Microsoft may offer Windows 7 on thumb drive for netbooks

Microsoft has shown Windows 7 running on netbooks even since it first introduced the operating system, however, helping consumers getting it on there may prove a bit tricky. According to CNET, Microsoft is considering offering Windows 7 on a thumb drive so that netbook owners are able to easily upgrade their machines in case they lack a DVD drive, and are unable to use an external one. Even though Microsoft is considering selling Windows 7 on a thumb drive, there are other options for netbook users to upgrade. Less tech-savvy consumers could pay for someone else to do it, such as a service like Best Buy's Geek Squad.

Terabyte Thumb Drives Made Possible by Nanotech Memory

Researchers have developed a low-cost, low-power computer memory that could put terabyte-sized thumb drives in consumers' pockets within a few years.

Thanks to a new technique for manipulating charged copper particles at the molecular scale, researchers at Arizona State University say their memory is, bit-for-bit, one-tenth the cost of -- and 1,000 times as energy-efficient as -- flash memory, the predominant memory technology in iPhones and other mobile devices.

"A thumb drive using our memory could store a terabyte of information," says Michael Kozicki, director of ASU's Center for Applied Nanoionics, which developed the technology. "All the current limitations in portable electronic storage could go away. You could record video of every event in your life and store it."

Contractor Pleads Guilty To Stealing Classified Data

Jessica Lynn Quintana, a former employee with a contractor at the Los Alamos National Laboratory pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in Albuquerque, N.M. to stealing classified information from the lab and is now facing a maximum of one year in jail and a $100,000 fine. She has lost her security clearance and could also receive up to five years of probation.

Quintana was hired to archive classified information at the multi-disciplinary scientific laboratory in northern New Mexico. According to a release from the Department of Justice, she admitted in her plea that on July 27, 2006, she was working in a secure area at the lab and printed pages of classified documents and downloaded other classified information onto a thumb drive. She put the stolen data in a backpack and headed for home. Quintana told government agents that she stored the pages and thumb drive at her home, which was outside of her authorization limits. On October 17, officers of the Los Alamos Police Department executed a state search warrant on Quintana's home and seized the thumb drive containing classified information. Three days later, the FBI seized the classified printouts during the execution of a federal search warrant on her home.

Install Windows Vista from a high speed USB 2.0 Flash Drive

Why would someone want to install a client OS from a thumb drive instead of a DVDROM or over the network? One reason: Performance.

Installing Windows Vista from a high speed USB flash drive is in my experience the easiest & fastest way to complete a Windows Vista install. This is much faster than using a DVD, gigabit ethernet, or possibly even some external USB 2.0 hard drives, due to differences in access speed & transfer rate. To put this into perspective, y'know how installing Windows on a Virtual PC virtual machine from an .ISO CD image is really, really, really fast?

Imagine something roughly just as fast, except for doing installations of the OS on to actual workstations.

Sony USB thumb drives come with rootkit

As a result of its decision to include a rootkit-based copy protection system in some of its CDs, Sony had to pay $1.5 million in civil penalties and refund users whose PCs were damaged by the software last year. However, it seems that wasn't enough to make the company turn its back on rootkits.

The folks at F-Secure have discovered that software bundled with Sony's MicroVault USB thumb drives installs a driver intended to conceal files in the host system's Windows directory. Said directory reportedly becomes invisible to the Windows API and some anti-virus software, which could potentially allow malware to exploit it in order to avoid detection.

According to F-Secure, Sony relies on the cloaking functionality to conceal data used by the thumb drives' fingerprint authentication system.

Managing USB Thumb Drives - Is Vista Better Than Epoxy?

Chris Chalmers: What's so bad about USB flash drives? Isn't it great that, for less than $50, I can buy device the size of my thumb that holds 16Gb of emails, product designs, and drafts of confidential memos? In a word, NO.

From an e-discovery perspective, tracking and managing all these potential sources of responsive information is a nightmare. Brad Carlson of Fios, Inc. outlines a helpful process in his article, "Collecting Personal Data for E-Discovery" in Computer Technology Review (you can read it here: http://www.wwpi.com/fall-2007/2794-collecting-personal-data-for-e-discovery).

Review: SanDisk 8GB Micro SDHC + MobileMate Micro Reader

Technology is moving at an alarming pace, allowing you to pack more in to a smaller place. Today I will present a continuation in this process: an 8GB Micro SDHC and the accompanying micro reader. The focus of course being on size and density.

The relatively new format, Micro SD, was introduced by SanDisk Corporation as a replacement for Transflash in 2005 and, along with Transflash, remains the smallest memory card form factor with dimensions 15 mm x 11 mm x 1 mm. Starting with petite 512MB versions three years ago, SanDisk has recently released micro drives capable of storing 16GB. The unit being reviewed is only 8GB, however.

I do not intend to mislead anyone here. Compared to a standard thumb drive, the only advantage of a micro SD card is the size. The main reason for this type of memory card existing is to fit large memory capacities in to small devices. Though, this review will go in depth in to the other benefits of having such a small memory card.

Vista Running on Eee PC

Asus Eee PC is, as expected, getting hacked every which way, and Brit Paul O'Brien has managed to squeeze the bloated Windows Vista onto the little Linux laptop. Using vLite, a tool to customize a Vista install before actually installing it, Paul shrunk Vista Home Premium and put the custom disk image onto a USB stick.

He then booted the Eee from the thumb drive, installed and “ here's the clever bit “ shifted the gigabyte-gobbling Side by Side (SxS) directory off the main drive and onto an 8GB SD card.

Using Windows Vistas Complete PC Backup - A Guide

Since I run Windows Vista Ultimate, I can use the very nice Complete PC Backup feature to move my files over to the new hard drive, and I did. Overall, it worked out nicely. You can also use this feature if you bought a new bigger hard drive and want to move everything over to it.

"BlackBerry Thumb" sparks new form of hand massage

Many BlackBerry users feel the "BlackBerry Thumb" affect after spending hours on a hand-held e-mail device. This thumb effect results in sore thumbs, but there is a possible solution. The Hyatt hotel chain found so many of their business travelers were complaining of hand and arm discomfort that they have introduced a special "BlackBerry Balm" hand massage at most of their North American spas.   Corporate spa director Kyra Johnson said guests began asking masseurs to spend more time on their hands and arms because of the growing popularity of PDA (personal digital assistant) devices like BlackBerrys and Treos. The 30-minute massage, that costs about ฮ, begins with heat treatment and uses a "BlackBerry Balm." It "focuses on counteracting tension on various hand and arm muscles, specifically in the thumbs and overworked wrists," according to a Hyatt statement.

The American Physical Therapy Association recently recognized BlackBerry Thumb as an official work place malady -- a stress-related injury due to over-use of any PDA or smartphone. Ontario-based Research IN Motion Ltd's BlackBerry became a technological must-have in the late 1990s as a tool that delivers e-mail to users on the move.

Professor Alan Hedge, an ergonomics specialist at Cornell University in New York state, said the condition is caused by "highly repetitive, forceful thumb movements with the thumbs held back from the palms." The symptoms are pain in the thumb and region around the base of the thumb and hand. Treatment typically consists of resting or strapping the thumb, anti-inflammatory medicines, cortisone injections and, as a last resort, surgery.
