Windows Home Server Power Pack 3 update

Nicole Berett: Weve talked extensively about the improvements that Power Pack 3 for Windows Home Server will deliver for users.  We were proud to show off the beta code of Power Pack 3 at the recent CEDIA 2009 custom installer technology show, where we got lots of positive reception to the feature set.  Its clear that the anticipation of using Windows Home Server with the upcoming Windows 7 client PC operating system is reaching feverish pitch!  OK, maybe that was a slight exaggeration¦But the bottom line is that weve gotten tremendous feedback (and test coverage) from you, our enthusiasts, around Power Pack 3 “ and we couldnt be more excited.

This being said, our top priority is to ensure the absolute highest level of product quality, and to this end, we will continue with additional testing of the software. As with past software releases, our team will not ship the official final release of Power Pack 3 until the community has validated our work. We expect to deliver before the end of the year.

Windows Home Server Power Pack 1 Public Beta

Microsoft has detailed its plans to release a public beta of its Windows Home Server Power Pack.

The update will include a fix for the data corruption issues that have plagued the OS since its release.

In a message to potential testers the company said:

"Due to the nature of the shared folder data corruption bug (KB #946676) a broad beta test program with sufficient time for feedback is required. The time line for a final release will depend on this feedback and testing, in order to deliver a fix of the highest quality. To meet our goals for the beta test we need the number of beta testers who are actively using and testing the Power Pack 1 beta to ramp up very quickly"

The company is asking for anyone currently using Home Server to sign up to the beta to ensure the data corruption issue is fixed.

While the board isn't the most plug and play compatible hardware out there for Home Server, this will show you how to make it work.

At last, a bridge between Windows Home Server and Media Center

With this week's release of Power Pack 2 for Home Server, Microsoft is filling a very important gap. Up until recently, the company had been maintaining that the place for users to store videos and multimedia was on their Media Center computers (generally Windows Vista Ultimate-based systems), and the place for their "everyday files" was their Home Server. But the biggest and most cumbersome "everyday files" are multimedia files, including those that deserve to be streamed and accessed by Media Center. While setting up Media Center to include a Home Server folder as one of its "watch folders" is one option for getting files listed, that's not as rich as setting up a streaming connection...
