HD DVD and Blu-ray coming to Santa Rosa IGP

In the second half of 2007, Intel's recently-launched Santa Rosa platform will get a next-generation DVD playback option, according to Intel mobile graphics spokesperson Mike Choi. Intel will use a third-party hardware decoder to bring HD DVD and Blu-ray support to versions of Santa Rosa with integrated graphics processors (IGPs).

Intel's decision to use a dedicated decoder chip will let the company keep costs down. Instead of relying on a more expensive discrete GPU to do the decoding, Intel can ship next-generation DVD support with its IGP products.

When next-generation DVD playback finally arives, the Intel graphics solution will be optimized for Vista. Currently, Vista loses some of the Aero effects during HD playback on some non-Intel systems, but Intel's optimizations will let users have the full Aero experience simultaneous with HD-DVD or Blu-Ray. ..

Hacking a Media Center DVD Library

Max Zuckerman: If you're like me, one of the inputs on your TV is your desktop or laptop computer. It's one of the best ways to surf the web or share pictures and videos with others.

But my favorite feature, hands down, is the ability to have my entire DVD collection available to me in a very intuitive and slick-looking interface all on my TV. The best part is I don't have to physically insert a DVD every time I want to watch one. I can just browse my collection very easily all on my TV/monitor and hit "play!"

See how I set this all up in my tutorial on Channel 8.

Windows 7: Build 7057 blocks third-party video codecs

The latest beta of Windows 7 blocks the usage of third party video decoders from Windows Media Player and MCE. Albain, a DirectShow (ffdshow) developer explains in his own words what he encountered when he was testing the multimedia pipeline of Windows 7 in the latest build 7057. "Microsoft has locked mpeg4 and h264 codecs into Media Foundation, the replacer of DirectShow (even if directshow is still supported). There is no way to override those codecs, even if you develop a Media Foundation version of your decoder, because Microsoft maintains a list of preferred codecs (their codecs) into the registry (HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT and HKLM \MediaFoundation\Transforms\Preferred), and this registry key cannot be modified, even in admin mode.

Hybrid HD-DVD media plays on standard DVD player

Toshiba and Memory-Tech have developed a HD-DVD disc that will play on a conventional DVD player. It's a dual-layer disc that can store 15GB of high-resolution HD-DVD data on one layer and 4.7GB of standard DVD data on the other, and which doesn't cost any more to produce.

In theory, movies purchased for your DVD player might soon have a HD-DVD copy on another, essentially hidden, layer. The key to this will obviously be linked to how quickly this product can come to market and whether or not it truly will not affect the media production cost.

This may be of little value to early adopters but late adopters will surely be tempted to purchase HD-DVD players over Blu-Ray players if they already own a compatible library of high-resolution movies. After all, why repurchase what you already own?

This could be a rather large score for the HD-DVD format which already enjoys a significant sales lead over their Blu-Ray rivals. Mind you, that sales lead could evaporate quickly with the release of the PlayStation 3 in Japan and the imminent release of the PlayStation 3 in North America.

Xbox 360's HD-DVD uses 4.7 million lines of code

As a result of the complexities of decoding HD DVD audio and video content, as well as providing a user interface and DRM, over 4.7 million lines of code went into the HD DVD software. The external HD-DVD drive can play H.264, MPEG2 and VC1 videos. There is no hardware HD DVD decoder chip set on board the Xbox 360. As a result, the HD DVD subsystem is almost entirely written in software. It's one of the most demanding applications written for the 360 to date, using up all six of the system's hardware threads.

Shaheen Gandhi, an Xbox 360 engineer, said: "At the moment, the player software pushes Xbox 360 harder than any other (save, perhaps, Gears of War during some particularly busy parts of the game)."

LG adds features to dual high-def DVD player

South Korea's LG Electronics introduced on Wednesday an updated version of its high-definition DVD player that supports both Blu-ray and HD DVD.

But at about $1,000, the BH200 "Super Blu Player"--while 16 percent less than the model LG unveiled in January--costs twice as much as standalone Blu-ray or HD DVD players.

That earlier model shown at the Consumer Electronics Show was the first to combine Sony's Blu-ray standard and Toshiba's HD DVD. The goal is to satisfy high-end customers frustrated by the format war that has divided consumers, electronics makers and movie studios and angered retailers.

Samsung Electronics is expected to market a dual format player later this year, ahead of the holiday-shopping season...
