First Looks at Windows Vista Media Center
Microsoft's Media Center Edition of Windows XP has had a hard time. Though it's hard to call it a poor seller, MCE certainly has a market penetration that represents only a tiny fraction of the many millions of computers running Windows XP. And why should it? Most users don't have nice hi-def TVs hooked up to their PCs, or TV tuners, or really any need to enjoy their music, video, and TV stored on their PC via a 10-foot user interface. It doesn't help that the first edition of Media Center wasn't very good, either. Then again, Microsoft bounced back with its second effort, Media Center Edition 2005, one of the most improved software products ever.

31.01.2007Microsoft reassures partners on Vista compatibility
Microsoft has used its annual

products.
Chief
operating officer Kevin Turner

customers made it clear
application compatibility for
Windows Vista "needed to be

Turner
joined with vice president of

that 1,900 applications are
now converted, with 10,000
devices certified either
Windows Vista Ready or Windows
Vista Capable (a weaker
designation).
Using
the kinds of well-worn
corporate qualifiers that call
for a good coachman and a team

Sievert claimed device
coverage for Windows Vista is
"nearly complete" and "the
packaged applications are now
largely in place."..

27.03.2008Partners helping fix Vista Software Compatibility Issues
James Senior: When chatting with people about the deployment of Windows Vista within their organisation, one of the topics that comes up is software
compatibility. It's a no brainer that their business applications continue to work whilst they are enjoying the benefits and features of Windows
Vista. Microsoft have worked hard to ensure we had a large number of software vendors ready to offer their software as "
Certified for Windows Vista" or "
Works with Windows Vista". These certifications
mean that either software is designed specifically to take advantage of new features in Windows Vista or is compatible with Windows Vista.
Whilst these certifications go along way to answer questions about software compatibility, there are still bespoke software solutions or
legacy applications that might not have been tested by Microsoft to gain the certification. For businesses in this situation there are a range of
tools that will help test the compatibility of applications on Windows Vista. Microsoft provide a great toolset, for instance, called the
Application Compatibility Toolkit which is worth checking out for the analysis of your software portfolio.

04.03.2009Windows 7: Application Compatibility Testing -- Overview
Steven Sinofsky: Delivering a new release of Windows includes a major effort to insure that applications continue to function as well on the new
release as they have on the previous release. At the PDC we talked about some of the new areas of Windows Vista that reduced this level of
compatibility, such as changes we made around the OS security model. With Windows 7 we renewed our engineering efforts to maintain compatibility. As
with device testing, compatibility testing is an effort that spans the entire engineering organization, though we also have a group that is dedicated
to this effort. This post was authored by a set of folks and coordinated by Grant George, the corporate vice president for testing in the Windows
Experience team.

03.03.2009Don't wait for Windows 7: realize the benefts of Vista now
Some customers are considering whether to deploy Windows Vista or whether to skip in anticipation of Windows 7.
The discussion is often phrased
as one of balancing costs and timing of releases. By not deploying Windows Vista, it means missing out on the proven benefts such as better security,
productivity, search, mobility, manageability, and infrastructure optimization. Windows Vista works with more applications and devices than ever
before and can be signifcantly less expensive to support than Windows XP SP3.
There is no need to wait for Windows 7. It is a goal of the
Windows 7 release to minimize application compatibility for customers who have deployed Windows Vista since there was considerable kernel and device
level innovation in Windows Vista. The Windows 7 release is expected to have only minor changes in these areas. Customers who are still using Windows
XP when Windows 7 releases will have a similar application compatibility experience moving to Windows 7 as exists moving to Windows Vista from Windows
XP.
Historically, mainstream deployment occurs not when Microsoft releases a product but 18 months later. While the mainstream deployment
cycle is beginning for Windows Vista now, it isn’t expected to begin for Windows 7 until at least mid-2011

05.04.2009Windows 7 Compatibility Issues May Mar Enterprise Adoption
eWEEK Labs' early tests of Windows 7 RC 1 show that the operating system installs and runs quickly and efficiently; is highly polished for this stage
