Windows Internet Explorer 7 DOWNLOAD

Few days ago at RSA, Bill Gates talked about Internet Explorer 7. As the guy responsible for IE, I wanted to say a couple of things about it.

First, some basics: we’re committing to deliver a new version of Internet Explorer for Windows XP customers. Betas of IE7 will be available this summer. This new release will build on the work we did in Windows XP SP2 and (among other things) go further to defend users from phishing as well as deceptive or malicious software.

New Test Build of WPC Released

Microsoft made available for download on Wednesday the January Community Technology Preview test build of WinFX.

That means testers can get their hands on refreshed builds of Windows Communication Foundation (WCF), Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) and Windows Workflow Foundation (WF).

Microsoft also is making "Go Live" builds of WCF and WF available to testers who are interested in deploying these technologies in production early.

More New Windows Dev Tools on the Way

The Windows Presentation Foundation isn't the only new Windows subsystem to which Microsoft is encouraging developers to write.

The company also wants to foster development around the Windows Communication Foundation (WCF, or "Indigo") and Windows Workflow Foundation (WF).

To encourage this, Microsoft is working on some new designers for WCF and WF. No word on when the company will make these new tools available, however.

Gates Foundation donates $6.9m to libraries

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation have stated that they will begin a new pilot program spanning 7 US states which will help fund Internet expansion into public libraries, as well as donating $850,000 to the American Library Association's Office for Information Technology Policy. The Foundation has carefully selected Arkansas, California, Kansas, Massachusetts, New York, Texas, and Virginia to be included in the initiative after monitoring Internet speeds and congestion at libraries. These libraries will receive a much-needed upgrade with $6.8 million donated by the Foundation.

Gates Foundation CEO Stepping Aside

Patty Stonesifer, who has served as chief executive of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation since its inception in 1997, is stepping aside.



Stonesifer, 51, will leave her role as CEO of the world's largest charitable foundation by Jan. 1, 2009, but she won't be leaving the organization, the foundation says.



Her new job title has not been announced.

Microsoft Launches Open Source Foundation

Just days after being accused of attempting to unleash potentially harmful Linux-related patents to find their way into the hands of open-source-hating patent trolls, Microsoft is now slated to announce its founding of a new foundation to support open-source software.



According to foundation documents and published reports, the group will be known as the CodePlex Foundation and will be led by Sam Ramji, Microsoft's senior director of Platform Strategy. Ramji has been Microsoft's guy in the hot seat in dealing directly with various factions of the open-source community, including the Apache Software Foundation and the Eclipse Foundation. And Ramji has proven his mettle in establishing relationships with those organizations and others. Ramji will be the interim president of the foundation.

Several industry leaders in the tech industry, and in particular the online side of it, have officially joined the OpenID foundation as corporate board members, including Microsoft, Yahoo, Google, IBM, and VeriSign.
