Office 12 to Feature 'Super Tooltips'

Tooltips, those little yellow popup boxes that provide information on a button or menu option, have become an indispensable part of the modern user interface. Now, Microsoft is looking to extend their usefulness by introducing what it calls "Super Tooltips" in the upcoming release of Office 12.

The next-generation Office suite from Microsoft is already slated to bring a major UI makeover. Standard toolbars have been replaced with task-oriented "Ribbons" that include features pertinent to the current job. But such a change will require a learning curve, which is where the new larger tooltips come in.

Internet Explorer is now an optional feature in Windows 7

Along with various other changes that are to be reflected in Windows 7 RC, here is a big change that is not in the list. From Windows 7 build 7048, Internet Explorer(IE) is an optional Windows feature and can be installed/uninstalled from Windows 7. This will be a welcoming (and surprising) news, especially to European Union and Opera who have accused Microsoft for not giving consumers a genuine choice of Web browsers. If IE is upgraded to version 8 in Vista (from version 7), users do get an option to uninstall IE 8, but not IE 7. IE 7 remains as integral component of Windows Vista which cannot be removed.

WLM Feature: Update!

Does Live Messenger?s new feature ?Music Mix? work for you?

It seems that yet another flashy feature for Windows Live Messenger might end up being just like the last.

It seems not many people have had much luck with getting ?Shared Folders? to work, and ?Music Mix? appears to be no different. After trying different methods to make the feature work, I spoke with a member of the Windows Live Messenger Beta team concerning problems with the feature.

Now we have reason to believe that problems with the ?Music Mix? might be due to Locale Settings, therefore you would have to change your locale to match a country that supports the feature. Currently ?Music Mix? is only available in the US, France, Germany, Japan, and the UK.

MSN Gets Another Feature!

Just when you thought there wouldn't be anything else interesting for messenger to surface, think again! The good people from the Live Messenger Beta Team have once again launched yet another feature.

"Mimic" is the new feature that was just launched today for MSN Messenger.

Accessible from the activities menu just like the last feature "Music Mix," "Mimic" is an add-on that is for people that enjoy playing pranks on their friends. This new feature is also good for people that just want to pretend they are someone they're really not. Along with this feature there are 8 different ?personas? to choose from.

At this point it hasn't been clarified as to when "Mimic" will be available for Windows Live Messenger. After the Windows Live Messenger team released the "Music Mix" feature to work with MSN, we can only hope that they add "Mimic" soon to Live Messenger!

Windows 7: Designing Aero Snap

Steven Sinofsky: Heres a behind the scenes look at the design of the Aero Snap feature in Windows 7. We thought it would be fun to take a look at the overall design process of the feature and the tools and techniques used. This feature poses a unique design challenge in that you just use the feature without any user-interface specifically to invoke it. As with all features this is a collaboration across all of our engineering disciplines. For this post, Stephan Hoefnagels, a Senior UX designer, presents the design perspective.

Sparkle produces the first 80 nanometre Nvidia card

MANY businesses in Europe will be closed from Monday till probably January the 3rd 2007. That hasn't stopped Sparkle from announcing its Calibre P768 card based on Geforce 7600 GT 80nm chip. I guess Nvidia had to do it in 2006 as it promised to its investors it was supposed to shift from 90 nanometre to 80 a while ago.

The new 80 nanometre parts will end up clocked at 650MHz - 90MHz faster than the previous 7600 GT clock. The chip behind it is G73 but we don't know what Nvidia calls the new 80 nanometre ones. The memory on Sparkle card works at 1600MHz and Nvidia hasn't changed the chip memory support as it still works with 128 bit memory only. The card comes with 256MB memory and has twelve rendering pipelines. It supports PCIe 16X interface.

The 3rd feature pack for Vista is arriving...

Microsoft will release a new Windows Feature Pack for Storage which contains 3 technologies:

Windows Feature Pack for Storage will be available for the following operating systems: Windows Vista, Windows Vista SP1, Windows Server 2008, Windows XP SP2+, Windows Server 2003 SP1+. Smartcard on XP is only available in 32 bit.

The Windows Feature pack for Storage won’t be the first Vista feature pack. Microsoft has released, in addition to the previously mentioned optical feature pack, the Windows Vista Feature Pack for Wireless and the Windows Media Center TV Pack.

Feature packs are a way for Microsoft to get new features to users without making them wait for the next major Windows release. Unlike Service Packs, which typically are more about bug fixes than new features, feature packs are, as the name suggests, the delivery vehicle for new, between-release, features.
