According to The Windows Blog, Microsoft have confirmed that the "3 applications at a time" limit that hobbled earlier versions of the Starter Edition has been removed for Windows 7. Now the only effective limit on the number of programs you can run concurrently is set by the amount of your memory. Windows 7 Starter Edition will have other limits, however, in order to differentiate it from other versions of the OS. "Windows 7 Starter does not include: * Aero Glass, meaning you can only use the "Windows Basic" or other opaque themes.

Microsoft may adjust limitations on Windows 7 Starter

According to Paul Thurrott, Microsoft will be lifting the three running application limit for Windows 7 Starter Edition. Previously with XP and Vista, Starter Edition was designed to run on low end equipment and be sold in what Microsoft called "developing markets." But for Windows 7, Microsoft moved Starter Edition into the rest of the world and decided to sell Home Basic in the developing markets instead. Starter Edition is expected to be sold on netbook class systems, so even if there isn't a software coded limit to how many applications you can run at one time, the limited amount of processor and memory resources in the computer will continue to be the deciding factor.

Microsoft added two new versions of its bare-bones Windows XP Starter Edition Tuesday, one in Arabic for the Egyptian market, the other targeted at Turkey.

St arter Edition is a pared-down operating system that Microsoft introduced last year aimed at countries where piracy is rampant and incomes are low. Counting the new editions released Tuesday, Starter Edition is now available in nine languages and 32 countries.

The Arabic and Turkish versions will be distributed in partnership with the governments of Egypt and Turkey, respectively. "Building on our joint success in the Affordable PC Initiative 'PC for Every Home' that has delivered more than a quarter of a million PCs to Egyptian homes, we anticipate the new Windows XP Starter Edition will provide wider and more affordable technology access to the masses," said Dr. Tare Kamel, minister of communications for the Arab Republic of Egypt, in a statement.

Microsoft is denying a recent report that suggests it deliberately included a technical loophole in Windows Vista that lets users install the OS without paying for the full priced version.



In an article that appeared earlier this week in the Windows Secrets newsletter, reporter Scott Dunn noted that the Service Pack 1 version of Windows Vista gives users the option of buying the 'upgrade edition' and installing it on any PC, which enables them to avoid paying for the more expensive 'full' edition.

Microsoft changes Window Server Datacentre licensing

Microsoft has changed the licensing of its Windows Server Datacentre operating system, allowing users buying new servers licensed with the OS to run an unlimited number of virtualised Windows Server instances.

Microsoft said that unlimited virtualisation rights would significantly extend the savings customers gain through server consolidation on the Windows Server platform.

"Together, Windows Server 2003 R2 Datacenter Edition and Virtual Server 2005 R2 are an ideal, cost-effective platform for ‘scale out' virtualization," it said.

By licensing a server's processors with Windows Server Datacenter Edition, users would be able to run Windows Server Standard Edition, Enterprise Edition, Datacenter Edition or a mix of the three editions without having to track the number of virtual machines or pay for additional Windows Server licences.
