Google includes controversial kill switch in Android

There was outrage last month when it was discovered Apple had included a "kill switch" into the iPhone software.

The kill switch meant that any applications Apple did not approve of or were dangerous could be disabled remotely by Apple themselves.

In the terms and conditions of the Google android fine print Google has said they "may discover a product that violates the developer distribution agreement ... in such an instance, Google retains the right to remotely remove those applications from your device at its sole discretion".

The T-Mobile G1 is the first phone to run the Android software developed by Google and goes on sale Oct. 22.

Will Google get the blogger world and mainstream press up in arms like Apple did?

Office 2007 Also Has Kill Switch

Apparently Microsoft is putting the same kind of 'kill switch' into Office 2007 that is reportedly being used by Vista. The kill switch limits the program's functionality once activation has been bypassed a certain number of times.

But now Microsoft's intentions are clear: Just as it is doing with Vista, Microsoft plans to incorporate what basically amounts to a 'kill switch' into Office 2007. Office 2007 users who can't or won't pass activation muster within a set time period will be moved into "reduced-functionality mode", according to Microsoft's Knowledge Base article.

'Kill switch' dropped from Vista

Microsoft is to withdraw an anti-piracy tool from Windows Vista, which disables the operating system when invoked, following customer complaints. The so-called "kill switch" is designed to prevent users with illegal copies of Vista from using certain features.

But the tool has suffered from glitches since it was introduced with many Windows users claiming that legal copies of Vista had been disabled. Microsoft says its efforts have seen a drop in piracy of its software. In a statement released by the company, Microsoft corporate vice president Mike Sievert, said: "Users whose systems are identified as counterfeit will be presented with clear and recurring notices about the status of their system and how to get genuine copies."

HTML 5: Could it kill Flash, JavaFX and Silverlight?

While Adobe, Microsoft, and Sun duke it out with proprietary technologies for implementing multimedia on the Web, HTML 5 has the potential to "eat these vendors' lunches," offering Web experiences based on an industry standard. In fact, one expressed goal of the new standard is to move the Web away from proprietary technologies such as Flash, Silverlight, and JavaFX. "It would be a terrible step backward if humanity's major development platform was controlled by a single vendor the way that previous platforms such as Windows have been," says HTML 5 co-editor Ian Hickson, a Google employee.

How Facebook could kill Twitter, and why it won't

Before I start rambling, I'd like to start off by saying that I never really got into the whole microblogging scene. I tried, time and time again, but it just never kept me interested for very long. Maybe that's why one day I went as far as getting down on my knees and begged God for microblogging to go away so that I wouldn't have to keep hearing about the latest Twitter outage from all my favourite news sites. As time went by though, I quickly realized that Twitter, and microblogging in general, was here to stay. That's why today you're seeing me post my first ever microblogging-related story, and as much as I find the whole ongoing development very interesting, it will probably be my last.

So why do I say that Facebook could kill off Twitter? Well, because it had microblogging before Twitter was a baby (yeah, I know, Twitter still is a damn baby). You can argue day and night that wall-to-wall posts aren't mini blog posts, but you can't deny that Status Updates are exactly what Twitter has been doing from the very start. Think about it. Status Updates = Tweets. Don't believe me? Well, there is one difference between the two, and this is really the key to microblogging's success. On Twitter, you can follow anyone you would like, without their approval. Facebook just won't let you do that.

Apple has come out swinging, or at least Brian Croll, Vice President of Apple's Mac OS X worldwide product marketing has when it comes to the new offerings from Microsoft. "As a result, I think people are looking for something different, and the Mac offers real ease of use, stability and security." In his defense, Apple did just release their quarterly earnings which do backup some of his statements.

Microsoft: Ask us and we'll kill your ActiveX control

Microsoft this week said it would lock down other vendors' software using Windows Update-delivered fixes if those companies ask Microsoft to help stymy attacks. The company explained its efforts after being asked about a security update that disabled a vulnerable ActiveX control used by Yahoo's music player program.

"If an independent software vendor discovers that they have shipped a vulnerable control, they should e-mail secure@microsoft.com to work with Microsoft to issue a kill bit, disabling that control," Tim Rains, a spokesman for the Microsoft Security Response Center (MSRC), said in an e-mail.

Microsoft to kill Hotmail via Outlook Express on September 1

If you're still using Outlook Express for checking your Windows Live Hotmail, listen up. Microsoft will be cutting off your access in three months. However the WebDAV protocol got a stay of execution after users complained that it was too soon. Microsoft's management agreed and gave users another year to make the migration.

TechCrunch: Earlier today we learned that Apple had begun to pull all Google Voice-enabled applications from the App Store, citing the fact that they "duplicate features that come with the iPhone". Apple bashes Windows 7 at WWDC

Apple is announcing new MacBooks, new iPhones and its next generation OS, Snow Leopard today but during its Keynote at WWDC they dug hard at Microsoft. Bertrand Serlet, Senior Vice President of Software Engineering at Apple, took the stage and began digging at Vista saying "what a big hole Microsoft has dug," and adding that "they're trying to get out of it with Windows 7." He carried on following up with an attack of Windows 7 saying it has "even more complexity" than Vista because it's just based on the "same old tech as Vista." Apple is notorious for attacking Windows based PCs in its Get A Mac adverts. Thanks to Engadget for the following picture:

Joost To Kill Desktop Client

Om Malik: In what is likely to be a major shift in the company’s strategy, peer-to-peer startup Joost is going to stop making its desktop client. The decision to suspend the client is likely to be announced soon, I am told. The company is going to a browser-only strategy, in which much of its content is going to be available through a browser-based player. Joost, I am told, will release a small plugin that would embed itself in the browser and allow you to grab files using the P2P technologies. The web client is likely to have better quality than average video sites.
