming to keep its focus on Windows Vista, Microsoft is now targeting 2007 for its next Windows XP service pack update.

In a posting to its life cycle Web site, Microsoft set a preliminary date of the second half of next year for the release of Windows XP Service Pack 3 for both home and professional editions. That puts its debut well past the arrival of Vista, which is slated for the second half of this year and later than both outsiders and some insiders had originally predicted.

"We will be releasing another service pack for XP over the course of the product life cycle, and we are tentatively targeting the second half of 2007 for release," a Microsoft representative said in an e-mail to CNET News.com. "However, right now our priority is Windows Vista--we'll have more information to share about the next service pack for XP after Windows Vista ships." ..

When you try to install Windows Vista SP1 via Windows Update you can get error: Windows Vista Service Pack 1 is not available for installation from Windows Update and is not offered by Automatic Updates.

To help ensure a positive update experience, Windows Update will temporarily not offer Windows Vista SP1 to systems that have the following device drivers. In some cases, these device drivers are problematic on Windows Vista-based computers when you update to Windows Vista SP1. By installing updated device drivers, you will resolve the issue and enable Windows Update to offer Windows Vista SP1.

Announcing the RTM of Windows Vista SP1

Mike Nash, Windows Product Management Group: Today we are excited to announce that we have released Service Pack 1 for Windows Vista to manufacturing (RTM) for our first set of languages (English, French, Spanish, German and Japanese).

Service Pack 1 is a very important milestone because it addresses many of the key issues that our customers have identified with Windows Vista over the last year both, directly and through programs like the Customer Experience Improvement Program. With Service Pack 1, we have made great progress in performance, reliability and compatibility. One of the great things about my job is that I get to play with the latest builds of our products -- I've personally been running Windows Vista SP1 pretty exclusively for a few months and I've noticed that my systems run faster and more reliably than they did with the "Gold" release of Windows Vista.

Interview: What Vista SP1 means to you

The first service pack for Windows Vista is slated for release to manufacturing in the first quarter of 2008. The announcement was made via Microsofts Windows Window Vista Blog by Nick White, a product manager at Microsoft. We got a chance to sit down with White to talk about SP1.

On the blog post, White made it a point to mention this service pack is quite different from other service packs offered for previous versions of Windows. Microsoft is taking full advantage of Windows Update to send improvements to Windows Vista customers rather than relying on one big service pack. That being said, the message for Windows Vista SP1 is dont expect new features, but some components do gain new functionality.

So, the biggest question is what will be in Windows Vista SP1? The first is quality improvements (security, reliability, and performance) including all previously released updates. Next, SP1 will include additional support for hardware and standards including an Extensible Firmware Interface (ESO) and an Extended File Allocation Table (exFAT). Probably, the biggest group to benefit from Windows Vista SP1 is administrators.
