Machines with Centrino CPU's will also get a new sticker-logo from now on, saying only 'Centrino', without the real CPU name. The amount of cores will still be mentioned on the sticker.

6.9.2007Windows 7 to have only one "compatible" logo
The Register is reporting on an interesting story from WinHEC about how Microsoft is
planning to change how it will run the “compatible with Windows 7” logo program.
Microsoft seems to have learnt its lesson
after the disaster that was the Vista compatible program which had 4 different logos and would eventually see Microsoft ending up in court facing a
class action lawsuit.
Microsoft confirmed to partners on Wednesday that there would only be a single sticker that covers all PC’s
peripherals and software that has been certified to work with Windows 7 when it’s released.
The changes are timed to coincide with
Microsoft’s continued push towards Windows 7, helping partners to start developing products earlier than with Vista, which had only a relatively
small number of compatible programs ready when it launched.

Brandon LeBlanc: I caught up with Deryl McCartney, Marketing Manager for the Windows Vista Logo Program, to get a general update on Certified for
Windows Vista product as of today.
Just to re-cap: Certified for Windows Vista products are products that carry the above logo.
This logo represents a group of applications and hardware that have gone through an extensive certification process that means they work great with
Windows Vista. We want users who are looking for devices, applications, or PC components to easily be able to identify the ones that will give them
the best experience in Windows Vista today. When I go into a store looking for something for my PCs I always "
look for the logo ".
As
of April, we currently have over 5,000 products that are Certified for Windows Vista. Since last July, the amount of Certified for Windows Vista
products has almost doubled! As you can see - we've seen quite a bit of growth with new Certified for Windows Vista products entering the market.

Of course, the logo can't just be handed out willy-nilly and programs must meet a strict set of technical requirements in order to qualify. To help
developers with the process of testing their applications,
Microsoft
announced today the first Alpha release of the Windows 7 Software Logo Toolkit.
The toolkit is an automated and lightweight
command-line tool which verifies whether an application meets the specified requirements:
- Comply with Anti-Spyware Coalition Guidelines
- Do not modify Windows Resource Protections (WRP) protected resources
- Ensure ongoing quality
- Technical Requirements
-
Clean, reversable installation
- Install to the correct folders by default
- Digitally sign files and drivers
- Support x64 version
of Windows
- Do not block installation or application launch based on OS version check
- Follow User Account Control (UAC) Guidelines
- Adhere to Restart Manager Messages
- Do not load Services and Drivers in Safe Mode
- Support Multiuser Sessions
In order
to download the toolkit, you must first

program. Alternatively, we could just save you the trouble and provide you with the universal invitation code, like so: LOGO-RX8Y-64B9. Once you're

final hardware specs for
Windows Vista. As noted over

"The Vista Capable page at

that PCs that are Capable must

certain CPU/RAM/GPU

the logo." But a Microsoft

"The Windows Vista Capable

requirements for Windows Vista

01.04.2006Only 104 Applications "Certified for Windows Vista"
Microsoft on Wednesday posted
a page listing 787
applications that have been

far only 104 applications have

of them being Microsoft's own

companies like Ahead,

"Works with Windows
Vista"
The
"Certified for Windows
Vista" logo is a
compatibility designation for
applications and devices that
have passed a rigorous testing
program on computers that are
running Windows Vista. The
technical requirements for
this designation target four
core areas: reliability,
security, compatibility with
Windows Vista and future
operating systems, and
installation and removal.
The "Works with
Windows Vista" logo is a
compatibility designation that
is designed to encourage
Windows Vista compatibility
for the current generation of
Windows-based applications. To
receive this designation,
software companies test their
applications to make sure that
the applications meet the
program's
guidelines.
Betane

reports
that "McAfee and other major
vendors has yet to make the
list, which Microsoft says
will be updated each week. The
small number of applications

05.10.2009Microsoft will not extend availability of XP
Microsoft announced yesterday the worldwide extension of the availability of Windows XP Home for an emerging, new class of mobile personal
computers commonly known as ultra-low-cost PCs, or ULCPCs. Windows XP Home for ULCPCs will be available until the later of June 30, 2010, or one year
after general availability of the next version of Windows.
That extension does not apply to other editions of Windows XP; such as
Professional, Tablet and Media Edition.
PressPass: Will Microsoft extend sales of other editions of Windows XP?
Dix: No, there
is no plan to extend sales of other editions of Windows XP beyond June 30, 2008. We are very proud of the progress that we have made with Windows
Vista over the last sixteen months. Since its launch, Windows Vista has become the fastest-selling operating system in Microsoft history, and more
than 100 million Windows Vista licenses have been sold worldwide.
Last fall, our OEM partners asked us to extend sales of Windows XP to
give their customers more time to transition to Windows Vista while we worked with other software vendors to expand application compatibility. Today,
more than 2,500 applications have received the Windows Vista logo (a ten-fold increase since launch) and more than 78,000 devices and components are
supported by drivers either in-box or on Windows Update. On NPD’s list of the top 100 consumer applications selling at retail, 98 are now
compatible—and the latest versions of the top free downloads (Adobe Reader, Shockwave and iTunes) are all compatible.
