WebSlices Hit the Desktop

Sarah Perez: I just saw a post this morning about Sean Lyndersay's new Sidebar gadget called the "WebSlice Viewer Gadget." This brilliant little creation brings IE8's WebSlices (bits of web content that you can access from the new IE8 Favorites Bar) right to your desktop via a simple Vista Sidebar gadget.

The gadget, currently in alpha (you've been warned!), requires Vista (unknown if x64 supported, but let us know), IE8, and a web page that has some WebSlices. Each instance of the WebSlice Viewer shows only one WebSlice, so you will need to open multiple gadgets to show multiple views.>

Outlook 2007 Gadgets for Windows Sidebar

If you’re a fan of the Outlook 2007 To-Do Bar, but wish your upcoming appointments and tasks could be shown even when Outlook was minimized, I’ve got great news for you, you can do this today with the Outlook Sidebar Gadgets.

One of the new features introduced in Windows Vista is the Windows Sidebar, an application that allows gadgets—small applications that provide quick access to useful information or commands—to be displayed on your desktop or in the Sidebar.

The Sidebar presented a great opportunity for Outlook to surface the same information that we show in the To-Do Bar. To this end, we developed two Outlook gadgets: Outlook Appointments and Outlook Tasks. These gadgets can be used independently or together to provide at-a-glance information without the need to bring up Outlook.

Maximizing Sidebar Gadgets

Many PC OEMs ship Windows Vista computers with Windows Sidebar enabled, usually only displaying the simple clock, photos and RSS feed gadgets. You may've found that they install their own home-grown gadgets to show off additional features or apps installed on the PC, or as sales tools for other products. You may even have turned off the Sidebar because you already have a clock in the systray and you use other ways to check RSS feeds.

If so, you're missing out, as there's a Windows Sidebar gadget for almost anything you might want: PC utilities, music, messaging, traffic reporting, searching or just a quick game can be yours with a click of the mouse. If you haven't taken the time to explore gadgets beyond those loaded by default, take a minute to right-click the Sidebar and select 'Add Gadgets.' From there, click 'Get More Gadgets Online' -- youll find over 1000 different gadgets available for download.

There are still other ways to find gadgets: visit the Microsoft Gadgets Gallery, Windows Live Gallery and Code Project for hundreds more. In addition, you'll find links to resources for developers and a way to submit your own gadgets for others to use.

Windows Vista CTP to Feature Sidebar, Gadgets

A February CTP (Community Technology Preview) of Microsoft's planned Windows Vista OS will feature Windows Sidebar and Gadgets technology, for adding mini-applications such as video or audio feeds to the Windows desktop. Gadgets providing access to these applications are represented by desktop icons.

These icons are then organized on the scrollable Sidebar on the screen, Microsoft officials said at the combined Software Architecture Summit and Middleware Summit conferences on Wednesday.

Windows Vista Build 5487 Screenshots Released

Wednesday Winfuture.de, a German Windows enthusiast site, released a slew of screenshots of the recently aquired 5487 build of Windows vista.

It appears that the new task bar and sidebar have still yet to have been included, but you will notice a few changes here and there. The welcome screen appears to have been overhauled with many new features adding an "Offers from Microsoft" panel which gives quick access to many new Windows Live services such as Messenger, Mail Center (still currently known as Mail Desktop Beta) and OneCare.

Another thing you will spot is a slightly tuned interface in Media Center, nothing big as it appears they just tweaked the drop shadows and a few graphics.

Although the new sidebar didn't make an appearance in this build, some redesigned gadgets did. The system performance and weather gadget have been redesigned as well as the stocks gadget.

Last but not least is the new voice recognition feature (or after a bad performance at a Microsoft Conference last week, voice wreck-ognition may be a more appropriate term.) Voice recognition allows you to control the system and take notes by using audio commands which the system recognizes.
