08.07.2008Microsoft releases two new server packages
Windows Essential Business Server 2008 and
Windows Small Business Server 2008 have just been officially added to
the Microsoft Operating System family. Customers can get a copy of the latest server editions, which will be available in both Standard Edition, and
Premium Edition. Both premium editions of the servers come with Windows Server 2008 Standard and Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Standard for Small
Business, where the standard versions do not.
Windows Small Business Server is targeted at the smaller businesses with 5-75 users while
Windows Essential Business Server is for businesses with 25-300 users, for mid-sized businesses. Microsoft released these versions to answer to
smaller businesses that didn't wish to pay the price tag of Windows Server 2008, which is focused for handling more users, and heavier traffic.
These editions are added to the already successful Windows Server 2008 that released on February 27 of this year in multiple versions.

Microsoft is sharing more details about its small- and mid-size servers due out later this year that will be built around

Both of these servers are part of the
newly-christened Essential Server Solutions Family. At the
low end (for users with 50 PCs or fewer), Microsoft will offer Windows Small Business Server 2008, the product codenamed “Cougar.” For
mid-size companies, Microsoft is readying Windows Essential Business Server 2008, codenamed

Whats next for Windows Server
With Microsoft having just released to manufacturing SQL Server 2008 the last unshipped
piece of its updated application platform it’s time to look ahead as to what’s next for Windows Server.
In the very
near term, Windows Essential Business Server (Centro) and Windows Small Business Server 2008 (Cougar) are due to ship this fall. Microsoft has said both products will be available by November 12. Both families are based on the Windows Server
2008 code base, and given that SQL Server 2008 finally hit RTM, are likely to include the latest version of Microsoft’s database, rather than
SQL Server 2005 (which was the contingency plan if the SQL Server team didn’t manage to RTM soon enough).
Next up is
Windows Server 2008 Release 2 (R2), a minor Windows Server update. (The Windows Server team has been delivering a new release of Windows Server just
about every two years, alternating between major and more minor, R2, releases.)

Coming Soon: Windows Live OneCare for Server
Steven VanRoekel, senior director of Windows Server Product Solutions, and I discussed the new product in a Microsoft Watch podcast posted today.
"This is something new," VanRoekel said. "Windows Live OneCare for Server is a one-year server anti-virus engine." The software will be bundled
with Small Business Server and Essential Server 2008 editions, along with a one-year subscription to Forefront for Exchange. "We've taken a
different tact on connecting subscription services with the core infrastructure," VanRoekel said about the bundling.
I asked if Microsoft
planned to extend Windows Live OneCare for Server bundling to the desktop. "No. We're not doing any client AV with this wave. We think that's
part of the partner opportunity with the product," VanRoekel said.
