23.09.2008Windows Vista Security at 180 Days
Windows Vista recently passed
the 180 day mark since it was
made available to business
customers. Just as he did at
the
90-day
mark, Jeff Jones, a
Microsoft Director from the
Trustworthy Computing group
and frequent blogger on
security topics, has done a
comparison of vulnerabilities
discovered in Windows Vista
versus other operating systems
in their first 6 months of
availability.
Windows
Vista holds up well in this
comparison, showing a
significantly improved
vulnerability profile over its
first 180 days of availability
compared to Windows XP and the
other operating systems that
were examined. Its
interesting to note that
Windows Vista is being
subjected to a greater level
of scrutiny than its
predecessor, as tools used by
security researchers have
become significantly more
sophisticated since Windows XP
was released.

Vulnerability Report" is

04.03.2008Update on Certified for Windows Vista
Brandon LeBlanc: I caught up with Deryl McCartney, Marketing Manager for the Windows Vista Logo Program, to get a general update on Certified for
Windows Vista product as of today.
Just to re-cap: Certified for Windows Vista products are products that carry the above logo.
This logo represents a group of applications and hardware that have gone through an extensive certification process that means they work great with
Windows Vista. We want users who are looking for devices, applications, or PC components to easily be able to identify the ones that will give them
the best experience in Windows Vista today. When I go into a store looking for something for my PCs I always "
look for the logo ".
As
of April, we currently have over 5,000 products that are Certified for Windows Vista. Since last July, the amount of Certified for Windows Vista
products has almost doubled! As you can see - we've seen quite a bit of growth with new Certified for Windows Vista products entering the market.

09.05.2008Server 2008: The Windows Workstation we always wanted
Mary Jo Foley: As
discontent over Windows Vista (with or without Service Pack 1) continues to
swirl, Microsoft is gearing up to launch on February 27 the “other” Windows: Windows Server 2008. Even though it is built from the same
core as Vista, Windows Server is different from Vista in a number of ways, from its role-based configuration options, to its built-in hypervisor.
Guest blogger Jason Perlow (
of asbestos-underwear fame) has been an
advocate for Microsoft making Windows Server 2008 available as in workstation/desktop form. Like the old Windows NT and Windows 2000 Workstation
products, a Windows Server 2008 Workstation would be a form factor for power users who don’t need all the Vista desktop eye candy, but care more
about manageability and performance.

26.02.2008Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Beta Whitepaper
When developing Windows Vista, Microsoft set out to provide higher levels of productivity, mobility, and security, with lower costs. After more than
six months of broad availability and usage, it's evident that these investments are improving the Windows computing experience. For example, in the
first six months of use, Windows Vista had fewer security issues than Windows XP (Windows Vista had only 12 issues, and Windows XP had 36). According
to the Windows Vista 6-Month Vulnerability Report by Jeffery R. Jones, Windows Vista had fewer security issues than all the popular operating systems
he studied.
Although most companies are cautious when deploying a new operating system, many have already started testing and
evaluating Windows Vista for deployment, and some have already deployed Windows Vista into their production environments and begun seeing the business
benefits Windows Vista can provide.
Microsoft's efforts to provide the best Windows experience ever in Windows Vista did not end
with its launch. This white paper describes the ways Microsoft strives to continuously improve Windows Vista. It then introduces Windows Vista Service
Pack 1 (SP1) and describes how the service pack will fit into the ongoing improvement process.

29.08.2007Windows Vista Power Management Guide for Notebooks
Since the introduction of the Windows Vista operating system, there have been many rumours and complaints made about the way that the operating
system manages power settings and how this can impact the battery life and usage on notebook computers. Generally, Windows Vista manages power as well
as its predecessor, Windows XP, although in some configurations it can be a little more demanding on your battery.
This guide
will help you get the most out of your notebook battery when running Windows Vista.

22.02.2008Vista or XP? How about both?
Scott Lowe: Now that Windows Vista SP1 is peeking out from around the e-corner, many śpre-SP1 adverseť organizations will probably begin the process
of evaluting Vista in their organizations. However, for the foreseeable future, there will be those that swear by Windows XP and its stability and
performance. So, whos right? Why not both?
As much as it will pain some to admit it, Vista does have some redeeming
qualities. And, for others, Windows XP continues“and will continue“to serve a very useful purpose in the enterprise. So, what are some of the
situations in which it might make sense to run both Windows Vista and Windows XP in the organization? And, what are the challenges involved in doing
so?

13.03.2008Screencast: Vista SP1 outperforms Windows XP in network IO
Michael Kleef: Its interesting that people seem to think that Vista underperforms in every area of the system which is quite an incorrect perception.
In this demo I show how Vista outperforms Windows XP and I show the under the covers process traces of just how it achieves it.
Demo environment consists of two images. One Vista SP1 and the other Windows XP SP2 both on the same HDD IO and communicating across my home
wireless network to a Windows Server 2008 box on my main LAN. Once the two images get going latency gets introduced and things start to slow
down....except Vista doesnt slow down. Watch and see!

08.05.2008Windows 7 Beta Testing Will Be A Windows Vista Logo Requirement
Even before Microsoft has published the first beta of Windows 7 it is
working to ensure it will not repeat the
same failings of Windows Vista. In a March 21 2008 update to the
Microsoft Hardware Logo Program
Requirements Microsoft added a new provision for Logo Certification which will require every one requesting Windows Vista logo certification to
submit a test logs from Windows 7 as well, once a beta is available.
This new policy, which will become effective June 1, 2008,
says there is no requirement that you pass the Windows 7 test to get your Windows Vista Logo Certification, just that you submit it and resolve any
issue found before launch of the next OS (Windows 7).
