Sony delays 'Home' virtual world for PS3

In yet another embarrassing delay for Sony, the company is delaying the launch of its "Home" virtual world for the PlayStation 3, initially planned for later this year, until next spring.

The announcement Thursday came from Kazuo Hirai in his first major public appearance as the new chief executive of Sony Corp.'s video game business, Sony Computer Entertainment.

"We wanted to wait until we could offer what would be totally satisfying for consumers," Hirai said in a keynote speech at the Tokyo Game Show, an annual event where game machines and new software are shown.

"Home" is a real-time interactive online world much like Linden Lab's "Second Life" and other so-called "metaverse," except it's designed for PlayStation 3, Sony's newest home console.

Millions of people now enter "Second Life" on personal computers, moving avatars or computer graphics images of themselves in a virtual universe...

Windows 7 will give your laptop longer battery life

It's no surprise that Windows 7 is getting good reviews and praise as the operating system is proving itself to be a rock solid platform. It seems as the news is only getting better as Microsoft and Intel showed off how Windows 7 when paired up with Intel's new processor line will increase battery life for laptops, according to PCMag.com. The two companies worked together to help develop technologies that will allow for sustained performance while improving battery life in the next generation of Intel processors. "The dramatic leap in battery life appears tied to a technology known as Windows 7 timer coalescing, a technical term for minimizing the time in which the processor enters a high-performance, full-power state.

Microsoft responds to concerns regarding Aero and battery life

Responding to a number of recent articles claiming that Vista's new "Aero" user interface causes laptops running the new operating system to drain their battery faster, Microsoft has published its own results. The company says Aero consumes only 1% to 4% more battery life than when the feature is disabled:

Dwight Silverman, the tech reviewer at the Houston Chronicle, has written about the impact that the Aero theme has on battery life and performance (under the provocative title "http://blogs.chron.com/techb log/archives/2007/05/vista_aer o_battery_life_and_doom.html>V ista, Aero, battery life . . . and Doom" -- he's referring to the game Doom3, BTW). It's a good post and I'd like to take a minute to expand on what Dwight has written.

First off, yes, as Dwight correctly points out, the Aero theme drives the GPU harder and therefore uses more power. But in the big picture, it's really not that much more. For example, the display on most laptops will consume somewhere between 15-25% of your "power budget" when you are running on battery. ..

Reuters opens a news bureau in Second Life

Joining CNET News, Reuters has now opened a new news bureau inside Linden Lab's "parallel world" game Second Life. The story here is that Reuters will now bring their own news, photos, and video news to the game world and also an actual news page for real world readers to check the news out, which can be found here.   For those of you who have never heard of Second Life before, Second Life is a 3D, computer generated world where users buy land, create buildings, build up the land, buy clothing and other accessories, and overall live out a parallel life inside the game. On an average day, Second Life users spend about 跾,000 real world U.S. dollars in the game, and about 财 million a year. That's alot of dough, and companies including Reuters, CNET, Sony BMG, Sun Microsystems, even Toyota and Reebok and other big names from around the globe are buying into the pie. Entire conferences are held inside Second Life these days, Vivox a VoIP company is even offering "one million" free VoIP minutes inside Second Life through in-game phone booths where you can call actual phones and mobiles.
Yup, Second Life is that big these days. The Linden Lab game has around 900,000 users, and continues to grow. Users can join the marketplace, and use a USD to Linden Dollars conversion to buy property, land, clothing and other things, and even make money off transactions in the game and from other activities. There are even "adult" areas of the game, with nude clubs, casinos and other adult oriented themes. Anyone can register for free, but to get the most out of the game world, you would eventually have to spend some money for whatever. Names are also limited for free users, and pay users, including these big companies will soon have the chance to pay to get real names in the game, for a 贄 setup fee and โ a year service charge. Companies will pay alot more of course. But they are lining up, as game growth continues to be in the double digits every month.   < div>Adam Pasick, who will be known as "Adam Reuters" will be the first virtual news chief for the new Reuters bureau and says this is really no different than a normal non-cyber job once you get used to it. Journalists will report the news like any other outlet, and Reuters does not feel they are bending any editorial rules by doing this.

Neowin at Digital Life: PlayStation 3

Sony put a lot of focus on the PS3 this year and for good reason. With a large amount of the company's future riding on the video game system's hopeful success, they want to make sure every last person wants one to call their own. The system was being shown off on 40" Sony XBR2 LCD 1080p televisions. Graphically, the three games, NBA '07 and Resistance: Fall of Man, played smoothly and beautifully. The impressiveness of the graphics was definitely something that kept coming up in conversation between the convention guests. From the crisp textures to the liquid smooth animations, it was easy to see how powerful the PS3 really is. However, the "wow" factor was missing. The players in NBA '07 looked NOTHING like their real life counterparts and really took away from the whole experience. Resistance: Fall of Man, while visually stunning, also failed to amaze. In terms of game play, Resistance came across as just another shooter offering nothing in the way of truly ground breaking game play.

Granted, I'm not a video game expert or professional reviewer, but neither is most of the general public. One can't deny the beauty of the graphical prowess offered by the PS3, however, if there is no game play innovation, should we be led to believe that the beauty is only skin deep?

Does Windows 7 reduce netbook battery life?

The vast majority of netbooks on the market today ship with Windows XP. And the nearly decade-old operating system runs pretty well on a machine with a 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 CPU and all the usual netbook specs like 1GB of RAM and a 160GB hard drive. You know what else runs surprisingly well on these netbooks? Windows 7, the upcoming next-gen operating system from Microsoft. Theres just one catch: It looks like most netbooks may be optimized for Windows XP, and without the proper drivers some netbooks get dramatically worse battery life when running Windows 7.

Microsoft's Vista fails to find 'Second Life'

Despite Microsoft's virtual concert launch party for Windows Vista in Second Life, according to a recent post on Second Life's official blog, some Vista users cannot reliably connect to the virtual world. Second Life engineers are working on a fix, said blog publisher Linden Lab: " The changes that are currently in the First Look Viewer (a test version of the Second Life viewer) are an important precursor to any reasonable attempt for us to debug problems with running Second Life under Windows Vista. These changes are just about ready for an official release, at which point we will start the process of ensuring that Second Life runs under Vista ." Linden Lab makes money selling virtual clothing, real estate and other goods. A spokesman for Linden Lab said the fixes are likely to be ready in a couple of weeks.

Steam vs. Microsoft Live... Fight!

If anyone stands a chance against Microsoft's pay-to-play Games For Windows Live service, it's Valve's Steam. Turns out the gloves come off in just a few weeks.

Starting in July, Valve plans to offer a free update that adds social networking services like personal pages and gamer profiles, groups, game scheduling, the option to see who's played what games (or with whom), and both voice and text-based chat. The services work across all existing titles, old or new. And for all that, you'll only have to pay? Absolutely nothing.

Microsoft Live currently has Halo 2 and Shadowrun, the former an oldie (if goodie), the latter a middling multiplayer-only shooter. Steam has Half-Life, Half-Life 2 (plus all the upcoming episodes), Medieval 2: Total War, Trackmania, Civilization 4, Hitman: Blood Money, Sid Meier's Pirates, Counter-Strike, Geometry Wars, Sam & Max, The Movies, DEFCON, and several dozen more critically well-received games...
