09.10.2008Microsoft gets an earful on what users want in future Windows releases
In December 2006, Microsoft
requested feedback from a
select group of invitees
regarding what they would like
to see fixed, changed and/or
added to future Windows
builds. The Windows team got
an earful: Nearly 800 new
feature requests, another
560-plus change requests and
almost 400 defects.
That list has been
winnowed down to about 70 of
the most popular requests and
posted the week of July 9 to
Microsofts Connect beta site.
This isnt the
official Windows Seven or
Windows Eight feature list.
But the list does indicate
some of the features that
testers are the most
interested in seeing make it
into the next Windows release
or two.

If you are a fan of tweaking your system and disabling services, you might find that over time your Windows Services list becomes huge and unwieldy

alternatively completely delete the service. This technique can be especially helpful if you've installed some piece of software that doesn't

Windows 7 Professional and Windows 7 Ultimate at $134.99 and $174.99, respectively. This is a saving of approximately 50% on each version from
the list price. OEM editions are priced lower as you typically do not get retail packaging, little official support and you're not able to
transfer the operating system license from one PC to another.

16.12.2008Windows 7 Feature Request List Leaks Out
Although the Vista transition is far from complete, that doesn't mean Microsoft isn't already hard at work on Windows 7, the next version of the
venerable operating system - and this list of user-requested features unearthed by the folks at Neowin might hold some clues as to the future.
The "wish list" was sent out by Microsoft before Windows 7 development even began, so most of these features probably aren't
even on the radar, but what's most interesting is that seemingly small fixes like "Window Update progress indicator" vastly outnumber big-ticket
items like "integrated audio / video codec manager" and "Windows 'Game' Mode."

Although Microsoft registered the Web site for its new Windows Azure more than 14 years ago, it has not trademarked the name of its new cloud-based
operating system, Windows Azure, Internet searches revealed Monday.
According to searches conducted by Computerworld, Microsoft has not
applied for a trademark for either "Windows Azure" or "Azure Services Platform" with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Microsoft used both
names to describe its software-plus-services technology.
Microsoft's own trademark list also omits Azure, though that list has not been

28.10.2008Microsoft: Pay no attention to post-Vista plans
Microsoft declined to comment
Friday on post-Vista plans by
releasing a comment -- a move
bloggers attributed to buzz
about a list of most-asked-for
features to Vista's
successor. The list was yanked
from a Microsoft forum earlier
this week.
The
company's statement,
attributed to Kevin Kutz,
director of the Windows client
team, was among the shortest
on record from the company.
"The launch of
Windows Vista was an
incredibly exciting moment for
our customers and partners
around the world, and the
company is focused on the
value Windows Vista will bring
to people today," Kutz said.
"We are not giving official
guidance to the public yet
about the next version of
Windows, other than that
we're working on it. When we
are ready, we will provide
updates." ..

14.07.2007No plans to release public Vista app-compat checklist
If you were wondering when
Microsoft plans to publish an
official list of applications
that don't work well with
Windows Vista, the answer is
never. When Microsoft released
Windows XP Service Pack 2, the
company subsequently published
a list of applications that
didn't work properly (or at
all) with the SP2 update. But
with Windows Vista, Microsoft
has decided not to issue a
public list.
Instead, the company is
advising both business and
home users with compatibility
concerns to get a copy of the
Microsoft Application
Compatibility Toolkit (ACT),
which includes technology that
will allow users to log
compatibility problems and
cross-check (privately, with
Microsoft and other customers)
compatibility results for
selected applications.
Until this month,
Microsoft officials had been
noncommittal when asked about
plans for publishing a full
Vista app-compat list, like
they did with Windows XP SP 2.
But just over a week ago, when
I asked Brad Goldberg,
Microsoft's general manager
for Windows client product
management, about Microsoft's
plans to make such a list
public, I got a more
definitive answer.

12.12.2006NetBIOS browsing across subnets may fail after upgrading to Windows Server 2008
When installing a new Windows 2008 server or upgrading an existing server to Windows 2008, the Computer Browser service is set to disabled by
default.
If you upgrade the Domain Controller that is assigned the PDC FSMO role or you move that role to a Windows 2008 DC, you
may see the domain wide NetBIOS-based network browse list get smaller and remote subnet machines will disappear from the list. Eventually you may
only see computers from the local subnet in the network browse list. If you have subnets with only one server and it is Windows 2008, then you may
also see inconsistent local subnet browse lists due to clients taking a master browser role and they may be rebooted, turned off, etc.

12.03.2009WSUS users get a surprise: Windows 7 client
Some Windows Software Update Services (WSUS) users got a surprise on their patching servers on August 20: A mention of Windows 7 Client.
The actual Windows 7 client code was not distributed via WSUS. But the appearance of Windows 7 on the list of products that will be serviced
over WSUS paves the way for Microsoft to start pushing something Windows-7-related to customers in the coming months.

a new category.” said one WSUS customer, who confirmed that he saw the “Windows 7″ box on his update check list this morning.
