AMD release OpenGL ES 2.0 emulator for the PC

AMD have released an emulation environment for developers to start creating OpenGL ES 2.0 applications using the PC, before their supporting hardware in the handheld space starts to ship.

From the emulator's page on ati.amd.com/developer:

"AMDs OpenGL ES 2.0 Emulator is designed to emulate functionality that will be exposed by future mobile AMD hardware. The purpose of this emulator is to aid developers in their design of OpenGL ES 2.0 games and applications. The emulator allows developers to get a head start designing their graphics code before hardware supporting OpenGL ES 2.0 is available, and even after this hardware becomes available developing on a PC is often advantageous due to superior developer and debugging tools."

Currently the emulator only runs on Windows XP, and it requires SM2.0 hardware as a minimum for acceleration. It supports EGL 1.3, requires Visual Studio 2005 to be installed and AMD recommend the latest Catalyst driver release for best results. They haven't tested on the competitor's hardware yet.

@Live.com e-mail Addresses Information

Looks like we finally have heard some news on when @live.com e-mail addresses will be released. Jacky Mok, another Product Manager for Windows Live in Toronto, has posted some information saying when they will be released, he says will be available "in the fall", along with "a rich family of products" around the same time.

According to the blog entry on livechronicl es.spaces.live.com, there will be no migration of address names from current hotmail addresses, so if you have blank@hotmail.com, there's no guarantee you will get blank@live.cam. It's still on a first come, first served basis like every other e-mail services. Apparently country code addresses will only be available in countries outside the US, so that a Canadian will be able to get an @live.ca address, but not an @live.com one.

Windows XP SP3 Released To Small Group (Updated)

In addition to the previously reported Windows Vista SP1 drop to testers, Microsoft has just recently (few days ago) dropped a copy of Windows XP Service Pack 3 in the lap of the same small group of testers.

Coming in at less than 350MB, the service pack includes fixes for over 900 reported problems, some of which have already been resolved with post-Service Pack 2 hotfixes.

For the hardcore build string collectors, this build is tagged 5.1.2600.3180 (xpsp.070718-2058) (Thanks again C).

Given the close proximity of the two betas we guestimate both 'packs will be released simultaneously. We'll let you know if we hear of a more solid release date.
