Quick and Dirty Quad-Core "Penryn" Benchmarks

Benchmarks of Intels Penryn based dual-core Wolfdale have appeared a couple times in the past month. The early benchmarks tested engineering sample processors and showed Wolfdale, on average, performing 5 percent faster, clock for clock then Conroe. However, benchmarks of the quad-core Yorkfield are virtually non-existent to the public.

Intels Yorkfield is not a native quad-core design. As with Kentsfield, Yorkfield features two dual-core dice fused together. The design results in each pair of cores having access to its own pool of shared L2 cache. Since Penryn has more cache, each pair of cores has access to 6MB of L2 for a total of 12MB “ up from the 4MB per pair and 8MB total of Kentsfield.

In addition to the increased cache size, Penryn features faster 24-way associative L2 cache, which cuts off a few clock cycles. Kentsfield has an 18-way associative L2 cache.

Sun leaks 6-core Intel processor details

Late last month in Austria, Intel presented Sun with roadmaps discussing details of its upcoming server platforms, including the fairly secret Xeon Dunnington and Nehalem architectures. Unfortunately for some, this presentation ended up on Sun's public web server over the weekend.

Dunnington, Intel's 45nm six-core Xeon processor from the Penryn family, will succeed the Xeon Tigerton processor. Whereas Tigerton is essentially two 65nm Core 2 Duo processors fused on one package, Dunnington will be Intel's first Core 2 Duo processor with three dual-core banks. Dunnington includes 16MB of L3 cache shared by all six processors. Each pair of cores can also access 3MB of local L2 cache. The end result is a design very similar to the AMD Barcelona quad-core processor; however, each Barcelona core contains 512KB L2 cache, whereas Dunnington cores share L2 cache in pairs.

To sweeten the deal, all Dunnington processors will be pin-compatible with Intel Tigerton processors, and work with the existing Clarksboro chipset. Intel's slide claims this processor will launch in the second half of 2008 -- a figure consistent with previous roadmaps from the company.

Intel Turbo Memory Gets Lukewarm Welcome from Mobo Producers

Despite of various demonstrations of how additional NAND flash cache can improve performance of modern computers and take advantage of Microsoft Windows Vista additional capabilities, mainboard makers are still reluctant to install appropriate hardware on their products.

Intel Turbo Memory (previously code-named Robson) technology allows Microsoft Windows Vista to pre-cache certain types of data and speed up its loading by using special NAND flash-based cache. The new operating system features an array of technologies, including SuperFetch, ReadyBoost, ReadyDrive, and ReadyBoot that can take advantage of the flash cache, which can also be located on a system's hard disk drive. But Intel Turbo Memory does not come for free. At this point makers of mainboards can either install a special Turbo Memory 1GB module for desktops, which costs $23, or install a special type of Intel's I/O controllers and a flash memory chip. The latter option would cost motherboard makers considerably less: up to $3 for a south bridge and from $7 to $10 a 1GB flash chip or chips.

All Phenoms feature infamous L3 cache errata

Sadly for AMD, the Phenom launch was dumbed down by a nasty bug that stopped AMD from launching a 2.4 GHz variant (9700).

At the same time, problems with the OS freezing were solved by a BIOS fix inside the motherboards that actually reduces performance between five to 10 per cent, since that BIOS update did nothing but ordered a processor to avoid that ill-fated corrupted cache data.

The problem with L3 cache caused performance reduction on all clock speeds and yes, Phenoms 2.2 and 2.3 GHz are affected as well, but it was really noticable at 2.4 GHz. BIOS run-around caused a 2.4 GHz part producing performance of 100-200 MHz slower parts. Of course, standard disclaimer in some rare-found, practically laboratory-only instances applies here.

Intel Core 2 Duo T7800 to debut 2 September

Intel will launch its fastest mainstream mobile microprocessor on 2 September and tweak the prices of some of its existing Core 2 Duo and line-up. The same day will see Celeron M prices cut too as the new 550 debuts.

Intel documents seen by Register Hardware show the T7800 will replace the current T7700 as the top-of-the-line laptop-friendly Core 2 Duo. The new chip will be clocked at 2.6GHz and operate over an 800MHz frontside bus. It has 4MB of L2 cache.

It will be accompanied by the 2GHz T7250. Intel already has a 2GHz Core 2 Duo, the T7200, but it runs on a 667MHz FSB - the T7250 bumps that clock frequency up to 800MHz. However, it has 2MB of cache to its predecessor's 4MB...

AMD Phenom X4 processor pricing update

Different to a report unveiled earlier this month, a new pricing scheme for Phenom X4 processors would mean that AMD is ready to undercut similar Intel "Penryn" quad core processors when they are released next Monday.

The new Phenom processors are based on the K10 micro-architecture and will be aimed directly towards Intels Core 2 family. On launch date you can expect three models to be available, all Phenom X4s which means they will carry four cores and a 2+2MB L2/L3 Cache: the 9700 (2.4GHz), 9600 (2.3GHz), and 9500 (2.2GHz).

According to sources close to AMD distribution channels we got word that volume pricing for these processors would look like this next Monday:
Phenom X4 9700 / 2400MHz / 4MB Cache / 2000MHz HT / 125W - $279
Phenom X4 9600 / 2300MHz / 4MB Cache / 1800MHz HT / 95W - $269
Phenom X4 9500 / 2200MHz / 4MB Cache / 1800MHz HT / 95W - $239

Ramping up for Windows Live Events (and maybe Groups too?)

Remember the Wave 2 launch dates given last month by Microsoft France? It seems that Windows Live Events could be just around the corner after a link to the service was spotted in a Live Search cached page. What makes this all the more interesting is the cached version of Spaces was running on build 1347, the current build running on spaces.live.com is only 1345.

Our friends over at Wagged have also been a little jumpy recently, conducting searches for Windows Live Events to see what information is already out. It seems like they are definitely ramping up for something over in Redmond.

And while we're on the topic of Spaces, there's also been some chatter on an MSN Groups upgrade to Windows Live Groups. The Wikipedia entry on it is well worth reading, thanks again to Live Search doing a great job in caching the non-public facing Groups homepage. Rock on the Live Search team.

Unlike Google Docs and Spreadsheets, which are delivered through an Internet browser, Microsoft plans to pre-install Works on computers and display advertisements stored in cache. The software normally retails for $39.99.

When a user connects to the Internet while using Works, that cache of ads will refresh, said Melissa Stern, a Microsoft senior product manager in the Office group...
