23.4.2006Windows 7 RC completed, build 7100
Company insiders and Wzor have confirmed that 7100 is the official Windows 7 RC build. 7100.0.winmain_win7rc.090421-1700 was compiled on Tuesday and
has reportedly been handed out to OEM partners and TAP gold customers. Earlier this month we reported that build 7077 had leaked online and that
Microsoft were pushing towards a 7100 RC release. Microsoft recently published details about a public RC due for May 5th. We expect MSDN/TechNet
customers to receive the bits within the next week if the company is still targeting May 5th. According to reports, 7115.0.winmain.090421-1650 is the
latest build internally at the time of writing.

23.04.2009Windows 7 build 7077 leaks
According to several reports from Neowin members, Windows 7 build 7077 has leaked to various torrent sites. Named as an RC escrow build it's
likely that 7077.0.090404-1255 is the RC that will be modified to 7100 and distributed widely in May. Microsoft confirmed the 7100 path yesterday on
its Engineering Windows 7 blog by advising users to modify the MinClient build number from 7100 to 7000 in order to enable beta to RC upgrades. It is
now expected that Microsoft will name 7100 as the RC build and builds 7105 onwards will be the ongoing development branched towards RTM.

Wzor is once again reporting that the Windows 7 winmain_win7rc branch has reached 7079. Yesterday build 7077 leaked via BitTorrent and we speculated
this could be the build that would be "renamed" to 7100 for the RC. It appears that isn't the case and Microsoft has built 7078.0.090406-1758
and 7079.0.090407-1902 over the last few days. We still expect Microsoft to name the RC build shortly and all bets are on 7100. Last month Microsoft

Windows 7 Release Candidate goes public... Oops
Tired of waiting for Microsoft to release the first (and likely only) release candidate of Windows 7? No worries, you can go and snatch it up now...
via torrents. Earlier today, build 7100 of Windows 7, the official Release Candidate build, leaked to the public.
While no new visual
elements stand out from previous builds, UI changes should no longer be expected this late in the game. Any changes from this point on will be, for
the most part, behind the scenes. One notable change however is Microsoft's decision to revert back to the previous active tile design for the
taskbar, as found in build 7068, as it no longer features the white hazy glow behind the icon.
The official release date of Windows 7 RC
is expected to be May 5th for the public, and slightly earlier for TechNet and MSDN subscribers.
Have you found anything new in this
build? Share it with us in our community forums...
Update: Microsoft now says the RC will be available to TechNet and MSDN subscribers on
April 30th.

Three HD Layers Today, Ten Tomorrow
HD DVD's dual-layer 30GB and
Blu-ray's dual-layer 50GB
media simply won't cut it for
movies in the future or at
least media manufacturers do
not believe they will.
Multi-layered discs seem to be
the expected road to take for
the high definition war. Ritek
has claimed to have
successfully designed a
deca-layer (10 layers) disc
that can be applied to both HD
DVD and Blu-ray formats. That
would equal to 150GB for HD
DVD and 250GB for Blu-ray,
assuming 15GB and 25GB layers,
respectively. Ritek officials,
however, remind us that the
real limitation comes from the
reader and writer laser diode
technology, not the physical
disc.
Meanwhile,
Toshiba Corporation seems
satisfied with their developed
triple-layer HD DVD-ROM (read
only) disc with a capacity of
51 gigabytes (3 x 17GB).
Where'd they get that number?
Yes, HD DVD discs normally
hold 15GB per layer, but an
extra 2GB has been squeezed in
thanks to improvement in disc
mastering technology. So
basically, you have the
Blu-ray dual-layer or the
HD-DVD triple-layer for ~50GB
of space. Thanks to the same
physical disc structure as a
standard DVD, Toshiba has said
that three layer discs are not
much costlier to produce.
Toshiba aims to secure
approval of the new disc by
the DVD Forum within 2007.
neowin.net - 11.01.2007
Call/Recall develops terabyte DVD-like discs
Storage firm Call/Recall today
revealed the 2-photon
disc, a new approach to
optical storage that could
dramatically increase the
amount of space for HD movies
and other forms of extra-large
content.
Rather than
burn two-dimensional pits as
with every optical format from
Laserdisc through to Blu-Ray
and HD DVD, the photonic
system creates 3D spaces on
the disc. The third axis
creates a near-exponential
amount of extra space. A
5.25-inch disc can hold 1TB --
40 times the space of a
single-layer Blu-Ray disc and
200 times that of a DVD, the
company says.
As the
technology can use stock
recording parts similar to
those used for mass-producing
DVDs and Blu-Ray discs,
however, the 2-photon format
should be relatively easy to
implement, expanding on
existing factories and even
using similar discs for the
upgrade. The capacity could
also allow for new storage
formats such as a one-inch
50GB disc for larger
cellphones and portable game
systems...

Windows 7 Build 7105
A short while ago, Windows 7 Build 7105 surfaced on the 'net, raising some eyebrows with its appearance. After previous rumors that the release
candidate could pop up sometime in early April (specifically April 10th), could this be a build not far off from the planned RC one?
Neowin reports that from an 'exculsive source,' they were able to pinpoint build 7100 as being the most viable build number to recieve the 'RC'
status. Compiled on April 4th, Build 7105 bears the following build string:
"6.1.7105.0.090404-1235_x86fre_client_en-us_Retail_Ultimate-GB1CULFRER_EN_DVD"
According to WZor, there are a few visible changes in
the build, despite its short time away from RC. The changes include:
1. Improved networking support, the work in the local network
2. Added support for some previously incompatible programs
3. Extras in the LP (?) and small cosmetic interface improvements
4. Added
support for new drivers for various devices
5. Extended support sensory displays
6. A small optimization and changes in the kernel
Besides some behind-the-scenes changes, it would seem that Microsoft is just putting on the final touches. Nerds rejoyce!

Windows Server 2008 R2 RC Includes Important Improvements to Hyper-V Implementation
Cameron Sturdevant: Windows Server 2008 R2 Release Candidate code was made available on April 30 to MSDN and TechNet subscribers. There are many
changes to the operating system. Here, I've highlighted some of the most important improvements in the implementation of Hyper-V. For example,
running guest systems can be configured on the fly to add or remove virtual hard drives. I tested using the newly released Windows 7 Build 7100 along
with the RC build of Windows Server 2008 R2. Changes in User Account Controls, PowerShell and AppLocker are all significant enough that IT managers
should brush off their study skills and buckle down with the newest version of Microsoft's server operating system. Also look for changes in Group
Policy, Active Directory, remote desktop services and deployment services. Even features that didn't change much in functionality usually have a new
address; I spent a fair amount of time during my testing just poking through the user interface, looking for familiar landmarks that had been buried
in new locations.
