10.01.2009Microsoft confirms no Windows 7 restrictions on netbooks
Microsoft announced that they have removed the netbook restrictions that previously prevented users from installing any version of Windows 7 on their
netbook. The lifted restriction means users can install Windows 7 starter on a netbook, and that the three application restriction has been removed
as per consumer's request. "OEMs and ODMs have the choice to install any version of Windows on a netbook," a Microsoft UK spokesperson said.
"
Starter is an entry version and doesn't have many of the consumer or business features. The three application limit isn't there
anymore." Windows 7 Starter and Home Basic variety only come in 32bit versions and are missing a variation of features from the higher end versions.

Another Windows Vista SP1 Feature From TechEd
In one of the later session
during TechEd last week I
learned of another very cool
feature coming to Windows
Vista with Service Pack 1.
During his talk Wes Miller,
who is writing a ton for
TechNet magazine these days
mentioned that setup will now
be able to run either 32-bit
or 64-bit installs.
What does this mean?
Well basically a lot less
work for anyone who has to
deal with both 32-bit and
64-bit images. After SP1 you
will be able to deploy either
version of the OS from a
single DVD.
So
what?
Well the
reason this is a big deal is
if you are doing anything
custom with Windows PE then
you currently have to maintain
two boot wims (one 64 and one
32) and in extreme cases where
you have custom code you have
to maintain to codebase sets
because 64-bit WinPE doesn't
support 32bit code due to the
lack of WOW support .
It wasn't clear if WDS
would also offer this
capability, but it would make
sense.

32bit and 64bit XP, Vista SP1, Server 2008 Benchmarked
Trebuin: After seeing enough benchmarks out there that have been mis-run or talk without proof, I have finally finished benchmarking several versions
of Windows to show the differences.
I conducted each test using an Dell XPS m1330 with the following specs:
200GB 5400RPM Hard Disk in ATA, not AHCI mode
2 Gigs RAM
Core 2 Duo T7500 @ 2.2GHz
NVIDIA GeForce 8400 GS
174.94 GeForce Drivers
The test was conducted by wiping the previous partition, installing the operating system, installing
the chipset and all drivers, installing the benchmark, and rebooting prior to testing. This allowed for each operating to start on an equal playing
field.

that Beta 2 would be build

download from Microsoft's
Redmond server as the Dublin
and Singapore servers are
experiencing problems.

Live OneCare Home Page Crashes Internet Explorer 7 x64
So I'm sitting here trying to
get the Windows Live OneCare
version 1.6 story up on the
front page, and I can't
figure out why Internet
Explorer 7 keeps crashing.
I've never ever seen it crash
before. And yet, it always
seems to happily commit
suicide right before I'm done
putting the news article
together. I finally track the
problem down to the fact I
keep launching the OneCare
home page to grab the link.
Yes, you read
correctly. It would appear
that Microsoft's Windows Live
OneCare home page causes IE7
64bit to crash. I took the
liberty of downloading Firefox
x64 to make sure it had
nothing to do with 64bit web
browsers in general. Nope,
Firefox loaded the page just
fine. How embarrassing for
Microsoft. The issue has been
reproduced on two separate
Windows Vista machines with
entirely different
configurations. Can anyone
confirm the issue with IE7 x64
on XP?
Note: On
Vista x64, IE7 32bit will load
the site correctly.

NVIDIA Forceware 96.89 Leaked
Station
Drivers have got their
mits on some new beta
Forceware drivers that were
floating around. The drivers
would seem to be available in
both 32bit and 64bit
flavours.
Quite a
jump from the official 92.91
that are currently available
(as well as the 95.97 Quadro
certified drivers) and the
reason soon becomes
apparent:
NVIDIA_G80.DEV_0191.1 =
"NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTX"
NVIDIA_G80.DEV_0193.1 =
"NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS"
These cards are going
to be announced next week
apparently, but things are
pretty quiet about what could
be the first cards to support
DirectX10, we will have to
wait and see.
A few
places mentioned 96.61 drivers
floating around with these new
cards earlier this week but
obviously these are even newer
and apparently have support
for OpenGL 2.1 as well as
their fair share of bugs - use
them at your own risk.
