Microsoft Endorses Product That Turns Off Vista UAC Nags

The latest version of a well-reviewed third-party security policy enhancement system for Windows Vista claims to solve what its manufacturer characterizes as "not a secure solution" to a critical problem Windows historically had with administrator privileges on programs. But in the announcement of the upgrade earlier this week, a key Microsoft product manager is quoted as having acknowledged Vista's own take on the solution was not quite enough, effectively reversing his company's stand on User Account Control.

The product is BeyondTrust Privilege Manager 3.5, and its key new feature is the ability to run Vista's UAC transparently without prompting the user for privilege elevation. In Monday's press release, Microsoft director of client security product management Austin Wilson is quoted as not only endorsing the product, but appearing to agree with BeyondTrust's key contention: that the UAC prompts were not only a nag but an insecure solution in itself.

Survey - VARs Fear Dell Will Steal Customers

A Dell-commisioned survey has found that about 60 percent of solution providers are afraid that Dell would compete for resellers' customers, a key hurdle the company must overcome as it tries to court the channel and grow its indirect sales.

In an item posted on Dell's corporate blog, Direct2Dell, Chris Bates, director of the company's Solution Provider Direct organization, said the company ordered the survey as it works behind-the-scenes to create its first, end-to-end channel program.

"According to a Bain survey recently commissioned by Dell, it's not surprising that about 60 percent of solution providers surveyed have concerns about Dell's direct hardware business competing with their sale or resale of hardware to customers," Bates said. "Deal Registration will reduce this conflict and hopefully increase solution providers' trust in Dell." ..

Microsoft's Vista 'Family Discount' Troubles

In the past, early adopters of new Windows versions have had some small hurdles to overcome. Such hurdles may be software incompatibility, or lack of driver support. These sorts of things are almost expected with each new Windows launch. But what would you do if you bought Windows Vista and your product key didn't work. What if Microsoft had no solution and was unwilling to issue you a new key?

Many (if not all) users who took advantage of Microsoft's Vista Family Discount have been issued invalid installation keys and cannot install Windows Vista Home Premium. Microsoft confirms that the keys are indeed valid, but not for Windows Vista. The CSR I spoke with was unable to tell what the key was for, but it did appear to be a valid key, for something.

Microsoft says, This is a known issue and has been escalated to the program manager. When asked what could be done I was told, I can take your name and number and call you back when there is a solution. If that is not acceptable, I can cancel your order and issue you a refund. I was also told, There is no expected time period for a fix at this time.

Purplera1n, unrelated to the Dev Team, has come out with a solution to jailbreak the iPhone 3GS for both Windows and Intel Mac computers. The jailbreak allows users to download Cydia on their iPhone to install unofficial applications on their device. The method installs an application called Freeze onto the device; this installs and unpacks Cydia. Users who install Cydia onto their device can then proceed to install UltraSn0w which was recently released to unlock the iPhone 3G, now unlocks the iPhone 3GS.

Microsoft and Turbolinux Extend Broad Collaboration Agreement

Microsoft Corp. and Turbolinux, a leading Linux client and server distributor in Japan and China, have announced a business agreement that expands on their recent collaborations. The deal advances Linux-Microsoft Windows Server interoperability, furthers research and development collaboration, and provides IP assurances for Turbolinux users.

A key customer component to the agreement is a collaborative śsingle sign-onť solution. According to a recent study released by SupportSoft Inc., a provider of technology problem resolution software provider, password problems including the need to reset them make up one out of every five calls received by corporate IT help desks. This collaboration features the development of a single sign-on solution enabling customers to use one set of credentials to log onto Windows-based and Turbolinux devices. This solution is intended to improve computing efficiencies and cut down on internal IT costs.

śThis agreement represents a business and technical collaboration that will benefit customers,ť said David Kaefer, general manager for intellectual property licensing at Microsoft. śThrough this collaboration Microsoft and Turbolinux are reinforcing our combined commitment to providing real solutions for our customers such as the single sign-on solution. Turbolinux is now one of Microsofts preferred Linux partners, and we are looking forward to continue building bridges between open source and commercial technologies.ť
