Windows Live Hotmail wave 3 rollout begins

As we reported on last week, Microsoft has been prepping a big refresh for Windows Live Hotmail users. Starting this week, users should begin noticing changes to their interface. Due to the huge user base and multiple servers that power Hotmail, not all users will get the new interface at once.

Over on the Windows Live Wire, Microsoft has further outlined some of those changes. Along with an improved look, one that merges some of the fast loading features of the "classic" interface along with the enhanced features of the last version, Microsoft claims that the new interface is up to 70% faster than the previous version.

Live Calendar has also been improved, including enhanced calendar sharing and iCal subscriptions to public calendars. Calendar also now syncs with the Windows Live Mail beta and Microsoft Outlook when using the Outlook Connector addin. Also included are to-do lists that allow you to manage both personal and shared tasks between contacts.

Windows Live Mail Desktop Beta Refresh

Earlier today, the Windows Live Desktop Beta team rolled out another refresh of WLMD. If you have not seen it yet, prepare to be shocked.

Build 932 offers huge changes from previous builds. The aspect of WLMD that people complained the most about was the UI, well not anymore. The user interface has been completely overhauled with a new glass like "Vistaish" design, which looks absolutely incredible.

But that's not all. Also included in this build is a new configuration wizard which allows users to easily import contacts and settings from Outlook Express and Windows.

And performance, build 932 offers huge improvements to the sign in time and to the amount of time it takes to synchronize your mail.

The only thing that has not appeared in this build is the new re-branding of Windows Live Mail Desktop Beta to Windows Live Mail Center. This will most likely not appear until the final stages of the beta.

jcxp.net - 10.08.2006

Windows Live Mail Desktop Update Available

Microsoft seems to have finally waken up with its Windows Live set of services: after months of incredible inactivity, the products offered in the Windows Live family have seen a whole lot of updates recently. After the beta refresh for Family Safety and a new Windows Live Messenger 8.1 build, it's Windows Live Mail Desktop's turn to step to another milestone.

The new version of the mail client, numbered as build 1223, appears to be mostly a "bug fixes update", except for a completely revamped login screen. Further changes are still unknown at this time since the product team has not yet released a changelog.

If you are looking into filing bugs concerning Windows Live Mail Desktop, it is recommended by the developers that you use the recently created Microsoft Connect public beta program to do so instead of the Windows Live website because of the added flexibility it offers.

Thanks to VistaReloaded for the heads up!

Microsoft releases Windows Vista SP1 RC Refresh 2

The Windows team stepped up a gear and have released SP1 RC (Release Candidate) Refresh 2 today. In the past this probably would of been called RC3.

Microsoft said this release would reach just 15,000 official beta testers who can download it through Windows Update or as a stand alone file. As with previous builds, the Service Pack requires an RTM version of Vista without earlier SP1 updates applied.

Service Pack 1 is expected to be made available in the middle of next month.

Microsoft preps Live Hotmail refresh

Microsoft has been doing a lot this week to help boost the image of the future for their Live services, along with the recently released "wave 3" of Windows Live utilities, Microsoft has sent an email out to their Live Hotmail subscribers outlining some of the changes they have planned to give a boost to the service.

Based on customer feedback, Microsoft has focused on making the next version of Live Hotmail faster, in fact they claim the next version will be nearly 70% faster when signing in, opening and viewing messages when used with a broadband connection and up to 56% faster on slower connections.

To add a new twist to the ever increasing storage-size war between Microsoft, Google and Yahoo... Microsoft has upped the ante by planning to introduce a storage system that "will grow with you" -- while not mentioning specifics, they claim that as you need more storage for your messages, you'll get it and while there will be a limit it will be "so large that chances are you won't even come close to them."

Other new features include the ability to IM directly from the Hotmail interface, improvements to the calendaring system and a revamped UI. Rumor has it that the UI will attempt to merge some of the innovations of the latest version with the more familiar, simpler, Hotmail that layout users were used to before the last upgrade.
