Windows 7 has already earned itself a blue ribbon, and it isn't even in stores yet. Many Vista users will migrate to Redmond's latest and

Microsoft will be granting both XP and Vista users the right to buy "Upgrade" versions of Windows 7 which run for considerably less money. But in
terms of how you can perform an upgrade on a machine already running Windows, for some the in-place upgrade option will make the experience seamless;
all your programs, files and settings will remain untouched coming from certain versions of Vista.

04.05.2009Microsoft slashes Windows Vista prices
Microsoft put up a
Q&A on
PressPass with Brad Brooks. He's the CVP of Windows Consumer Product marketing, and he announced that Microsoft is dropping the price of
retail-packaged product (RPP) versions of Windows Vista when the SP1 version hits the shelves in a few weeks. From the interview:
PressPass: What did you announce today?
Brooks: Today we announced a variety of price reductions for copies of Windows Vista
sold on retail shelves. In developed markets, the price changes will most notably impact upgrade retail versions of the new editions we introduced in
2007 -- Windows Vista Home Premium and Ultimate editions. In emerging markets, we are combining full and upgrade Home Basic and Home Premium versions
into full versions of these editions and instituting price changes to meet the demand we see among first-time Windows customers who want more
functionality than is available in current Windows XP editions. In addition, we are also adjusting pricing on Windows Vista Ultimate in emerging
markets to be comparable to price changes developed market customers will see.
These price changes will take effect globally with the
retail release of Windows Vista Service Pack 1 later this year, though some markets will see reduced prices sooner as a result of promotions many of
our partners already are driving, such as Amazon.com in the United States.

clean install, but you have the option to install Windows 7 to another disk without overwriting data.

No more digital product keys for Windows Anytime Upgrade users
Microsoft is making a tweak to the way it will enable Windows Vista users to upgrade to higher-end versions of Windows via its “Windows Anytime Upgrade”
program.
Windows Anytime Upgrade is a program was a Vista marketing program via which Microsoft has allowed customers to move
from lower-cost, less feature-rich
versions of Vista to higher-end versions.
Starting February 20, Microsoft is planning to end distribution of digital product
keys, company officials said on February 7. Instead, customers will need to obtain a Windows Anytime Upgrade kit, consisting of a Windows DVD and
product keys, either directly from Microsoft, via snail-mail, or in person via a Microsoft retailer. Anytime Upgraders still can order the upgrade kit
online, but the key will be sent by snail-mail.)

Gartner: Vista antitrust tweaks to take years
Antitrust related changes to
security in Windows Vista
64-bit will take years to
complete and will cause
compatibility trouble in the
interim, according to
Gartner.
Users of
security technologies such as
host intrusion-prevention
systems, or HIPS, should
postpone buying 64-bit
versions of Vista, Gartner
analyst Neil MacDonald wrote
in a research note published
on Wednesday. MacDonald also
noted that many integrated
security products today
include HIPS functionality.
In response to
antitrust concerns from the
European Commission, Microsoft
last week said third-party
security software will be able
to interact with the kernel of
64-bit versions of Vista.
Security companies now have
unfettered access to the core
of 32-bit versions of Windows.
But they complained that a
kernel shield called
PatchGuard in 64-bit versions
of Vista, which is intended to
stop hackers, blocks security
products, too. 64-bit Windows
is expected to eventually
supplant 32-bit versions.
While Microsoft has
promised to give its security
rivals controlled access to
the Vista kernel, the
programming interfaces to do
so still need to be
developed.
Access
to the Vista kernel is one of
two concessions Microsoft
made. The Redmond, Wash.,
software giant has already
provided security companies
with a way to disable alerts
sent out by the Windows
Security Center, if their
third-party protective
software is installed.

Windows Vista Beta 2, RC1 and RC2 set to expire May 31, 2007
On May 18, pre-release
versions of Windows Vista
(Beta 2, RC1 or RC2) will
begin prompting users with
warning notifications about
the upcoming expiration on May
31. It is therefore
recommended to backup all data
and move to a final version of
Windows before the expiration
date. Between June 1 and
August 28, customers who
continue to use pre-release
versions of Windows Vista will
be able to log in for 2-hour
sessions to retrieve data.
After 2 hours of use, the PC
will automatically reboot
without providing the
opportunity to save data.
If the user would like
to switch editions of Vista,
the appropriate upgrade
version must be purchased and
a clean installation needs to
be performed. Customer Preview
Program participants will not
be receiving discounts, other
than the option to purchase
upgrade versions of Windows
Vista, as opposed to the full
versions. As already noted
previously, performing a roll
back to Windows XP is not
possible.

Understanding Windows Vista Service Hardening
Microsoft has been touting Windows Vista as the most secure Windows ever. Backing up that claim, Microsoft has included a number of new security
features in the operating system. These new features are designed to address some of the common vectors by which previous versions of Windows have
fallen to anonymous miscreants and other criminals.
One such new feature in Windows Vista is known as Windows Service Hardening.
In older versions of Windows, services did not necessarily run with the least possible privileges. In fact, Windows services often ran under accounts
with very high level of access, such as the LocalSystem account. Further, users are often not aware of the services running on their systems, and do
not realise that some services are safe to disable. Finally, services and user applications ran in the same space, which could result in inappropriate
access. As a result of services running with privileges that did not match necessity, and services running that users did not require, Windows
desktops were left more vulnerable to attack.

What is the WINSXS directory in Windows 2008 and Windows Vista and why is it so large?
Joseph Conway: A commonly asked question among people looking at a Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008 installation is śwhy is the WinSxS folder so
big?!ť To answer that question I need to first describe componentization, and how components are managed in Windows Vista.
One
of the largest changes between previous versions of Windows and Windows Vista was a move from an INF described OS to componentization. A component in
Windows is one or more binaries, a catalog file, and an XML file that describes everything about how the files should be installed. From associated
registry keys and services to what kind security permissions the files should have. Components are grouped into logical units, and these units are
used to build the different Windows editions...
