SSDs are every year getting better, still not there yet

To date, the solid-state disk has been a tech mirage. The vision is great, but it always seems to be just over the horizon. SSDs have struggled to live up the performance promises, and they remain too expensive to provide any real competition to hard drives.

Gates: Windows 7 May Come 'in the next year or so'

Why Windows 7 will be out later this year

With the public Windows 7 release candidate right around the corner, and development towards the RTM on track, people are wondering "When is the final release date for Windows 7?" With many dates flying around, I personally think that Windows 7 will be out later this year, and here's why: First, let's back up a bit. Microsoft has set an internal date of January, 2010, approximately 3 years after Vista. Now let's say for the sake of argument that turns out to be true. This would be a big mistake for Microsoft because they'll miss the crucial holiday season, when obviously people will be buying new computers and software, and we all remember how badly Vista's release went.

What you won’t hear Microsoft talk about at WinHEC 2007

Usually, at the annual Microsoft Windows Hardware Engineering Conferences (WinHECs), Microsoft provides its system partners with some information about what's coming next on the operating systems front. Even if not a full-fledged roadmap, usually there are a few hints, a handful of futures slides, a couple of thinly-veiled references to general directions.

This year: The future has been ruled off limits, at least on the Windows client front.

Execs are not talking at all about Windows Vista Service Pack (SP) 1 or "Fiji," the Media Center update expected later this year. And don't even think about hearing/seeing anything on Windows Seven, a k a Windows 2009. ..

Windows Vista November CTP Cancelled

The second beta of Windows Vista will not come until next year, Microsoft said Tuesday.

T he software maker did not give a time frame for the release of Beta 2 of the operating system, and said only that it would have more to say next year. Microsoft had not said when Beta 2 will come, but some had expected it might come in December or January.

Microsoft did say it still plans to release the final version of Vista in the second half of next year.

"First and foremost, we are still on track for general availability in the second half of calendar year 2006," said Amitabh Srivastava, a corporate vice president in Microsoft's Windows unit.

Microsoft also said Tuesday that it will end the monthly schedule for interim Community Technology Preview updates of the Vista code. The third CTP release, planned for November, now will not happen until December, it said. ..

Windows Vista Security One Year Later

Now that Windows Vista has been available to business customers for more than a year, it’s a good time to go back and look at how it’s holding up from a security perspective. I think that it’s fair to say that Windows Vista is proving to be the most secure version of the Windows to date. Our investments in the SDL and our defense in depth approach to building Windows Vista seem to be paying off. Let’s take a look at some areas that we’ve made progress in: the impact of defense-in-depth; Internet Explorer 7’s protection of personal information; vulnerabilities and infections; and cost savings. First, let’s look at the impact of defense-in-depth features like User Account Control and Internet Explorer Protected Mode. These features have helped reduce both the risk and severity of security bulletins, giving enterprises more time to deploy patches:

Happy New Year from JCXP!

Well, 2007 is just around the bend and has even come for some already, so we would like to take this moment to wish you all a Happy New Year! :)

2006 was quite a year, especially in the software world. The most significant events of course would be the RTM of Windows Vista and Office 2007. It went by fast, and sure was one heck of a year.

We've gone through many structural changes this year with staff and how we operate the site, finally I think we've found the right balance, one of the biggest things we've done has been to strongly enforce our "no warez" policy. You can expect a few "changes" in the coming year of 2007 to our site, just keep patient and wait :P *cough 2.0*

We thank you all for sticking with us this year and we hope you're all going to be here a lot longer, we've met a good few good people here and we hope to meet a good few more!

So once again, Happy New Year to all, let's enjoy 2006 while it lasts and let's make sure we make the most of 2007!

Also, please remember to drink responsibly, know your limits and take it easy. Make sure you and your friends get home safe tonight (Yes, even if it involves you putting their keys down your pants to make sure they don't try and drive drunk) :)

-- David, Greg and the rest of the staff here at JCXP

Gartner: PC sales to drop despite Windows 7

Research firm Gartner have published their predictions for PC sales for 2009, predicting that worldwide sales will fall by 6% from 2008 levels. The sales of netbooks, however, are set to rise. Gartner forecast that 274 million computers will be sold this year, down from 292 million units last year. This is actually higher than the 257 million units they predicted earlier this year due to growth that is expected in the fourth quarter of 2009. This growth is set to then set continue into 2010 with a growth of 10.3% currently projected. 21 million netbooks are expected to have been shipped this year and 30 million are predicted for next year.

Windows 7 moves toward August 2009 RTM

Cnet has come up with a report saying that Microsoft is set to release Windows 7 by the end of this year's holiday shopping season based on PC industry sources in Asia and the U.S. According to the ZDNet Taiwan site, Taiwan hardware vendors are certain about Windows 7's final official release in 2009. As pointed out by some computer manufacturers, the official version of Windows 7 will be available ahead of the planned schedule, that is before October this year. The English version of the OS will be available to system operators in August, and the Chinese version in October. Microsoft will officially pre-market Windows 7 now by labeling Windows Vista computers with Windows 7 ready stickers.

A Second Shot: Windows Vista SP1

Its hard to say the last year has been anything but rough for Microsofts Windows division. Although we found Windows Vista favorable upon its launch last year after watching it go through an usually drawn-out development process, such a sentiment hasnt been shared by Windows users as a whole. Windows XP proved to be every bit the competition for Vista that Microsoft could ever fear it would be, at the time as when Vista was having its own post-launch pains. It was a bad combination, making for a bad year for Microsofts efforts in pushing its first new desktop OS in 5 years. Microsoft was looking to make a solid case for why Vista is a worthwhile successor to XP in a market notorious for a resistance to change, and they failed to do this thanks to a failure in immature technology and an inability to get a consistent and convincing message out.

Momentum for Windows Home Server remains strong. During the first year, Windows Home Server has been embraced by System Builders in over 50 countries. The list of hardware partners continues to grow and third-party software developers have released or have announced more than 60 Add-in programs extending Windows Home Servers capabilities.
