Windows Home Server Technical Brief for Home Computer Backup and Restore

Windows® Home Server will automatically backup your home computers to the home server and allow you to easily restore the entire computer or an individual file or folder to a previous point in time. The Windows Home Server Backup solution backs up only the data that has not already been backed up. Even if you have several copies of the same data on different computers, the data is backed up only once on your home server and your home server keeps track of what data was stored on each home computer on each day. This makes it efficient in the time it takes for backups to complete and the amount of space that is used on your home server.

Microsoft Partners Eagerly Awaiting Windows Home Server

Microsoft's partners are chomping at the bit to get their hands on Windows Home Server, but some feel it's going to make its biggest initial splash with tech-savvy users.

Due to launch this fall, Windows Home Server connects multiple PCs in the same household, and stores, manages, backs up and protects digital audio, video and photos.

In addition to centralized storage and backup, Windows Home Server also lets users access their digital content remotely, and is built on the secure platform of Windows Server 2003, says Joel Sider, senior product manager in the Windows Home Server group at Microsoft.

Although Windows Home Server is designed to be easy to install and use, the software fits well into the toolbox of home integrators, who can wrap it into a smart home solution along with home automation and networking technologies, Sider noted...

More info on Windows Home Server

Gizmodo has an interesting post that mentions a couple points often overlooked about Windows Home Server.

Windows Home Server only backs up one instance of a file that appears across your system. So think of it this way, if you are using WHS to backup your 5 Dell XPS laptops (lucky you), each freshly formatted with Vista and holding all of your MP3s, the amount of storage required to back them up isn't going to be much bigger than the amount of space required to backup one of them. Read more about the disk system here (pdf).

Another cool feature with Home Server is sharing the printers across your home network. Seems like I could run a small Kinko's out of my house and I was always at the wrong computer to print what I needed; text at the photo printer, pictures at the laser printer. Now all my printers are shared across the network - even available to visitors.

Windows Home Server & OneNote

As some of you might know Windows Home Server (WHS) is a new product released from Microsoft that allows you to have a server at home. WHS does a variety of things like backup all of your computers and makes sure you have your files on all of your machines and integrates with many other apps. It is really cool and of course some people out there are interested in storing their notebooks up on WHS and they have been asking to see if this is possible.

This is possible and you can store your files on your machine so it would be on a remote share in your house. Something like \whsNotebookShare and then you can open that in OneNote on all of your computers in your house and you will have a nice little shared notebook.

As of mid-December we have been getting a few reports that there is a problem where WHS will corrupt OneNote files...

Windows 7 to allow PC backups to network share

Windows Complete PC Backup is an image based backup tool where you could take a backup of your entire system and restore it later. Currently in Vista, the backed up image cannot be saved in a network share as in Windows Home Server. This requires to write the backup to DVD(s) or to an external hard drive.

With Windows 7, Long has discovered one can directly backup to a network share! I guess now’s a good a time as any to buy a NAS device. :)
