'Lost' preview doubles as Windows Vista ad

The link below is a video of a "Lost" promo using the Flip 3D interface. The blog entry points out that the average user may not realize that the Flip 3D effect has anything to do with Windows Vista. Of course, this is part of a broader campaign, including traditional 30- and 60-second television ads. But from this ad alone, the connection isn't necessarily obvious, even if Windows Vista is mentioned at the end. Either way, Microsoft's marketing team is obviously trying various approaches with the launch of the software giant's latest OS.

Free Vista Sunday, 3D desktop with Real Desktop Light

Jonathan Schlaffer: Vista has been an all-around disappointment and even those with SP1 have reason to complain. Those with problems are probably more outspoken than those that dont but the issues keep piling up and Microsoft does little about them. This program may brighten up your Vista experience a tiny bit.

Real Desktop comes it two forms, Real Desktop Standard and Real Desktop Light; major differences set the two apart. With Real Desktop Standard you get all the features and with Light, not so much.

The light version gives you a basic, fully 3D desktop environment. You can stack icons, drag them anywhere on the desk, flip them around, upside down and several other neat things. What you cant do is change the wallpaper or orientation of the camera. The other thing thats annoying is the light version lacks the ability to reset the icon positions; as you can see below, its very easy to mess them up.

Sadly that was all that was said about the new TVs. Will they require special 3D glasses, likely, but it is unknown for sure. One can only hope that these TVs will be sold in many markets but it's still too far out to speculate.

3D desktop revealed in recent Apple patent filing

Dozens of Apple patent applications were published lately revealing research that Apple had completed in 2007 on many topics encompassing future versions of Mac OS X. The most intriguing is a series of patent applications which describe a "Multidimensional" user interface. Apple has essentially been working on true 3D desktop environments. It's not clear when and if Apple will decide to implement these new 3D desktop design ideas into a future version of Mac OS X. The 3D desktop idea suggests that Apple would take their existing Mac OS components like the dock, dashboard, add more depth and give a three dimensional look.
