As we reported a few weeks ago, Microsoft has officially rolled out an update to Windows Live Essentials (Build 8064). If you're not familiar with
Windows Live Essentials, it is a suite of applications that include: Windows Live Mail (Desktop Version), Windows Live Messenger, Windows Live Photo
Gallery, Windows Live Writer, Windows Live Toolbar, Windows Live Family Safety, and Windows Live Movie Maker Beta. The updates don't appear to
have any new features, but contain lots of fixed bugs especially for Windows 7 users. Microsoft has announced that users still using Windows Live
Messenger 8.1, 8.5, and the latest 9.0 (build 1202) will be asked, not required, to update to 14.0.8064.0206.
Microsoft finally released
today a beta version of its
Windows Live Essentials
service to all beta-testers
that subscribed to the beta
program.
The
point of Windows Live
Essentials is quite simple:
provide a simple way for users
to use the most important
Windows Live Services: Windows
Live Messenger, Windows Live
Mail desktop, Windows Live
Mail, Windows Live Spaces and
Windows Live Dashboard being
the included products as of
yet.
The website
is only available to people
using Internet Explorer 6, so
nothing has changed yet on
compatibility since the
preview, though it is said
that each release will bring
improvements to operating
system, language and web
browser support.
Only some time after LiveSide
posted screenshots of the
upcoming Windows Live
Essentials product, Microsoft
is previewing it in its
internal Windows Live website,
live-int.com.
Unfortunately, the website
can only be seen using
Internet Explorer 6, version 7
and all other browsers being
unsupported at this point. As
opposite to usual internal
Windows Live sites, a download
link to its parent product,
Windows Live Dashboard, is
apparently already available.
Apparently, the
site is often down, so if it
doesn't load when you're
trying to visit, try again
later on...
Microsoft's Windows Live team today formally announced a number of upgrades to the Live platform that constitute its "next generation," a
more unified experience across all the services within Windows Live... betanews.com - 13.11.2008
Microsoft's security essentials team has confirmed the final version of Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) will be made available in the coming
weeks. MSE is Microsoft's free anti-virus and anti-spyware product that is set to replace Microsoft's paid Windows Live OneCare subscription
service which was withdrawn earlier this year. In an email to beta testers the team thanked testers for their participation and encouraged them to
upgrade to version 1.0.1500.0 of the beta to ensure a "smooth experience". Neowin exclusively revealed Security Essentials in June when it was
codenamed "morro". Morro was renamed Security Essentials and appeared in beta form in late June.
Since September
we've known that Windows Live would be replacing some built-in Windows applications with the release of Windows 7. At PDC, we got further details:
Microsoft is making this move in order to eliminate confusion between having similar applications (Windows Mail and Windows Live Mail for example), to
avoid any potential lawsuits for stunting competition, and to be able to release and update these programs without having to tie their timelines to
the operating system. The Windows Live applications, Family Safety, Mail, Messenger, Movie Maker, Photo Gallery, Toolbar, Writer, as well as Microsoft
Office Outlook Connector, will be bundled under the moniker "Windows Live Essentials."
The Windows Live Team is at it again. Following the major release of the Windows Live Essentials release 3 days ago, the team has released Windows
Live Solution Center. The name is quite a cache though. Most would assume that the website would provide solutions for users using all of the Windows
Live products and services. However, the main focus of the new solution center at the moment is Windows Live Hotmail. The Windows Live team has stated
that more services will be covered in the new solution center at a later date, but that doesn't mean you absolutely cannot ask for help with other
Windows Live products and services.
Microsoft confirmed today that they plan to release a public beta of Microsoft Security Essentials (formerly codenamed Morro) on June 23. The free
anti-virus product will begin with a beta program next week and an updated beta version over the summer period. Company officials also confirmed that
Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) will be launching in fall this year. We have learned that Microsoft is targeting September or at the latest to
have the anti-virus software available for the October 22 Windows 7 launch. Formerly known as Morro, the software giant plans to replace its Windows
Live OneCare offerings with MSE later in the year.
So far, Windows Live has meant what’s now called Windows Live Essentials, the suite of downloadable software (Live
Mail, Writer, Photo Gallery, Movie Maker) for a while now, since the Wave 3 beta opened up in September. But the desktop downloads are only half of
Windows Live, and now for the first time we’re about to get our hands on the online bits: Profile, People, Photos, Home.Live.com, and more.
Microsoft is offering it's free anti-virus product, Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) to 75,000 lucky people today. The company is offering the
product via a beta program and will likely extend the cap of 75,000 downloads depending on demand. MSE is Microsoft's free anti-virus and
anti-spyware product that is set to replace Microsoft's paid Windows Live OneCare subscription service which is being withdrawn a week today.
Earlier this month Neowin exclusively revealed MSE (codenamed Morro) and we believe that the final product will be available shortly before the
Windows 7 launch in October. MSE is being distributed on Microsoft's Connect site as a beta program.
Microsoft has confirmed via its Genuine Windows Blog that only those Windows users running genuine, validated copies will be able to download and
install the new Microsoft Security Essentials software. The Director of Microsoft's Genuine Windows team, Alex Kochis, stated in his post that,
"During installation, you'll be asked to validate Windows running on your PC to make sure that it's genuine." Windows validation is by no
means a new technology, and has been implemented in many of Microsoft's software packages with a few notable exceptions: Internet Explorer 8, for
example, and Windows Update which allows users running pirated copies of Windows to download essential security patches without validation.
Yesterday Neowin exclusively revealed Microsoft Morro to the world, today we can unveil that Microsoft's new and free Anti-Virus will be named
Microsoft Security Essentials. The software product, codenamed "Morro" after a beach in Sao Paulo, Brazil, is already being tested by Microsoft
employees and a trial version will be made available in September according to sources familiar with Microsoft's plans. Microsoft has officially
stated that Microsoft Security Essentials would be available by the end of 2009 at the latest. The company has been trialing internal versions since
June 1. Yesterday we unveiled three screen shots of an old alpha build but we can unveil an updated build today with the Microsoft Security
Essentials branding.
Finally, after a year-long development phase, Microsoft Security Essentials have been publicly released. If you can't wait to get your hands on
Microsoft's latest security software, you don't need to wait any longer. In June, a public-beta was offered, and the download limit was
reached within 24 hours. It will be absolutely free for all users Windows XP, Vista and 7, both in 32bit and 64bit flavors — as long as you have
genuine copy. Microsoft will not bundle it with Windows 7, though, when it's released on October 22nd, 2009.
The release of (Codename Peloton for those keeping track), is expected to mainly take place from 4pm PST (2nd December) onwards, and will include the
release of new services such as Windows Live Groups, Photos and Profile as well as the significantly updated Home and Mobile offerings. No this
doesn't include the release of Windows Live Essentials, the desktop applications.
Note, Hotmail and Calendar are both on a different
release schedule, and as such will remain at their Wave 3 Milestone 2 builds until a later update. So no WebMessenger integration just yet :(
All the new services are available, so check them out.

Microsoft's new free security software, Windows Security Essentials, passed a preliminary antivirus exam with flying
colors, said independent and trusted firm AV-Test, which tested Essentials, launched yesterday in beta, on Windows XP,
Vista and Windows 7. It put it up against nearly 3,200 common viruses, bot Trojans and worms, said Andreas Marx, one of the firm's managers. The
malware was culled from the most recent WildList, a list of threats actually actively attacking computers. 'All files were properly detected and
treated by the product,' Marx said in an e-mail. 'That's good, as several other scanners are still not able to detect and kill all of
these critters yet.' It also tested well on false positives.
