RIM's "critical severity outage" affects BlackBerry users

A major outage hit BlackBerry users in North America on Monday afternoon, cutting off wireless e-mail for everyone. The problem, which BlackBerry owner Research In Motion described as a "critical severity outage" affecting users in the Americas, once again raised concerns about the stability of the e-mail service 10 months after a widespread crash last April.

RIM notified its clients of the outage in an e-mail.

Chrome masks as Safari to fool Windows Live Mail

According to Google's Chrome Releases blog, Chrome-users no longer need to go out of their way to make Windows Live Mail/Hotmail work. In addition to providing important security updates, Google's most recent version of Chrome--1.0.154.46--makes it easy for followers to use Windows Live Mail. For some reason, Windows Live Mail does not work properly on Chrome, unless it thinks it is some other browser, such as Apple's Safari. Previously, Chrome-users who had wanted to be able to use Windows Live Mail would have to switch the user-agent manually, but now the browser will identify itself properly as "Chrome" for most normal sites but as "Safari" for URLs ending with mail.live.com.

The Future of Windows Live Mail Desktop

There hasn't been much news on Windows Live Mail desktop since 2006, with a minor update being released in February. With most Windows Live watchers expecting a v1 release at the beginning of the year, many are wondering what is happening to the product. Dare Obasanjo even joked at a rename to Outlook Express Live.

It seems to be that Microsoft is rethinking its mail client strategy, with the belief that two distinct free mail clients for Windows Vista (Windows Mail and Windows Live Mail desktop) is not the way to move forward.

Instead, Mail desktop will evolve to become an enhanced Windows Mail client, which when installed will replace Vista's Windows Mail. For those familiar with Mail desktop there will not be a huge change however for those using Windows Mail they will benefit from the integration of Live services.

While the name and details of the new product are unconfirmed, hopefully we should soon see a beta of Windows Live Mail for Vista.

Windows Live Mail sign-in UI Updated

The sign-in site for Windows Live Mail has been updated to the new Live ID interface.

As Trevin stated on his blog, in order to see the new interface, you must be a Live Mail user and sign in through mail.live.com instead of hotmail.com. This sign-in site is also compatible with the Windows Live Sign-in Assistant.

Also, I just found out that @live.com e-mail addresses are coming. If you go to ideas.live.com, and scroll down to Windows Live Mail Desktop Beta, click Get Updates, and it mentions on the following page, "You'll need an MSN, MSN Hotmail, Live.com e-mail address to use this service."
