OneCare and Defender to integrate further?

The Windows Live OneCare team used its blog yesterday to announce they are currently working on one of their most requested feedback: integration with Windows Defender, Microsoft's antispyware utility, still in beta 2 version.

The first thing they did in that way is to modify the OneCare setup so that it also installs Windows Defender in the background.

"For those interested in the technical details, now, when you install OneCare, as long as you accept the default prompts, the Windows Defender install itself goes on behind the scenes, and the Windows Genuine Advantage check goes on behind the scenes. During the Windows Live OneCare install process, the default setting is to automatically install Windows Defender with automatic updates turned on. However you will be given the option to turn off automatic updates of Defender signatures or forego the Windows Defender installation altogether if you wish. "

The team also said it will be easy to remove Defender if wished, though the didn't say if it'll be through the usual Add/Remove Programs or another way (a button through the OneCare front-end, for example).

Windows Defender picked apart

Windows Defender, a security application built in to windows Vista, has again come in for criticism from security experts.

Researchers from Enex TestLab, an independent testing facility, tested Windows Defender and found that it only blocked 46 per cent of current spyware threats.

"These results show Vista requires more work to protect users," said Matt Tett, Senior Test Engineer for Enex TestLab.

However, Microsoft has always maintained that Windows Defender is supposed to work in conjunction with third-party security software, not instead of it. Microsoft's Jim Allchin was forced to clarify comments he made in November last year when he said his son was using a Vista PC with no anti-virus software installed.

Webroot: Vista's Defender stops 16% of 25 Spyware Samples

According to the results of a two-week study of Windows Defender by Webroot, a leading antispyware vendor and Microsoft competitor, the product missed 84% of a sample set of 25 spyware, Trojan horse programs and keyloggers. Many of the samples were unable to install on Vista and simply crashed, but others got through just fine. Webroot's Spy Sweeper product spotted all of the samples.

Gerhard Eschelbeck, Chief Technology Officer at Webroot, said the point of the study was not to draw specific conclusions. He acknowledged that 25 samples was a tiny fraction and that it may be possible for Microsoft or other competitors to pick samples of malicious code that would evade Webroot's Spy Sweeper. " It's important to leave the interpretation up to individuals. People need to make their own conclusions about it ," he said. Eschelbeck noted that Microsoft should update Windows Defender quicker than on a weekly basis. Webroot has been hurt by Microsoft's entry into the desktop and enterprise security business and the company's decision to offer Windows Defender as a free download.
