VTP9 has officially been released. Back, and better than ever, VTP9 is sure to be an eye-popper, even for those who have already been using VTP for years.

Some of the new features include:

- New Lightweight "Vista Rainbar" (A sidebar based on the Rainmeter API)
- Improved versions of the highly acclaimed ViStart and ViOrb pair
- A more stable version of TrueTransparency (for emulating the transparent 'glass' we all like in Vista

Get Yer' Windows 7 Stuff

Adaptation is something not one of us enjoys doing; changing your 'style' to make something work is something we do every day; it could easily be avoided.

Microsoft has worked extremely hard to make Windows 7 adapt to YOU, and make it work how and when YOU want it to. The last step in the magical transformation of Windows, is the ability to theme without patching system files. When the interface feels right, working and playing becomes much more fun.

"Give your PC a personal touch" says Microsoft:

They now provide free downloads of themes, wallpapers, and certified gadgets all compiled by Microsoft staff.

By clicking on a theme, it will be downloaded and installed, changing familiar things such as the wallpaper, sounds, icons, and the Aero glass color.

The gadgets are split into two categories: the regular windows gadgets, and the emerging Sideshow gadgets. From traffic maps, to a PowerPoint remote control, they've got a decent selection in there. The best part? They're all Microsoft-certified.

Hopefully in time, they will allow further customization of the themes especially, without patching any files. (Maybe this could be some sort of extra in the best edition?)

For now though, we'll have to live with a wide range of colors, matching wallpapers, and gadgets to go with it. It's a step in the right direction; let's hope it takes us somewhere.

Is Office the new Netscape?

Nicholas Carr: As Microsoft and Yahoo continue with their interminable modern-dress staging of Hamlet - it's longer than Branagh's version! - the transformation of the software business goes on. We have new players with new strategies, or at least interesting new takes on old strategies.

One of the cornerstones of Microsoft's competitive strategy over the years has been to redefine competitors' products as features of its own products. Whenever some upstart PC software company started to get traction with a new application - the Netscape browser is the most famous example - Microsoft would incorporate a version of the application into its Office suite or Windows operating system, eroding the market for the application as a standalone product and starving its rival of economic oxygen (ie, cash). It was an effective strategy as well as a controversial one.

Desktop PC not dead, just changing

The traditional desktop PC is not yet doomed, but is going through a transformation, according to HP.

While laptops are becoming increasingly attractive to consumers and small businesses, the majority of sales to larger businesses are still of desktop PCs.

Speaking at the launch of a series of new products from HP in New York, Alberto Bozzo, the company's European personal systems group general manager of commercial products, said: "The reality is the desktop is not dead -- it is transforming into something else."

Bozzo said innovation would come in virtualised client technologies such as thin clients, blade servers and blade PCs. "This is where the desktop is going. is small at the moment but it is an emerging technology -- small from a volume point of view, but promising," he said...

Sony unveils first AIO desktop with Blu-Ray

Sony today became the first computer builder in the US to offer Blu-Ray in an all-in-one PC with the introduction of the VAIO LT. Larger than the Japanese L series, the 22-inch LT is large enough to be used both as a PC and for watching HD video content; an optional version now includes a Blu-Ray rewriter that can play and burn dual-layer 50GB discs.

Every LT also brandishes HDTV and analog TV tuning that runs independently from the PC, allowing users to watch live video (including over CableCARD) without waiting for the PC to boot up. A VESA wall-mount kit is an option for particularly space-conscious users who need even less of a footprint in the living room or at a desk.

Although Sony did not reveal full specs for the PC's launch, it revealed that every system will include a Core 2 Duo processor, 2GB of memory, a 1.3-megapixel webcam, and 802.11n Wi-Fi. Every model also has a free slot for an easily mounting a second hard drive, eliminating one of the limits to expansion for many all-in-one systems. A stock LT15E model will ship with a DVD burner for $1,900; the top-end LT19U at $2,900 will pack the Blu-Ray drive plus a 2.2GHz Core 2 Duo, a 500GB hard drive, and a 256MB GeForce 8400M GT that can fully decode 1080p video without a significant demand on the CPU. Both variants will ship in October bundled with a media remote.

Google Shoots Down Reports Of Grand Telecom Ambitions

Google appears to be in the midst of a transformation from information provider to telecommunications provider. To those predisposed to see Google marching to conquer, the company is becoming not only a source for information but the owner of the means by which that information is delivered.

The truth is rather more mundane, but let's start with the speculation.

Evidence of Google's grand ambition to conquer the world supposedly can be seen in reports that the company may bid on wireless spectrum in the U.K., in addition to reports that it's likely bid for spectrum rights in the U.S. this January.

The Guardian Unlimited published an article on Friday that states that U.K. regulatory agency Ofcom proposed on Thursday to auction off a third of the spectrum held by mobile carriers Vodafone and O2 and that Google "is understood" to be interested. ..
