retail price of Windows Vista
Home Basic in China to 499
renminbi ($65.80), from 1,521
renminbi -- a 67 percent
reduction. The Home Premium
version of Vista also got a
significant price reduction,
down 50 percent from 1,802
renminbi to 899 renminbi.
The new
prices, which were introduced
Wednesday and outlined in a
statement from the company on
Friday, represent a steep
discount compared to what
users in the U.S. and
elsewhere are charged for the
software. Microsoft's Web
site lists the recommend U.S.
retail price of Vista Home
Basic at $199, with Home
Premium priced at $239.
Microsoft
sold 60 million Vista licenses
by the end of June, but many
in the industry remain
unimpressed by the new

speculation regarding sales
data in China is inaccurate,"

"We're pleased with the
positive consumer response
we've seen around the globe
to the security and usability
enhancements in Windows
Vista--and China is no

wouldn't totally clear things
up by saying just how many
copies it has sold in China,

month's sales of boxed Vista
copies in China were double
those XP had in its first

Microsoft is cooking healthy
price cuts for its latest
operating system, Windows
Vista. The price tag for the
Home Edition of Vista will be
cut in half. But the
additional editions of the
platform will not be
overlooked by the discounts.
While the piece of news was
not confirmed directly by
Microsoft it apparently came
from 8844.com, a Beijing
Federal Software online
software distributor,
according to
Interfax
. The only catch to the Vista
price drop is that it will be
valid only for China. And
while Vista Home Basic will be
sold at half the price, the
remaining editions of the
operating system will
apparently receive 10% off.
"Microsoft
is going to announce the price
drop this afternoon,"
revealed Zan Xiaoqin, a
representative of 8844.com.
"The home edition of Vista
will now sell at RMB 499
($66), about half the previous
price. Meanwhile, the prices
of the business and ultimate
editions will also drop about
10 percent."
Microsoft's move comes on
the heels of the largest
takedown of a software
counterfeiting syndicate
located in the southern
Chinese province of Guangdong.
Backing efforts from the FBI
and Chinas Public Security
Bureau, Microsoft applauded
the shutdown of a global
bootlegged software
manufacturing and distributing
business worth an estimated $2
billion. And while sales of
pirated copies of Windows
Vista are increasing,
legitimate licenses of the
operating system in China are
gathering dust on store

evaluate the security of
Microsoft products. CNITSEC
previously signed an agreement
with Microsoft on security
source code in February 2003
and was authorized to check
over the company's major
source code and technical
data.

security and enhancement of
mutual trust between China and
