Microsoft Deployment New Feature: Windows Update

One of the new tasks and scripts in the Microsoft Deployment Lite Touch Task sequence is called Windows Update. This task is disabled in the default task sequence for the Client Template. The task runs a script called ztiwindowsupdate.wsf. One item to note is that the current version of this script requires client access to the Internet and also does not support proxy authentication. However if you meet those requirements, there are some really nice advantages of using this action. Here is a brief description of what actions this script performs.

This script will install and download updates from Windows Update and Microsoft Update over the Internet using the Windows Update Agent API. By default this feature is disabled in each Task Sequence, it must be manually enabled to run, and each computer must have a connection via proxy to the Internet. This script was designed to run on Windows XP, 2003, Vista, and should be compatible with Windows Server 2008 when released.

The Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool checks Windows XP, Windows 2000, and Windows Server 2003 computers for and helps remove infections by specific, prevalent malicious software-including Blaster, Sasser, and Mydoom. When the detection and removal process is complete, the tool displays a report describing the outcome, including which, if any, malicious software was detected and removed. The tool creates a log file named mrt.log in the %WINDIR%debug folder.

This tool is not a replacement for an anti-virus product. To help protect your computer, you should use an anti-virus product.

Microsoft will release an updated version of this tool on the second Tuesday of each month. New versions will be made available through this web page, Windows Update, and the Malicious Software Removal Tool Web site on Microsoft.com.

To have the newest versions automatically delivered and installed as soon as they are released, set the Automatic Updates feature to Automatic. The version of this tool delivered by Windows Update runs on your computer once a month, in the background. If an infection is found, the tool will display a status report the next time you start your computer. If you would like to run this tool more than once a month, run the version that is available from this Web page or use the version on the Malicious Software Removal Tool Web site.

Update Vista and Office offline

For the first time, version 4.0 of the heise Security Offline
Update
script archive supports updates for Windows
Vista and Office. Offline Update provides a simple mechanism for users to install security updates from a CD, DVD or USB stick.

Once the generator script is launched, all the user needs to do is
select the Microsoft product and the language version of the Microsoft
script they would like to download. As soon as all the patches are
downloaded onto the disk, the script packs them into burn-ready ISO
images for CDs or DVDs. The user can then launch an installation script
from the media that quickly installs the updates on the target PC.

Offline Update is supported by a lively discussion forum. It is currently the only solution available that provides owners of Windows PCs on a slow internet connection with the latest updates. Until recently, many users were able to download "update packs" that bundled the Microsoft updates in installation packets from a website operating under the name of Autopatcher, but the download site was taken down after Microsoft issued a warning to the project developers. The zip archive provided by Offline Update, however, does not contain any Microsoft code.

Microsoft Extends Deadline for Outlook Link to Hotmail

Microsoft has extended the deadline for being able to download Hotmail email through Outlook Express using the DAV protocol, previously it said that this wouldn't be possible after June 30th, when it planned to remove the link altogether.

The following notice was added to the Windows Live Hotmail Teams Blog on the 5th of May: "Recently, many customers received notification regarding Microsoft’s plan to disable the DAV protocol, which allows you to access your Windows Live Hotmail inbox from Outlook Express. From the feedback we received, it became clear that you needed additional time to evaluate alternative solutions and with this in mind, we are postponing the transition deadline previously announced. This means that you will continue to be able to access your Windows Live Hotmail accounts from Outlook Express beyond the June 30 transition deadline.

As Microsoft continues to evolve its products to meet your needs, we appreciate your feedback. This change to Outlook Express protocol is one such evolution and will allow for managing of multiple accounts and today’s large inboxes. We will update you on expected future changes and alternatives with enough advance notice to ensure a smooth transition."

They have yet to announce a new date when the DAV protocol will eventually be phased out.

New AJAX Scripting tool: Script#

Microsoft announced, continuing its tradition of beginning to work on products right after Google announced a similar one, its new AJAX scripting language, Script#, in an attempt to counter Google's alternative, the GWT toolkit.

Nikhil Kothari, a Microsoft software architect, put up a prototype of it for developers to see the product in its current state. Microsoft did not and will not answer to any feature request for the time being, until the product is out of its prototype state.

Nothing is known about the platform yet, though many users asked interesting questions about it, such as whether it will be supported by CodePlex, Microsoft's new developers community.

Dion Almaer, an AJAX co-founder and expert, said the marketshare should be roughly the same between the two competing platforms: I think that Script# is combating the same need: Developers on platform X want to stay using the language/tools that they like," Almaer said. "If X equals Java they will use GWT; if X equals C# they will use Script#

Microsoft insists UAC vulnerability is not a flaw

Yesterday we reported on a major UAC security flaw where malicious hackers could potentially execute a script on a users machine by tricking into them into opening a disguised exe. This script would disable UAC without user interaction and without the users knowledge. A Microsoft spokesperson has provided Neowin with a response to the issue:This is not a vulnerability. The intent of the default configuration of UAC is that users don't get prompted when making changes to Windows settings. This includes changing the UAC prompting level.

Windows XP SP3 Release Candidate 2 via Windows Update

Microsoft yesterday made Service Pack 3 RC2 available to both testers and the general public. They have provided a small script to run on your XP SP2 machine that will allow for SP3 to be available through Windows Update.

The build, now at v3311, cannot be installed over previous SP3 betas. Versions of Windows XP Service Pack 3 prior to Release Candidate 2 should be removed before attempting to use the registry key. Windows Update will not offer Release Candidate 2 to machines with previous versions of the Windows XP Service Pack 3 beta.

Windows XP Service Pack 3 RC2 via Windows Update (Public Availability Program)

Windows XP Service Pack 3 Release Candidate 2 is available to the public. Specific registry settings will allow you to be offered SP3 via Windows Update.

Download the script and run it on a machine currently running Windows XP Service Pack 2. The script sets a registry key on your system. The registry key is required for Windows Update to recognize your machine as a valid target for Windows XP Service Pack 3 RC2.

Versions of Windows XP Service Pack 3 prior to Release Candidate 2 should be removed before attempting to use the registry key. Windows Update will not offer Release Candidate 2 to machines with previous versions of the Windows XP Service Pack 3 beta.

It is recommended that you apply the resulting update package to an activated, genuine copy of Windows XP, in a test environment. As with any pre-release software, it is also recommended that you back up files and settings on your machine before applying this update package.

Microsoft Silverlight to back Ruby, Python in browser

Microsoft plans to enable the Python and Ruby languages to be used for client-side development of rich Internet applications that leverage the company's Silverlight browser plug-in technology. The intent is to let developers continue using these languages on the client side without having to also incorporate javascript. While use of javascript for Web development has been called AJAX (Asynchronous javascript and XML), Microsoft is referring to its planned capabilities as APAX and ARAX, with Python and Ruby replacing javascript in these new acronyms.

"The difference between AJAX, ARAX, and APAX is the language, if you will," said Brian Goldfarb, group manager for Microsoft's developer division, in an interview on Friday afternoon. Today, it is common for developers to use javascript in the browser. But with Microsoft's planned release of Silverlight 2 later this year, developers could begin using Python and Ruby on the client as well. Ruby and Python already are being used for server-side development.
