17.5.2009Windows 7 RC completed, build 7100
Company insiders and Wzor have confirmed that 7100 is the official Windows 7 RC build. 7100.0.winmain_win7rc.090421-1700 was compiled on Tuesday and
has reportedly been handed out to OEM partners and TAP gold customers. Earlier this month we reported that build 7077 had leaked online and that
Microsoft were pushing towards a 7100 RC release. Microsoft recently published details about a public RC due for May 5th. We expect MSDN/TechNet
customers to receive the bits within the next week if the company is still targeting May 5th. According to reports, 7115.0.winmain.090421-1650 is the
latest build internally at the time of writing.

23.04.2009Windows 7 build 7077 leaks
According to several reports from Neowin members, Windows 7 build 7077 has leaked to various torrent sites. Named as an RC escrow build it's
likely that 7077.0.090404-1255 is the RC that will be modified to 7100 and distributed widely in May. Microsoft confirmed the 7100 path yesterday on
its Engineering Windows 7 blog by advising users to modify the MinClient build number from 7100 to 7000 in order to enable beta to RC upgrades. It is
now expected that Microsoft will name 7100 as the RC build and builds 7105 onwards will be the ongoing development branched towards RTM.

Reports: Windows 7 has reached build 7079
Wzor is once again reporting that the Windows 7 winmain_win7rc branch has reached 7079. Yesterday build 7077 leaked via BitTorrent and we speculated
this could be the build that would be "renamed" to 7100 for the RC. It appears that isn't the case and Microsoft has built 7078.0.090406-1758
and 7079.0.090407-1902 over the last few days. We still expect Microsoft to name the RC build shortly and all bets are on 7100. Last month Microsoft
hinted at a May public release for the RC.

Windows 7 RC gets its first bug, and it's a doozy
The first documented bug in the Windows 7 Release Candidate (build 7100) is a doozy.
Yesterday, Microsoft published Knowledge Base article 970789, which provides details of a problem that affects the 32-bit (x86)
English-language version of Windows 7 build 7100. The problem, in short, is that the installer incorrectly sets access control lists (ACLs) on the
root of the system drive. The longer version is described as follows...

Windows 7 Release Candidate goes public... Oops
Tired of waiting for Microsoft to release the first (and likely only) release candidate of Windows 7? No worries, you can go and snatch it up now...
via torrents. Earlier today, build 7100 of Windows 7, the official Release Candidate build, leaked to the public.
While no new visual
elements stand out from previous builds, UI changes should no longer be expected this late in the game. Any changes from this point on will be, for
the most part, behind the scenes. One notable change however is Microsoft's decision to revert back to the previous active tile design for the
taskbar, as found in build 7068, as it no longer features the white hazy glow behind the icon.
The official release date of Windows 7 RC
is expected to be May 5th for the public, and slightly earlier for TechNet and MSDN subscribers.
Have you found anything new in this
build? Share it with us in our community forums...
Update: Microsoft now says the RC will be available to TechNet and MSDN subscribers on
April 30th.

Facebook Optimized for Windows Mobile
Microsoft has released developer tools for the creation of optimized Facebook applications on Windows Mobile. See the developer tools here. The good thing about these tools is the integration with
pretty much all the Windows Mobile applications themselves, so youll be able to let your Facebook apps take advantage of mobile media-sharing,
contacts synchronization, and Outlook integration.
That makes it easier on the consumer end for the real-life utilization of
certain applications found on Facebook. Either way, Facebook apps
can ow be better optimized for use on Windows Mobile, but the benefit of this set of APIs is the option for a deeper integration.

Update: Windows Optimized Desktop for the Enterprise
Chris Flores: We've been talking with a lot of organizations about what they need most from an optimized desktop experience, and we've been making
great progress in delivering against those needs. I want to take this opportunity to share details on the Windows Optimized Desktop Scenarios and
highlight some news.
If you've been reading this blog regularly, you will have seen updates on the work we're doing with the
Optimized Desktop. I contributed a blog on this in January for our Virtualization Strategy Day and a second blog about the announcements we had made at the Microsoft Management Summit (MMS) in Las Vegas in late April. While there are many facets
to the Optimized Desktop, the framework is based on technologies that enable decoupling the traditional desktop stack of hardware, operating system,
applications, data, settings and user profiles, making desktop management more efficient and easing change and user migration.

Sandisk: Windows Vista not optimized for solid state drives
SanDisk said Monday that Windows Vista is not optimized for solid state drives, delaying the delivery of optimized drives until next year.
Solid state drives (SSDs) are used instead of hard disk drives in select high-end notebook PCs today such as the Apple MacBook Air and
Toshiba Portege R500.
The next generation of SSDs will use multilevel cell (MLC) technology, which will require a more
sophisticated controller--a crucial component in solid state drives. These drives will have capacities ranging up to 128GB, 160GB, and later, 256GB.
MLC drives are expected to appear in a wider selection of notebooks later this year.

AMD Highlights Optimized Integration between Quad-Core Opteron and Upcoming Microsoft Products
AMD today announced it is demonstrating platforms based on Quad-Core AMD Opteron™ processors, including features designed to help Microsoft Windows
application developers optimize their software applications through tools in upcoming software products from Microsoft Corp. The technology
demonstrations at the conference in Barcelona, Spain show new integration with Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 and Quad-Core AMD Opteron processors.
Ongoing collaboration throughout product development has ensured that Visual Studio 2008 tools will produce optimized code when
compiling for Quad-Core AMD Opteron processors. This hardware/software collaboration is designed to ensure that software developers will enjoy
improved instruction selection, optimized register allocation and enhanced 128-bit floating-point performance.
śThe Microsoft
Visual Studio suite represents key building blocks in the Windows software development tools stack and is widely used by the Windows development
community. This is why Visual Studio support for AMD processors is so important to us- it provides a highly productive environment for our customers
to connect their hardware and software,ť said Earl Stahl, vice president of Software Development at AMD. śThe hardware/software collaboration is vital
across the entire Microsoft Application Platform, so we are also working to ensure that Microsoft Windows Server 2008 and Microsoft SQL Server 2008
are optimized for Quad-Core AMD Opteron processors.ť
