Microsoft's new operating system won't be out until late 2006, but here's a look at some of the new security features expected.
It seems that every time I sit down with Microsoft to discuss Windows Vista, something has been changed or added, which is good. In some cases, something has been removed, which is bad. One and a half years from launch, I understand that beta code changes frequently. Here's my standard disclaimer: the following article is based on the last build from Microsoft, Windows Vista build 5219, released September 2005.

16.12.2008Sundance Strikes iTunes Film Deal
It turns out Apple is not only
interested in movies and TV
shows but film festivals as
well; take the Sundance Film
Festival as an example.
Festival films, 33 of 71 to be
exact, will be sold through
the iTunes store for $1.99
(1) beginning January 22. The
festival, which takes place in
Park City, Utah and debuts
January 18, will also stream
the films on their web site
for three months, free of
charge. Filmmakers will get
the bulk of the download
price, while Apple, the
Sundance Institute and cable
television's Sundance Channel
will split the remainder. Mr
Cooper said a few more films
will be shown just on the
website but full-length
festival films will not be
offered.
"Streaming on our site is
not the same as owning, and
there seems to be a world out
there for both. What Sundance
is really known for is as a
platform for people to sell
their films, and that's
mainly the feature film. We
didn't want to really
interfere with that yet,"
said John Cooper of the
Sundance Institute.

16.07.2009Mozilla develops browser security metrics
Mozilla is piloting a project designed to develop a better model for the security of Firefox, by tracking a whole series of metrics over time.
Instead of simply recording the number of patches issued in a year the scheme also aims to gauge the relative risk to users over
time and the effectiveness of Mozilla's developers in trying to develop a more secure browser.
The approach will allow Mozilla
to develop a baseline model for the security of its browser that measures factors such as how long users are exposed to bugs (the so-called window of
vulnerability). This model will be refined over time, a
post on Mozilla's security blog explains.

14.08.2005Cyberattacks outstripping defences
Cyberattacks today have become so complex that there may be no real way to completely protect against them, internet security researchers have
warned.
Speaking to the media in Kuala Lumpur at this week's
Hack in the Box Security Conference, Lance Spitzner, president of the Honeynet Project, said malicious software writers have
been producing sophisticated codes, motivated mainly by the prospect of making millions of dollars from their exploits.
"The
techniques used by criminal hackers are changing so rapidly now that it's difficult to keep up with them," Spitzner said. "In the end, it's all
about returns on investment
because, by changing their attacks, there is so much more money to make."
An
organisation dedicated to improving the security of the internet, the Honeynet Project employs a network of "honeypots", internet-attached servers
that behave as decoys to lure potential hackers in order to study their techniques and monitor malicious activities. ..

Organizing the Windows 7 Project
Jon DeVaan: Steven wrote about how we organize the engineering team on Windows which is a very important element of how work is done. Another
important part is how we organize the engineering project itself.
Id like to start with a couple of quick notes. First is that
Steven reads and writes about ten times faster than I do, so dont be too surprised if you see about that distribution of words between the two of us
here. (Be assured that between us I am the deep thinker :-). Or maybe I am just jealous.) Second is that we want do want to keep sharing the how we
build Windows 7 topics since that gives us a shared context for when we dive into feature discussion as we get closer to the PDC and WinHEC. We want
to discuss how we are engineering Windows 7 including the lessons learned from Longhorn/Vista. All of these realities go into our decision making on
Windows 7.
OK, on to the tawdry bits.

10 Warning Signs of Project Failure
Unless you are in a mature industry such as banking or insurance, where information is the life-blood of what you do, chances are you will be familiar
with at least some of these 10 project management failings put together by Robert Francis Group analyst Mimi Ho.
"One, they're
right on the button and two, if you take a look at the large majority of them, it all has to do with project planning and early stages of analysis
that companies like to jump over," said Jeff Monteforte, owner of Exential, an independent project management consultancy in Cleveland, Ohio.
In other words, when IT projects fail it rarely is a result of the technology. At its core, project management is all about people.
