Beginning next month Microsoft will start an upgrade to the Windows Update and Microsoft Update services. Microsoft plans to start the infrastructure update in late August, claiming "it will take a couple of months to complete the rollout." The update is required to "maintain and improve service quality, reliability, and operations." The update will simply improve the user interface for Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 computers running Windows Update, adding a more visible and detailed description of updates as well as improvements in how users are notified about service packs. If you currently apply your updates automatically then this update will not modify the look and feel of Automatic Updates.

An Update For Windows Update

An infrastructure update has been planned for Windows Update client. The gradual roll-out of this update will begin in late July. This update will occur automatically to any system configured to either receive updates “automatically” or “notify” customers that new updates are available for download.

For enterprise customers who use Windows Server Update Services or Systems Management Server, all updating, including the WU client, is controlled by the network administrators, who have authority over the download and install experience. Windows Vista customers who select “never check for updates” in their WU settings will not receive this update until they manually install updates from Windows Update.
In this particular update, there will not make any changes to the way WU looks or feels, instead the following have been improved:
- The length of time it takes Windows Update to scan for updates
- The speed in which signature updates will be delivered

Detailed information on this is posted on the Microsoft Update blog.

Microsoft to push IE8 as an automatic update

Microsoft has announced it plans to offer IE8 via Windows Update. In a move that will likely anger rivals such as Apple and Google, Microsoft will be pushing Internet Explorer 8 via Windows Update. Google raised concerns back in 2006 when IE7 was originally released via Windows Update. Apple received negative press last year when it tried to push Safari to iTunes users. Many users never had Safari installed but it was listed under Apple's software update program for install. The IE8 update will be released as the highest priority update for each operating system. For Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008, it will be listed as Important.

Microsoft Offers Manual Fix to 'Stealth' Windows Update Bug

It turned out to be an insignificant problem after all, rather than something on the order of a rootkit: the discovery that Microsoft's Windows Update feature updates itself even when users turn off "automatic updates" - a fact that Microsoft had actually documented quite well, but which few had apparently read. But now, a claim that the self-updating update subsequently unregistered Microsoft's Windows Update drivers in XP-based systems forced its own drivers to become unregistered...

Microsoft: Another Vista Reliability & Performance Update

Vista’s performance is one of those topics that won’t be exhausted until Windows Seven hits RTM. It all comes down to trade-offs. Ever since the features of Vista were finalized, Microsoft tried to tip the scale the other way by focusing on performance, with the obvious limitation of not disabling any services. Updates regarding performance and stability are numerous, but most have not hit Windows Update as they are not quite ready (preview releases). The Windows Serviceability Team wants feedback on one such update, available for download at the Microsoft Download Center, before its expected release on Windows Update in January.

WDS update revision follow - up

Bobbie Harder: I wanted to get back to you with more information and guidance around the Windows Desktop Search (WDS) issue and the results of our investigation today.

As you know, Windows Desktop Search was published last February 07, as an optional update that was only applicable to systems which had WDS previously installed. Then on Tuesday of this week we revised that update package to be applicable (but still optional) to Windows XP SP2 and Windows Server 2003 SP1+ systems which did not have WDS installed. Unfortunately, in revising this update, the decision to re-use the same update package had unintended consequences to our WSUS customers. Namely many of you who had approved the initial update package for a limited number of machines, had Tuesdays' WDS revision 105 automatically install on all clients because of the expanded applicability scope and because by default, WSUS is set to automatically approve update revisions. We sincerely regret the inconvenience this has caused and extend a sincere apology to all impacted customers.

For those of you who want to uninstall the WDS update revision released Tuesday of this week, this can be done via.....

Microsoft release Windows 7 application compatibility update

Following on from the Internet Explorer 8 update that Microsoft released for Windows 7 Beta a day ago, another update has been released targeting application compatibility. Judging by these two updates released, Microsoft is progressing nicely, and the most recent update targets mainly games that did not run before hand, or had to be opened via compatibility-mode. Interestingly, Microsoft didn't state which applications were targeted in this update, but it is of no doubt that users will find out soon enough. If you're currently having problems with gaming, or have had problems with it, in the Windows 7 Beta, install these updates and post in the comments to show which games now work, or still don't.

Experts Astonished to Learn Windows Update Updates Itself

A Microsoft program manager found himself conducting a tricky bit of PR yesterday, providing for his team's blog a lengthy explanation of a documented feature in Windows that independent researchers discovered only this week: the ability for the Windows Update service to update itself, even when the user's setting for Automatic Updates is "off." Researchers had charged the company with updating software on users' systems without their consent.

"Windows Update is a service that primarily delivers updates to Windows," the Update service's program manager Nate Clinton wrote yesterday. "To ensure on-going service reliability and operation, we must also update and enhance the Windows Update service itself, including its client side software. These upgrades are important if we are to maintain the quality of the service."
