First Looks at Windows Vista Media Center
Microsoft's Media Center Edition of Windows XP has had a hard time. Though it's hard to call it a poor seller, MCE certainly has a market penetration that represents only a tiny fraction of the many millions of computers running Windows XP. And why should it? Most users don't have nice hi-def TVs hooked up to their PCs, or TV tuners, or really any need to enjoy their music, video, and TV stored on their PC via a 10-foot user interface. It doesn't help that the first edition of Media Center wasn't very good, either. Then again, Microsoft bounced back with its second effort, Media Center Edition 2005, one of the most improved software products ever.

19.12.2008Introducing Windows Live Solution Center
The Windows Live Team is at it again. Following the major release of the Windows Live Essentials release 3 days ago, the team has released Windows
Live Solution Center. The name is quite a cache though. Most would assume that the website would provide solutions for users using all of the Windows
Live products and services. However, the main focus of the new solution center at the moment is Windows Live Hotmail. The Windows Live team has stated
that more services will be covered in the new solution center at a later date, but that doesn't mean you absolutely cannot ask for help with other
Windows Live products and services.

17.11.2007Mail Desktop to become Mail
Center
Unsurprisingly given
yesterday's announcement that
the Windows Live Search client
will be called Windows Live
Search Center, Mail Desktop is
to follow suit and become
Windows Live Mail Center.
Ignoring the
fact that the spelling is
americanised and will
doubtlessly annoy millions of
non-US users, the name
doesn't describe the function
of the product nearly as well
as those of Search Center and
Safety Center, despite their
blandness. Maybe keeping users
unaware of the new RSS
integration is a blessing in
disguise though; much like
Live.com some serious work
needs to be done turning these
products into usable rss
aggregators.

13.07.2006Where Media Center meets Windows Live?
Microsoft is apparently
working on Codename Nemo, an
add-on for Windows Vista's
Media Center component, which
will offer an all-in-one UI to
access some Windows Live and
MSN services. The add-on is
currently planned to offer, in
its debuts, Windows Live
Messenger, Windows Live Spaces
and Windows Live Call access
in its debuts, though this
might expand as time goes to
add MSN services or upcoming
Windows Live ones, such as MSN
Soapbox.
The
project has been showed off at
MGX 2006, and although it
appears to be on hold for now,
a beta release is expected
before the end of 2006.

The upcoming desktop search

the second online

surprisingly doesn't
integrate it, after MSN

this week.
From
now on, the long-awaited

28.06.2007Microsoft Shatters the PC-to-Television Barrier
Watching a live TV broadcast in the living room, pausing it, and then effortlessly resuming it at the same moment from the bedroom or kitchen will
soon become even easier, as Microsoft Corp. provides a first look at the new Extenders for Windows Media Center platform, which will power a variety
of devices to be released this holiday season. A wave of new cool, quiet, home-theater-quality devices from companies such as Linksys, a division of
Cisco Systems Inc.; D-Link Corporation; and Niveus Media Inc. may incorporate new features, including live high-definition (HD) video, wireless
networking and expanded support for audio and video formats such as DivX and Xvid.
The new Extender devices, which will be
unveiled later this month in a variety of innovative form factors and price points, unleash the pictures, music, video content and live TV from a PC
running Windows Vista® Home Premium or Windows Vista Ultimate for viewing and listening on a big-screen TV display for the ultimate entertainment
solution.
With more than 60 million Windows Vista Media Center PCs in use worldwide, there are many customers eager to bring the
simple and elegant Media Center experience to the televisions in their homes, said Dave Alles, general manager for eHome at Microsoft. The new
Extenders for Windows Media Center make it easy to get a wide range of personal and Internet content not only on someones main TV but on all the TVs
in the house. Whether its a high-def show recorded from digital cable, new Internet video, or your personal library of pictures, music and videos, its

06.09.2007Windows Live for TV Entering Beta Soon
A few months ago, a
media-center like application
that integrates Windows Live
products had been announced,
though we never had a sign of
life from the project since
then until now. Today,
Microsoft is surprisingly
ready to send "Codename
Nemo", as it was called, in
beta stage under the name
Windows Live for TV.
The product will be sent
by mail during its beta
process, within United States
only, and you need to be
running Windows Vista Home
Premium or Ultimate to be able
to run it.
Windows Live for TV lets you
view Windows Live Spaces using
a 3D view and use Windows Live
Messenger and all of its
features in a nice, simplistic
Windows Live styled media
center interface. You can also
use a media center remote
control to navigate through
the interface.

03.01.2007Microsoft integrates Windows
Live into Vista
Microsoft-Watch reports that
newer Windows Vista builds,
5506 and up, include
references to Windows Live
software by default in various
locations throughout the OS.
It is unknown yet if the
concerned products are
installed with Vista or if it
only contains download links
to it.
The
Welcome Center in Vista is the
place where most references
are found. In build 5506, it
contains icons for Windows
Live Messenger, Windows Live
OneCare, Windows Live Toolbar
and Windows Live Desktop Mail.
Additionnally, the Start Menu
apparently contains a Windows
Live Messenger icon.
Though this is only
speculation, this may mean
that Microsoft is finally
removing Windows Messenger
from its Windows products,
using instead Windows Live
Messenger.

14.09.2007Microsoft quietly shuts down Windows Live Help Community too
Microsoft has silently removed the
Windows Live Help Community service and the link
now redirects to Windows Live Help. This is one of the many Windows Live services being dropped in recent times. And Like Windows Live for TV, Help
Community never made it out of beta.
For those of you who don't remember, Microsoft released Windows Live Help Community back in
December 2006, providing another channel for users to get help for their Windows Live services. However, throughout the lifetime of the service, only
three services ever utilized Help Community - that is Windows Live Admin Center, Windows Live Call for Free, and Help Community itself.
As
noted back then on LiveSide, there seems to be too many help and feedback channels for Windows Live services, including:
Windows Live Account -
Help Central
Windows Live Account - Feedback
Live Search QnA
Windows Live Help Community (now removed)
Windows Live Message
Boards
Windows Live public newsgroups
Seems like Microsoft is finally getting their hands on to clean up the mess they've
created with Windows Live and Live Search.

Passport With a Face
Microsoft still has yet to

its Windows Live Identity
service. But company execs are
sharing more details about how
Windows Live ID will be

up as the online

solution for its growing

back in 2004, Passport was
well on its way to becoming a
Microsoft-centric entity, with
third party partners
abandoning Passport, left and
