Windows Live Essentials Beta Released

Microsoft finally released today a beta version of its Windows Live Essentials service to all beta-testers that subscribed to the beta program.

The point of Windows Live Essentials is quite simple: provide a simple way for users to use the most important Windows Live Services: Windows Live Messenger, Windows Live Mail desktop, Windows Live Mail, Windows Live Spaces and Windows Live Dashboard being the included products as of yet.

The website is only available to people using Internet Explorer 6, so nothing has changed yet on compatibility since the preview, though it is said that each release will bring improvements to operating system, language and web browser support.

Windows Live Essentials Preview

Only some time after LiveSide posted screenshots of the upcoming Windows Live Essentials product, Microsoft is previewing it in its internal Windows Live website, live-int.com.

Unfortunately, the website can only be seen using Internet Explorer 6, version 7 and all other browsers being unsupported at this point. As opposite to usual internal Windows Live sites, a download link to its parent product, Windows Live Dashboard, is apparently already available.

Apparently, the site is often down, so if it doesn't load when you're trying to visit, try again later on...

Introducing Windows Live Solution Center

The Windows Live Team is at it again. Following the major release of the Windows Live Essentials release 3 days ago, the team has released Windows Live Solution Center. The name is quite a cache though. Most would assume that the website would provide solutions for users using all of the Windows Live products and services. However, the main focus of the new solution center at the moment is Windows Live Hotmail. The Windows Live team has stated that more services will be covered in the new solution center at a later date, but that doesn't mean you absolutely cannot ask for help with other Windows Live products and services.

Windows 7 to have just download links for Windows Live apps

Since September we've known that Windows Live would be replacing some built-in Windows applications with the release of Windows 7. At PDC, we got further details: Microsoft is making this move in order to eliminate confusion between having similar applications (Windows Mail and Windows Live Mail for example), to avoid any potential lawsuits for stunting competition, and to be able to release and update these programs without having to tie their timelines to the operating system. The Windows Live applications, Family Safety, Mail, Messenger, Movie Maker, Photo Gallery, Toolbar, Writer, as well as Microsoft Office Outlook Connector, will be bundled under the moniker "Windows Live Essentials."

Pirating Windows? No free Security Essentials for you!

Microsoft has confirmed via its Genuine Windows Blog that only those Windows users running genuine, validated copies will be able to download and install the new Microsoft Security Essentials software. The Director of Microsoft's Genuine Windows team, Alex Kochis, stated in his post that, "During installation, you'll be asked to validate Windows running on your PC to make sure that it's genuine." Windows validation is by no means a new technology, and has been implemented in many of Microsoft's software packages with a few notable exceptions: Internet Explorer 8, for example, and Windows Update which allows users running pirated copies of Windows to download essential security patches without validation.

Windows Live Wave 3 Essentials Released

Thanks to m&# for point this out to us...

Microsoft has just made the updated release candidate of the Windows Live Suite wave 3 at download.live.com.

There is no beta tag anywhere on this build as it's a near final build and Messenger plus does work with this build but not all features are usable.

Overall the UI has been enhanced in most areas with minor changes. The main improvements are the integration to Windows 7 and jump lists.

The sign in for Windows Live Messenger has changed slightly but nothing big.

AV-Test Deems Windows Security Essentials "Very Good"

Microsoft's new free security software, Windows Security Essentials, passed a preliminary antivirus exam with flying colors, said independent and trusted firm AV-Test, which tested Essentials, launched yesterday in beta, on Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7. It put it up against nearly 3,200 common viruses, bot Trojans and worms, said Andreas Marx, one of the firm's managers. The malware was culled from the most recent WildList, a list of threats actually actively attacking computers. 'All files were properly detected and treated by the product,' Marx said in an e-mail. 'That's good, as several other scanners are still not able to detect and kill all of these critters yet.' It also tested well on false positives.
