Windows Server 2008 R2 showed its pretty face at the Professional Developers Conference today, here in Los Angeles. Hi there, my names Oliver Rist and Im a new technical product manager on the Windows Server team. Im down here in La-La Land heaving great sighs of satisfaction as we unveil the first sneak peeks of pre-beta Windows Server 2008 R2. Though this release is right in line with our announced roadmap strategy for future Server releases, there are several items of note with R2:



First and foremost, 32-bit is done. History. Archives. Windows Server 2008 R2 is the first Windows OS platform to go 64-bit only, and frankly it was high time. Customers have been unable to purchase a 32-bit server CPU for over two years now, and the advancements in CPU architectures really dictated that we squeeze as much performance out of customers hardware purchases as possible. The move to 64-bit is a first step.

Windows Server 2008 R2 RTM and general Availability

You may have seen some of the recent news articles that have started to roll out around the RTM and General availability dates of Windows 7. As Windows Server 2008 R2 is a joint development effort with Windows 7 we are aligned with the same RTM and General Availability (GA) dates.



With that “ Windows Server 2008 R2 RTM code is on track to be available to our partners sometime in the 2nd half of July. Windows Server 2008 R2 will also be broadly available about the same time as the Windows 7 GA date of Oct 22.

Microsoft starts rolling out final Windows Server 2008 R2 bits

As promised, Microsoft has made the final Windows Server 2008 R2 bits available on August 14 for download by Microsoft Developer Network (MSDN) and TechNet subscribers.



Microsoft released the final Windows Server 2008 R2 bits to manufacturing at the end of July, the same day the company RTM’d Windows 7. OEMs got the server-side complement to Windows 7 on July 29.



Microsoft posted the final Windows Server 2008 R2 code to MSDN and TechNet around 1 p.m. ET on Friday. The English, French, German, Japanese, Italian and Spanish versions are slated to be live today, with remaining languages going live on August 21.

As previously reported by WinBETA and other sources, microsoft has finally released Virtual Server 2005 R2 as a free download.

The most important aspect of this move is that now GNU/Linux guest OS are fully supported, with the extensions available as a free download too.

Most importantly, technical product support model for Linux guest operating systems running on Virtual Server 2005 R2 is available.

Customers who deploy supported guest operating systems in Virtual Server 2005 R2 can get product support through their normal Virtual Server 2005 R2 support channels. The Virtual Machine Additions for Linux will also be supported through the same channels.
