A security consultant, Adam Boileau, based in New Zealand has released a tool that can unlock Windows computers in seconds, via a Firewire port,

With this tool, called Winlockpwn, one could "unlock locked Windows machines or login without a password
... merely by plugging in your Firewire cable and running a command".
The hack, which affects Windows XP computers but has not yet been
tested with Windows Vista, was first demonstrated, at a security conference in Sydney in 2006, but Microsoft has yet to develop a fix. But now that a
couple of years have passed and the issue has not resolved, Boileau, decided to release the tool on his website.

08.05.2007Windows recovery loophole lets hackers in
Windows Vista may be
Microsoft's most secure
operating system to date, but
researchers are still finding
some glaring loopholes for
hackers to exploit. Here is
the latest: all you need is a
Vista Install DVD to get admin
level access to a hard drive.
The loophole arises
because the Command Prompt
tool in Vista's System
Recovery Options fails to
request user name or passwords
before handing over access to
PCs running the operating
system.
The hack,
discovered by security
researcher Kimmo Rousku, only
works locally. Physical access
to a target PC is a must. Even
so, the potential for mischief
(such as deleting directories
or copying files on targeted
PCs) is enormous. Hackers
don't even necessarily need
to run a DVD. "Its easy to
create a bootable USB flash
memory that works in a similar
way," Rousku notes. ..

12.05.2008Hack turns iPhone into spy-phone
US security consultant, Rick Farrow, has used H D Moore's security testing tool,
Metasploit, to crack the iPhone, which
allows a hacker to control an iPhone remotely.
Farrow demonstrated how he gained root access to the iPhone and installed an
application that can record conversations on and near the iPhone, transforming the device into a spy tool. It also allowed him to remotely access
recently modified files, locally stored e-mails and view the iPhone's Web browsing history.
"Using a specially crafted Web page
utilising an iPhone exploit (now patched) he gained root level shell access to the phone -- which means he could do anything that the iPhone is
capable of from his laptop," explained
Jarno Niemelä, security
researcher for the security vendor, F-Secure.

22.11.2007Windows Machines with More than 4 GB of RAM Have Limited Shut-Down Options
Windows Vista computers that come equipped with more than 4 GB of system memory have limited shut-down options. Essentially, the Hibernate option is
no longer available on Vista machines that feature in excess of 4 GB of RAM. This scenario affects both the 32-bit and the 64-bit editions of Vista,
but at the same time also Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. Microsoft has confirmed that the issue is related to the large quantity of random access
memory.
"This issue occurs because hibernation is disabled on computers that
have more than 4 GB of RAM. Hibernation
requires sufficient disk space to contain the contents of the computer's memory. Performance is poor on a computer that has more than 4 GB of memory
and that has support for hibernation. Therefore, Microsoft has disabled support for hibernation on such computers," the Redmond company
revealed.

18.03.2008The hack of the year
A Swedish hacker tells how he infiltrated a global communications network used by scores of embassies over the world, using tools freely available on
the internet. In August, Swedish hacker Dan Egerstad gained access to sensitive embassy, NGO and corporate email accounts. Were they captured from the
clutches of hackers? Or were they being used by spies? Patrick Gray investigates the most sensational hack of 2007. IT WASNT supposed to be this easy.
Swedish hacker Dan Egerstad had infiltrated a global communications network carrying the often-sensitive emails of scores of embassies scattered
throughout the world. It had taken him just minutes, using tools freely available for download on the internet.
In time, Egerstad gained
access to 1000 high-value email accounts. He would later post 100 sets of sensitive email logins and passwords on the internet for criminals, spies or
just curious teenagers to use to snoop on inter-governmental, NGO and high-value corporate email. The question on everybodys lips was: how did he do
it? The answer came more than a week later and was somewhat anti-climactic. The 22-year-old Swedish security consultant had merely installed free,
open-source software - called Tor - on five computers in data centres around the globe and monitored it. Ironically, Tor is designed to prevent
intelligence agencies, corporations and computer hackers from determining the virtual - and physical - location of the people who use it.

14.11.2007DirectX 10.1 in Windows Vista SP1 - The Evolution
As Windows Vista brought to the table the exclusive DirectX 10, the first service pack for the operating system will evolve Microsofts graphics
technology to version 10.1. DirectX 10.1 is already available to over 12,000 testers via the first beta of Vista Service Pack 1, concomitantly with
the official release of Build 6001.16659. Although the testing milestones of Vista, Windows Server 2008 and Windows XP SP3 Beta, are officially
limited in terms of access, a hack is available designed to permit the download of Windows Vista SP1 Beta Build 6001.16659 straight from Microsoft,
and simultaneously test drive DirectX 10.1.
However, Vista users have to understand that DirectX 10.1, as well as DirectX 10 is a
technology intimately connected with the underlying graphics card, such as the upcoming ATI Radeon HD 3800 Series. According to an AMD whitepaper
focused on the implementation of DirectX 10.1 in the ATI Radeon HD 3800 Series, the latest application programming interface from Microsoft, manages
to "unlock the state of the art in GPU technology."

24.01.2007Police swoop on 'hacker of the year'
The Swedish hacker who perpetrated the so-called hack of the year has been arrested in a dramatic raid on his apartment, during which he was taken in

reported on this

15.11.2007New UK police powers to hack without a warrant
To the outrage of civil liberties groups and the government opposition, the UK Home Office has begun permitting police and MI5 officers to hack
("remote search") people's computers without their knowledge and without a court warrant. Information gleaned can then be shared with other
European forces, in line with a shift in EU policy. The goal, as with all such moves, is to track down terrorists, paedophiles, and cybercriminals.
One method for stealth surveillance involves installing spyware on targetted individuals' computers, normally by sending people emails with
infected attachments. This can, of course, be done from anywhere. Another method entails hacking directly into people's wifi networks from close
range.
