Mobile Firefox Enters Testing Next Week

By this time next week, Mozilla will have unveiled the alpha release of its mobile Firefox browser, codenamed Fennec. But not too many people will be able to make use of it initially: the code will only be available for Nokia's N810 Internet Tablet. The alpha code is aimed at Mozilla community members, specifically to give the innovative touch user interface and the feature set a grueling workout, says Jay Sullivan, Mozilla vice president of mobile.

A release for Windows mobile is in the works, to be released "in the next few months," according to Sullivan. One possible interim option is a version to run on Windows PCs, in effect acting as an emulator.

The partnership with the Wolfram Alpha, the brainchild of British-born physicist Stephen Wolfram, will initially be rolled out in the US only. The "computational knowledge engine" answers many questions on the fly by retrieving and processing raw data from databases.

First impressions: Opera 9.5 alpha a worthy contender

Opera has always defied conventional wisdom: in the past, the company was able to survive by selling web browsers when Microsoft and Netscape were giving them away. More recently, the company shifted to giving away its desktop browser, pulling revenue from sales in the mobile arena and affiliate deals integrated into the browser. The company has proven to be rugged and focused on quality.

Now, the company has released alpha builds of the latest version of their desktop product, Opera 9.5 (code-named Kestrel). While it doesn't quite add enough features to justify a full version number bump, it is a welcome update for any Opera fan and may well get users of more popular browsers to take a second look. Despite being an "alpha" release, we've found a solid improvement to an already very strong browser.

Windows Mobile 6.5 to officially launch on May 11

It seems like Windows Mobile 6.5 will be out before we know it. Microsoft previously said that they don't expect it until later in the year, but it seems they are ahead of schedule. A blog post on the Windows Mobile Team blog confirms that the 6.5 update will officially launch on May 11.

May 11 is also the first say of the Tech Ed Conference, so maybe we will see a final demo of it there. The last demo we saw of it was described as an alpha, so the gold version should be a real step forward.

Don't be too quick to update though, Microsoft decided to add extra requirements to the new update like requiring a start menu key, and others to be dedicated to the operating system. Manufacturers are also not expected to update most devices that are already out, and instead just new decides that roll out.
