Is Windows Server 2008 Workstation the One and True Windows Vista?

There is little choice, at this point in time, for end users looking for a new Windows client. And it is pretty much Windows Vista or Windows XP, or taking into account the evolution of the two products, Vista SP1 and XP SP2, with XP SP3 coming down the pipe "momentarily."

Using Windows Server 2008 as a SUPER workstation OS

Vijayshinva Karnure: Windows Server 2008 is the best OS to be released till date from Microsoft's stable. And the moment I got hold of the RTM build I could not resist installing it on my workstation. I always prefer running a Server OS on my workstation... I have been running Windows 2003 disguised as XP (with all the themes and stuff) all these days.

So here is my tale of how I went about setting up Windows Server 2008 to look and fell like its desktop counterpart Windows Vista.

Server 2008: The Windows Workstation we always wanted

Mary Jo Foley: As discontent over Windows Vista (with or without Service Pack 1) continues to swirl, Microsoft is gearing up to launch on February 27 the “other” Windows: Windows Server 2008. Even though it is built from the same core as Vista, Windows Server is different from Vista in a number of ways, from its role-based configuration options, to its built-in hypervisor.

Guest blogger Jason Perlow (of asbestos-underwear fame) has been an advocate for Microsoft making Windows Server 2008 available as in workstation/desktop form. Like the old Windows NT and Windows 2000 Workstation products, a Windows Server 2008 Workstation would be a form factor for power users who don’t need all the Vista desktop eye candy, but care more about manageability and performance.

winbeta.org - 26.02.2008

Windows Server 2008 is 20% faster than Vista

It seems Microsoft may have a successor (or replacement) for Vista after all and it’s already been released. Windows Server 2008 isn’t easy to configure as a desktop operating system but when done correctly can be 20% faster than Vista while retaining most of the same features.

Windows Workstation 2008 is not a product sold by Microsoft and must be configured from a copy of Windows Server 2008. It seems this version of Windows lacks the “bloat” that is part of Vista. However, I am not sure what the author is referring to (but is likely talking about unnecessary services). Of course this version of Windows was designed with developers in mind who covet speed above all else. Workstation 2008 includes IIS and Hyper-V for creating virtual machines.

A Microsoft employee and third party website have created tutorials on how to use Windows Server 2008 as a desktop operating system. This is what I’ve been referring to as Windows Workstation 2008. Keep in mind that this will have the same driver problems as Vista does, meaning, if a Vista driver doesn’t exist for a piece of hardware you still won’t be able to use it with Server or Workstation 2008.

Transform Windows Server 2008 to a Workstation

Emmanuel Bergerat: Few days ago I changed my professional notebook/laptop for a real working machine. Working on advanced MOSS 2007 projects, setting up directly MOSS on my host OS is nice, so did I.

Windows Server 2008 Standard RC1 EN, bytes from MSDN, looks like the best candidate for this.

Once setup (its Vista like setup screens), the OS runs smoothly, and working pleasure is here.

But, Windows Server 2008 is hardened compared to Windows Server 2003 R2 on security. Everything is here, but you need to dig in the OS to have them...

Windows "Workstation" 2008 Clobbers Vista in Benchmark Testing

Randall Kennedy: Just when you think you've got it all figured out, along comes another curve ball to keep you guessing. This time around it's a set of new benchmark test results from our old friends at the exo.performance.network. Apparently, these guys heard about the brouhaha surrounding some Microsoft's engineer's blog post about using Server 2008 as a "Super Workstation OS" and decided to put the concept to the test. They loaded each OS onto identical hardware, tweaking the Server implementation to make it look and act like Vista. Then they tested them under a variety of productivity and multitasking scenarios.

The net result: Windows "Workstation" 2008 (i.e the tweaked Server 2008 installation) trashed Windows Vista with Service Pack 1, outscoring its desktop sibling by as much as 17%.

You can read all the gory details over at the exo.blog site. Suffice to say that there's a new option for power users who are fed-up with Vista's sluggishness: Windows Server 2008, or as I'm now calling it, "Windows NT 6.1 Workstation."

Enabling Bluetooth on Windows Server 2008

Robert McLaws: It really bugs me sometimes that Microsoft imposes artificial limitations on Windows versions because they think features are out of scope. Case in point is Windows Server 2008. Now, there is no earthly reason why WS2008 cant support Bluetooth right out of the box. An yet, because someone on the Server team decided that servers dont use Bluetooth, if youre one of the thousands of people who use WS2008 as a workstation, youre SOL. Think just installing your Bluetooth drivers, or enabling the Wireless LAN Services feature will do it? Think again.

Gil Kirkpatrick posted a solution a couple of weeks ago, and it works like a charm. It involves modifying the INF files from the default WS2008 installation to install the Microsoft Bluetooth Stack on WS2008.

Microsoft: Windows Server 2008 Not Delayed

Speculation has been growing in the media that Windows Server 2008, formerly codenamed "Longhorn," could be delayed past its release to manufacturing (RTM) date of the second half of 2007, and slip into 2008. Microsoft, on its Windows Server Division blog today, says "it just ain't so."

The very brief note reads in full: "Today we noticed a couple articles which have incorrectly speculated about a Windows Server 2008 delay. Actually, we remain fully on track for Windows Server 2008's release to manufacturing in the second half of 2007, with general availability following after that as usual."

Microsoft has given no more specific timetable for the new OS's release, but the name gives a hint that it will be released late in 2007 at the earliest. Windows Server 2008 is currently in beta 3 release, and is feature complete, according to Microsoft. ..

Windows Server 2008 R2 beta airs

Lost in the Windows 7 hype, Microsoft also released the beta of Windows Server 2008 R2, which is the companion to the client OS. The company is aligning Windows Server 2008 R2, which briefly was referred to as Windows Server 7, and the client OS Windows 7 although Microsoft officials have not said if they will ship together. But users who adopt both will get new security, network, and other features although some of those will require network upgrades like implementing IPv6. The R2 beta's integration with Windows 7 is high on the server's feature list.

2,600 sites running Windows Server 2008 on the Internet

Microsoft has recently switched its main website, www.microsoft.com to Windows Server 2008 and Microsoft-IIS/7.0

Although Windows Server 2008 is not yet released, Beta 3 is publicly available for early adopters to use. Internet Information Server 7 is already released, but will probably not see widespread use until Windows Server 2008 (formerly "Longhorn") is released, since it only runs on Windows Server 2008 or Windows Vista.

There are already around 2,600 sites running Windows Server 2008 on the Internet. Whilst some of the servers running Windows Server 2008 are at Microsoft itself, the majority are not, with developers and hosting companies taking advantage of Windows Server 2008's availability under a Go Live license which allows the beta to be used for testing or in a live environment without cost...
