16.11.2006Engineering Windows 7 : Disk Space
Windows disk space consumption has trended larger over time. While not desirable, the degree to which it's been allowed is due in large part to
ever-increasing hard drive capacity, combined with a customer need and engineering focus that focused heavily on recover ability, data protection,
increasing breadth of device support, and demand for innovative new features. However, the proliferation of Solid State Drives (SSDs) has challenged
this trend, and is pushing Windows 7 to consider disk "footprint" in a much more thoughtful way and take that into account for Windows 7.

The Inquirer's recent

Unfortunately Apple's Time

but not exactly the cheapest
option. It also seems to have
an esoteric GUI, which may or

also comes with a Shadow Copy

interesting attributes of its
own.

17.08.2006Vista and ExpressCards: An Update
Robert Larson: I have heard from some people that they are not able to get an Sil3132 based eSATA ExpressCard to see an attached drive. I thought it
was just a driver issue until recently I was testing a new Dell Inspiron 1420 notebook and experienced the same issue. I could get the driver to
successfully to install on Vista-32, Vista-64, and Windows 2008 RC0. But only Windows 2008 RC0 actually saw an attached disk drive.
I tried everything, updated the firmware of the eSATA card, the latest drivers, different cards (but same 3132 chipset). Nothing worked on
Vista-32 or Vista-64.
I decided to download Vista SP1 and try that.....Voila, it worked the first time. It even loaded the latest
version of the drivers from Windows Update.
I will try and see if I can find a hotfix that addresses this issue and post it, but
wanted to let you know that if you are having this problem, try installing Vista SP1 on a new disk and see if that solves it.
Note that I installed Vista SP1 slipstreamed as part of a new install, I have not tried an upgrade in place.
BTW, if you are
trying to get a Sil3132 card to work under Windows 2008 RC0 x64, go to
www.siliconimage.com and get the latest drivers from their site. Use the Vista-64 drivers, they work fine....so far ;-)

01.10.2007Hidden Vista tools
If Sven Hallauer ever has a moment to reflect in his Redmond office, he can feel quietly pleased with himself.
As the release
manager for Vista, he had overall responsibility during the development period for the success of the Most Secure Windows Ever project.
For Hallauer, however, the flexibility of the new operating system is just as important as the security features. In particular, Vista is
equipped with far better admin tools than previous versions. Previously, administrators were forced to add tools from Resource Kits, but now Vista
comes with a lot of tools already on board, as well explain later.
You can tell just by looking at the increased minimum hardware
requirements that theres a lot more in the new version of Windows. It used to be possible to keep an installation of Windows 95 under 200MB, but Vista
requires 40 times more hard disk space. Even in comparison to Windows XP, Vista needs five times more space.

27.09.2007Disk Defragmentation Background and Engineering the Windows 7 Improvements
Steven Sinofsky: One of the features that youve been pretty clear about (Ive received over 100 emails on this topic!) is the desire to improve the
disk defrag utility in Windows 7. We did. And from blogs we saw a few of you noticed, which is great. This is not as straight forward as it may
appear. We know theres a lot of history in defrag and how back in the day it was a very significant performance issue and also a big mystery to most
people. So many folks came to know that if your machine is slow you had to go through the top-secret defrag process. In Windows Vista we decided to
just put the process on autopilot with the intent that youd never have to worry about it. In practice this turns out to be true, at least to the
limits of automatically running a process (that is if you turn your machine off every night then it will never run). We received a lot of feedback
from knowledgeable folks wanting more information on defrag status, especially during execution, as well as more flexibility in terms of the overall
management of the process. This post will detail the changes we made based on that feedback.

26.01.2009How To Create a Bootable DVD for Windows Vista (or any Windows for that matter)
If it's been a while since you've needed a boot disk for your Windows machine, you may just be struggling with how exactly to do it. It's not like
the old Windows 98 boot floppy where I could just go into Windows Explorer and make one with a couple of quick clicks of the mouse. However, you need
not worry, since the current process is surprisingly well documented by Microsoft.
What may seem, at first, to be a complex task
is actually fairly simple. There are essentially seven steps to create a bootable DVD or bootable UFD (USB Flash Drive), all of which are command line
based. While the seven steps are relatively straightforward, the Microsoft article outlining those steps has a slightly obscure title: "
Walkthrough:
Create a Custom Windows PE Image." Anyway, this Walkthrough, for all intents and purposes, is a step-by-step how-to for creating a bootable DVD
disk.

02.11.2005Engineering Windows 7: Disk Space
Steven Sinofsky: This post is about disk space and the disk space consumed by Windows 7. Disk space is the sort of thing where everyone wants to use
less, but the cost of using a bit more relative to the benefits has generally been a posiitve tradeoff. Things have changed recently with the
availability of solid-state drives in capacities significantly smaller than the trend in spinning drives. Traditionally most all software, including
Windows, would not hesitate to consume a 100MB on a specific (justified) need when looking at a 60GB (or 1,500GB ) drive; with desirable machines
shipping with 16GB of solid-state storage, we are looking carefully at the disk space used by Windowsboth at setup time and also as a PC ages. We
also had a specific
session at WinHEC on solid-state
drives that might be interesting to folks. This post is authored by Michael Beck, a program manager in the core OS deployment feature team.

04.01.2006Windows Vista Performance, Responsiveness, and Reliability Update Available (KB943899 v2)
This update improves performance, responsiveness, and reliability of Windows Vista in various scenarios. This update resolves the following issues on
a Windows Vista-based computer:
- You receive a "Stop 0x000000A0" error when you try to switch the computer to the hibernate state.
- You receive a "Stop 0x0000009f" error when you switch the computer to the hibernate state or to the standby state. Or, you receive this
Stop error when you resume the computer from the hibernate state or from the standby state. This problem occurs on a computer that has a wireless
network connection.
- The disk does not spin down after a specified time of inactivity.
Additionally, this update can help
improve performance when you perform operations that are related to large disk I/O. After you apply this update, you may notice up to a 15 percent
performance improvement in some copying operations and when moving some large files.

technology is not compelling enough and won't be until technology breakthroughs change solid-state disk's performance and reliability.

Microsoft has made available the official Windows 7 Upgrade chart, via allthingsd which indicates which previous versions of Windows are available for
an in-place upgrade to Windows 7, and to which version they can upgrade. You can view the chart below: As you can see from just a glance at the
chart, it's relatively confusing. Windows 7 offers no direct upgrade path from XP, which was announced very early on in the Windows 7 development
life cycle. Very specific upgrade paths from other versions of Windows Vista exist also. You can perform a "Custom Install" which is pretty much a
clean install, but you have the option to install Windows 7 to another disk without overwriting data.

29.09.2006Boot Record Rootkit Threatens Vista, XP, NT
In 2005 Derek Soeder and Ryan Permeh, researchers from eEye Digital Security, presented
eEye BootRoot. The technique used in their project wasn't new
and had been popular in DOS times, but they first successfully used it in Windows NT Environment. The eEye Digital Security researchers skipped one
part - BootRoot didn't hide the real content of affected sectors like old DOS
Stealth MBR viruses, but it had only been
created to show the possible way to compromise Windows NT OS.
Unfortunately, all the Windows NT family (including VISTA) still
have the same security flaw - MBR can be modified from usermode. Nevertheless, MS blocked write-access to disk sectors from userland code on VISTA
after the
pagefile attack, however, the first sectors
of disk are still unprotected!
