The problem affected patch number MS06-007, which fixes a TCP/IP vulnerability in several versions of Windows that could allow a denial-of-service attack. Microsoft called the patch important but not critical, and said users should install it as soon as possible. It was one of several patches released yesterday (see "Microsoft issues seven security patches").

life cycle. Very specific upgrade paths from other versions of Windows Vista exist also. You can perform a "Custom Install" which is pretty much a
clean install, but you have the option to install Windows 7 to another disk without overwriting data.

10.08.2009Vista Continues to Gain Acceptance
In spite of the heavy and widespread criticism, Microsofts latest operating system, Windows Vista, managed to once again increase its popularity in
August, leaving behind not only outdated Windows 2000, but also outstripping Apples Mac OS.
In August the share of Windows
Vista-based computers used to browse the Internet was 6.26%, up considerably from June and July, according to data collected by
Net Applications, a provider of Web tools. The shares of Windows
2000 and Windows XP operating systems decreased slightly to 3.66% and 80.48%, respectively, which is quite natural as old computers are replaced with
new ones and a lot of systems nowadays come with Windows Vista operating system.
It is interesting to note that currently the
share of Windows Vista-based personal computers is even higher than that of Mac OS-based systems, which are used by 6.15% of users. Still, Apple is
also gaining popularity slowly but surely, something which cannot be said about other operating systems, namely outdated Windows versions, Linux
OSes and so on, which have been losing market share for many months now and are used in 3.44% of systems that are used for Internet browsing.
In late July Microsoft said it had managed to sell 60 millionth copy of Windows Vista operating system (OS) late in June and that the
install base of Vista eclipsed the whole install base of Apple computers in the first five weeks of sales.

Microsoft Advises Users To Run Update Again
Windows users may have to
update their PCs more than
once to completely patch one
of the vulnerabilities
Microsoft fixed last week, the
company's support site said
Monday. Security update
MS06-061 -- one of five
labeled "critical" by
Microsoft -- may install
multiple versions of the XML
Parser or XML Core Services
when it's downloaded manually
or via an automatic update
mechanism. But "if you
install a version of MSXML
after you install this
security update, you may have
to install an additional
package for this security
update," read a Microsoft
support document. That
"additional package" can
only be acquired by running
Automatic Update a second
time, said security company
Symantec.
"Users
that may have been affected
are advised to re-scan their
system for additional updates
which may result in an
additional patch being
accessible that wasn't
before," Symantec said in an
alert to customers.
"Administrators who are
planning to, or who already
have, applied the MS06-061
patches are advised to review
the knowledge base and
re-update their systems where
applicable."

Workaround Discovered For "Clean Install" With Vista Upgrade
DailyTech has posted a 7-step
workaround courtesy of Paul
Thurrott (via Microsoft
internal documents) on how to
perform a clean install with a
Windows Vista Upgrade DVD. Per
Microsoft's new licensing
requirements for Vista, users
are required to install a
Windows Vista Upgrade from
within Windows XP and to make
matters worse, the Windows XP
license is forfeited. The
process may be tedious, but
few will argue when they
compare the price differences
between the upgrade and retail
versions. Here we go:- Boot from the
Windows Vista Upgrade DVD and
start the setup
program.
- When prompted
to enter your product key, DO
NOT enter it. Click "Next"
and proceed with setup. This
will install Windows Vista as
a 30-day trial.
- When
prompted, select the edition
of Vista which you have
purchased and continue with
setup.
- Once setup has
been completed and you have
been brought to the desktop
for the first time, run the
install program from within
Windows Vista.
- This
time, type in your product key
when prompted.
- When
asked whether to perform an
Upgrade or Custom (advanced)
install, choose Custom
(advanced) to perform a clean
install of Vista. Yes, this
means that you will have to
install Vista for a second
time.
- Once setup has
completed for the second time,
you should be able to activate
Windows Vista normally. You
can also delete the
Windows.old directory which
contains information from the
first Vista
install.

OneCare and Defender to
integrate further?
The Windows Live OneCare team
used its blog yesterday to
announce they are currently
working on one of their most
requested feedback:
integration with Windows
Defender, Microsoft's
antispyware utility, still in
beta 2 version.
The first thing they did in
that way is to modify the
OneCare setup so that it also
installs Windows Defender in
the background.
"For those interested
in the technical details, now,
when you install OneCare, as
long as you accept the default
prompts, the Windows Defender
install itself goes on behind
the scenes, and the Windows
Genuine Advantage check goes
on behind the scenes. During
the Windows Live OneCare
install process, the default
setting is to automatically
install Windows Defender with
automatic updates turned on.
However you will be given the
option to turn off automatic
updates of Defender signatures
or forego the Windows Defender
installation altogether if you
wish. "
The team also said
it will be easy to remove
Defender if wished, though the
didn't say if it'll be
through the usual Add/Remove
Programs or another way (a
button through the OneCare
front-end, for example).

Microsoft proposes "Browser Ballot Screen" to the EU
We've previously reported that Microsoft was planning to ship Windows 7 in Europe without Internet Explorer. But now, reports are saying that
users could be given the choice of which browser to install when they install Windows 7 in Europe as proposed by Microsoft to the European Commission.
"Under our new proposal, among other things, European consumers who buy a new Windows PC with Internet Explorer set as their default browser would
be shown a ‘ballot screen' from which they could, if they wished, easily install competing browsers from the Web. If this proposal is
ultimately accepted, Microsoft will ship Windows in Europe with the full functionality available in the rest of the world.
